Assessing the Impact of Procedure-Specific Opioid Prescribing Recommendations on Opioid Stewardship Following Pelvic Organ Prolapse Surgery.

Nationally, there is increasing concern regarding the volume of opioid medications prescribed postoperatively and the rate of prescription opioid related adverse-events. In evaluation of this, several...

Standardized, Patient-specific, Postoperative Opioid Prescribing After Inpatient Orthopaedic Surgery.

Opioid-related mortality has increased over the past 2 decades, leading to the recognition of a nationwide opioid epidemic and prompting physicians to reexamine their opioid prescribing practices. At ...

Opioid Prescribing and Consumption Patterns following Outpatient Plastic Surgery Procedures.

Opioid overprescribing is a nationwide problem contributing to the current epidemic. This study evaluated opioid consumption, physician prescribing, and patient satisfaction with pain control followin...

Identifying opioid prescribing patterns for high-volume prescribers via cluster analysis.

Despite recent decreases in opioid prescribing rates, evidence suggests there is substantial variation in the way opioids are prescribed by providers. This study aims to identify patterns in high-volu...

Opioid Prescribing Patterns of Orthopedic Surgery Residents After Open Reduction Internal Fixation of Distal Radius Fractures.

In many academic medical centers, resident physicians typically write initial opioid prescriptions, but little is known about their prescribing practices. We hypothesized that lower resident postgradu...

A Quality Improvement Project to Investigate Individual Provider Variation in Opioid Prescribing From the Emergency Department

This is a study of emergency physicians' prescribing patterns related to opioid (narcotic) medications. We are trying to determine whether giving providers access to their own prescribing ...

Monitoring Patterns of Prescribing to Identify Changes in Access to ER/LA Opioid Analgesics

Changes in prescribing will be compared in prescribers from specialties whose prescribing is hypothesized to be relatively unaffected by the REMS (such as oncologists and hospice providers...

There was a study titled "A prospective evaluation of opioid utilization after upper extremity surgical procedures: Identifying consumption patterns and determining prescribing guidelines"...

Patient-Directed Postoperative Opioid Prescribing for Gynecologic Surgery

We would like to evaluate and optimize opioid prescribing after minimally invasive hysterectomy. Currently, our standard prescribing is 150 oral morphine equivalents. However, recent studi...

Ambulatory Gynecologic Surgery: Finding the Optimal Opioid Prescription

Currently there is a nationwide epidemic in opioid abuse and overdose deaths. While the opioid epidemic is multi-factorial one major source of excess opioids may be over-prescribing in the...

Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions

Surgery performed on any endocrine gland.

The practice of prescribing medications in a manner that poses more risk than benefit, particularly where safer alternatives exist.

A synthetic opioid that is used as the hydrochloride. It is an opioid analgesic that is primarily a mu-opioid agonist. It has actions and uses similar to those of MORPHINE. It also has a depressant action on the cough center and may be given to control intractable cough associated with terminal lung cancer. Methadone is also used as part of the treatment of dependence on opioid drugs, although prolonged use of methadone itself may result in dependence. (From Martindale, The Extra Pharmacopoeia, 30th ed, p1082-3)

A class of opioid receptors recognized by its pharmacological profile. Kappa opioid receptors bind dynorphins with a higher affinity than endorphins which are themselves preferred to enkephalins.

Exogenous agents, synthetic and naturally occurring, which are capable of disrupting the functions of the ENDOCRINE SYSTEM including the maintenance of HOMEOSTASIS and the regulation of developmental processes. Endocrine disruptors are compounds that can mimic HORMONES, or enhance or block the binding of hormones to their receptors, or otherwise lead to activating or inhibiting the endocrine signaling pathways and hormone metabolism.
