Summary of "A Legacy Revisited: Needle Holders."

A needle holder is one of the crucial surgical instruments for surgeons. Its prime function is to steadily hold the needle while applying sutures, thus avoiding injury to the surrounding tissues and to the surgeon's hand. Wide varieties of needle holders are available for use in orthopaedic practice. This review article briefly describes the biomechanics and other characteristics of some of the commonly used needle holders. The care aspects and wear features of needle holders are also discussed. A surgeon should be aware of the different types of needle holders, their special features, biomechanical properties, and specific uses as they are an important tool in the surgeon's armamentarium. Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions

Usage of a single needle among two or more people for injecting drugs. Needle sharing is a high-risk behavior for contracting infectious disease.

Removal and examination of tissue obtained through a transdermal needle inserted into the specific region, organ, or tissue being analyzed.

Conducting a fine needle biopsy with the aid of ENDOSCOPIC ULTRASONOGRAPHY.

A type of scanning probe microscopy in which a very sharp conducting needle is swept just a few angstroms above the surface of a sample. The tiny tunneling current that flows between the sample and the needle tip is measured, and from this are produced three-dimensional topographs. Due to the poor electron conductivity of most biological samples, thin metal coatings are deposited on the sample.
