Helicopter air ambulance services (HAA) increasingly operate during darkness, and the cockpit crew prefers a dimmed light to be used in the cabin. Our HAA team is currently researching the use of dimm...
Low photocatalytic efficiency of visible light and fast recombination of photo-generated carriers are two challenges facing the applications of photocatalyst sterilant zinc oxide (ZnO). Meanwhile, bot...
Light underneath Antarctic sea-ice is below detectable limits for up to four months of the year. The ability of Antarctic sea-ice diatoms to survive this prolonged darkness relies on their metabolic c...
Daily light and darkness onset and circadian rhythms metabolically synchronize hematopoietic stem cell differentiation and maintenance: The role of bone marrow norepinephrine, TNF and melatonin cycles.
Hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPC) are essential for daily mature blood cell production, host immunity and osteoclast mediated bone turnover. The timing at which stem cells give rise to ma...
A 58-day cultivation experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of photoperiods on growth, lipid metabolism and oxidative stress of juvenile gibel carp. Juveniles (5.41 ± 0.01 g) wer...
To generate pilot data to investigate the potential to use in vivo iron- and neuromelanin-quantification as imaging tools for the diagnostic evaluation of movement disorders with predomina...
Under entrained conditions, humans maintain a consolidated nocturnal sleep episode that coincides with environmental darkness and endogenous melatonin secretion. Various factors, such as a...
There is evidence from a variety of animal studies that choroidal blood flow is under neural control. By contrast, only little information is available from human studies. Recent results i...
The purpose of this study is to determine whether red light therapy using LED 650nm red light for body contouring of the waist, hips and thighs is as effective as red light therapy using L...
Amblyopia is an impairment in spatial vision caused by asymmetry in the quality of visual input across the two eyes during childhood. It is difficult to treat in adulthood because the visu...
The absence of light.
A biogenic amine that is found in animals and plants. In mammals, melatonin is produced by the PINEAL GLAND. Its secretion increases in darkness and decreases during exposure to light. Melatonin is implicated in the regulation of SLEEP, mood, and REPRODUCTION. Melatonin is also an effective antioxidant.
Study subjects in COHORT STUDIES whose outcomes are unknown e.g., because they could not or did not wish to attend follow-up visits.(from Dictionary of Epidemiology, 5th ed.)
Treatment using irradiation with light of low power intensity so that the effects are a response to the light and not due to heat. A variety of light sources, especially low-power lasers are used.
The adjustment of the eye to variations in the intensity of light. Light adaptation is the adjustment of the eye when the light threshold is increased; DARK ADAPTATION when the light is greatly reduced. (From Cline et al., Dictionary of Visual Science, 4th ed)
