Summary of "Preparation and characterization of core-shell type Ag@SiO2 nanoparticles for photodynamic cancer therapy."

With several recent scientific developments, Photodynamic therapy (PDT) offers the promising to become incorporated into the mainstream of cancer therapy. Now a days noble metal based nano-PDT is increasing due to its advantages in the field of biomedicine. In this study, noble metal based Ag@SiO core-shell nanoparticles were synthesized and to confirm the core-shell structure they were characterized by UV-visible, XRD, FTIR, TEM, and EDX. Our data confirm that core-shell type Ag@SiO nanoparticles maintain its ability to kill cancer cells upon light irradiation. This shows that SiO shell not only prevents the aggregation and it also enhances the photodynamic activity of Ag nanoparticles.

Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions

Nanometer-sized particles that are nanoscale in three dimensions. They include nanocrystaline materials; NANOCAPSULES; METAL NANOPARTICLES; DENDRIMERS, and QUANTUM DOTS. The uses of nanoparticles include DRUG DELIVERY SYSTEMS and cancer targeting and imaging.

The purified component of HEMATOPORPHYRIN DERIVATIVE, it consists of a mixture of oligomeric porphyrins. It is used in photodynamic therapy (HEMATOPORPHYRIN PHOTORADIATION); to treat malignant lesions with visible light and experimentally as an antiviral agent. It is the first drug to be approved in the use of PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY in the United States.

Nanoparticles produced from metals whose uses include biosensors, optics, and catalysts. In biomedical applications the particles frequently involve the noble metals, especially gold and silver.

A layer of protein coating adsorbed by NANOPARTICLES upon entry into PLASMA or other protein-containing biological fluids, which affects how nanoparticles are internalized by cells and cleared from the body.

Botanically, a type of single-seeded fruit in which the pericarp enclosing the seed is a hard woody shell. In common usage the term is used loosely for any hard, oil-rich kernel. Of those commonly eaten, only hazel, filbert, and chestnut are strictly nuts. Walnuts, pecans, almonds, and coconuts are really drupes. Brazil nuts, pistachios, macadamias, and cashews are really seeds with a hard shell derived from the testa rather than the pericarp.
