Antenatal corticosteroid therapy (ACT) and size at birth: A population-based analysis using the Finnish Medical Birth Register.

Antenatal corticosteroid therapy (ACT) is used clinically to prepare the fetal lung for impending preterm birth, but animal and human studies link corticosteroids to smaller birth size. Whether ACT is...

Exposure to Antenatal Corticosteroids and Reduced Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia in Adult Survivors of Extremely Low Birth Weight.

Purpose/Aim: Antenatal corticosteroid therapy (ACS) has dramatically increased survival rates among extremely low birthweight (ELBW) infants. However, the long term effects of ACS on autonomic nervous...

A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Trial Assessing the Oral Administration of a Heat-Treated Lactobacillus paracasei  Supplement in Infants with Atopic Dermatitis Receiving Topical Corticosteroid Therapy.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common disease in infancy, for which topical steroids are the first-line therapy but have side effects. Innovative approaches are needed to reduce the burden of AD and cort...

Prolonged duration of early antibiotic therapy in extremely premature infants.

Prolonged early antibiotics in extremely premature infants may have negative effects. We aimed to assess prevalence and outcomes of provision of prolonged early antibiotics to extremely premature infa...

Temporal Trends and Center Variation in Early Antibiotic Use Among Premature Infants.

Premature infants are frequently administered empirical antibiotic therapy at birth. Early and prolonged antibiotic exposures among infants without culture-confirmed infection have been associated wit...

Study of Antenatal Thyrotropin-Releasing Hormone in Women in Premature Labor to Prevent Lung Disease in Preterm Infants

OBJECTIVES: I. Assess the efficacy and safety of antenatal administration of thyrotropin-releasing hormone to women in premature labor to improve pulmonary outcomes in preterm infants.

Supporting All Families of Premature Infants at Prentice Women's Hospital From Admission Through Discharge

The objective of this study is to determine the extent to which the SMART NICU2HOMEapp, a mobile application designed for parents of premature infants to receive daily, real-time informati...

The Effect of Feeding Length on the Oxygenation Instability Among Premature Infants

SpO2 instability is in the nature of premature infants. Hypoxic episodes occur spontaneously in many of these infants, especially after the first week of life. Different interventions have...

Impact of a Booster Course of Antenatal Steroids on Neonatal Outcome in Patients With Premature Rupture of the Membranes

This trial hopes to prospectively evaluate the impact of one versus two courses of antenatal steroids on the incidence of major neonatal morbidity in pregnant women with pre-labor prematur...

Repeat Antenatal Steroids Trial

A course of steroids given to a mother who is in labor with a premature fetus will reduce the risk of the premature infant dying or having serious complications. This trial will test wheth...

Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions

A chronic lung disease developed after OXYGEN INHALATION THERAPY or mechanical ventilation (VENTILATION, MECHANICAL) usually occurring in certain premature infants (INFANT, PREMATURE) or newborn infants with respiratory distress syndrome (RESPIRATORY DISTRESS SYNDROME, NEWBORN). Histologically, it is characterized by the unusual abnormalities of the bronchioles, such as METAPLASIA, decrease in alveolar number, and formation of CYSTS.

Onset of OBSTETRIC LABOR before term (TERM BIRTH) but usually after the FETUS has become viable. In humans, it occurs sometime during the 29th through 38th week of PREGNANCY. TOCOLYSIS inhibits premature labor and can prevent the BIRTH of premature infants (INFANT, PREMATURE).

Diseases that occur in PREMATURE INFANTS.

A glucocorticoid with the general properties of the corticosteroids. It is the drug of choice for all conditions in which routine systemic corticosteroid therapy is indicated, except adrenal deficiency states.

A condition of the newborn marked by DYSPNEA with CYANOSIS, heralded by such prodromal signs as dilatation of the alae nasi, expiratory grunt, and retraction of the suprasternal notch or costal margins, mostly frequently occurring in premature infants, children of diabetic mothers, and infants delivered by cesarean section, and sometimes with no apparent predisposing cause.
