Summary of "Repeat surgery after decompressive craniectomy for traumatic intracranial hemorrhage: outcomes and predictors."

Repeat surgery (RS) after decompressive craniectomy/craniotomy (DC) for traumatic intracranial hemorrhage (TICH) is a devastating complication. In patients undergoing DC for TICH, we sought to: a) describe the population requiring RS, b) compare outcomes of those requiring RS to those who did not, and c) discern RS predictors.

Clinical features include HEADACHE; NAUSEA; VOMITING, nuchal rigidity, variable neurological deficits and reduced mental status.

Bleeding within the SKULL induced by penetrating and nonpenetrating traumatic injuries, including hemorrhages into the tissues of CEREBRUM; BRAIN STEM; and CEREBELLUM; as well as into the epidural, subdural and subarachnoid spaces of the MENINGES.

Bleeding into the SUBARACHNOID SPACE due to CRANIOCEREBRAL TRAUMA. Minor hemorrhages may be asymptomatic; moderate to severe hemorrhages may be associated with INTRACRANIAL HYPERTENSION and VASOSPASM, INTRACRANIAL.

Traumatic injuries to the cranium where the integrity of the skull is not compromised and no bone fragments or other objects penetrate the skull and dura mater. This frequently results in mechanical injury being transmitted to intracranial structures which may produce traumatic brain injuries, hemorrhage, or cranial nerve injury.
