Summary of "On the Transition from Gas-like to Liquid-like Behaviour in Supercritical N."

We have studied in detail the transition from gas-like to rigid liquid-like behaviour in supercritical N2 at 300 K (2.4 TC). Our study combines neutron diffraction and Raman spectroscopy with ab-initio molecular dynamics simulations. We observe a narrow transition from gas-like to rigid liquid-like behaviour at ca. 150 MPa, which we associate with the Frenkel line. Our findings allow us to reliably characterize the Frenkel line using both diffraction and spectroscopy methods, backed up by simulation, for the same substance. We clearly lay out what parameters change, and what parameters do not change, when the Frenkel line is crossed.

Gas or Liquid? The Supercritical Behavior of Pure Fluids.

By definition, the distinction between a gas and a liquid ceases to exist beyond the critical point for pure fluids. Nevertheless, there remains a strong desire to attribute gas-like or liquid-like be...

First-Order Liquid-Liquid Transition without Density Discontinuity in Molten Sodium Acetate Trihydrate and Its Influence on Crystallization.

Liquid-liquid transition (LLT) refers to the phase transition among thermodynamically distinct liquid states with identical composition in analogy to the polymorphic transition in solid. The growing ...

Liquid-liquid criticality in the dielectric constant and refractive index: A perspective.

The critical region in the phase diagram of condensed matter systems such as fluids or fluid mixtures is characterized by the anomalous behaviour of specific thermodynamic properties. Here, we discuss...

From a Liquid to a Crystal without Going through a First Order Phase Transition: Determining the Free Energy of Melting with Glassy Intermediates.

The excess free energy of a liquid relative to an Einstein crystal reference state is calculated without going through a first-order phase transition. This is accomplished by going through an arrested...

Phase transition and release kinetics of polyphenols encapsulated lyotropic liquid crystals.

In this paper, the lyotropic liquid crystals formed in SL/IP/HO system were prepared as a drug carrier system to encapsulate polyphenols. The components and introduction of drug had influences in the ...

Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions

A CHROMATOGRAPHY method using supercritical fluid, usually carbon dioxide under very high pressure (around 73 atmospheres or 1070 psi at room temperature) as the mobile phase. Other solvents are sometimes added as modifiers. This is used both for analytical (SFC) and extraction (SFE) purposes.

A phase transition from liquid state to gas state, which is affected by Raoult's law. It can be accomplished by fractional distillation.

The removal of a soluble component from a liquid mixture by contact with a second liquid, immiscible with the carrier liquid, in which the component is preferentially soluble. (McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Scientific and Technical Terms, 6th ed)

Miniaturized methods of liquid-liquid extraction.

Phenotypic changes of EPITHELIAL CELLS to MESENCHYME type, which increase cell mobility critical in many developmental processes such as NEURAL TUBE development. NEOPLASM METASTASIS and DISEASE PROGRESSION may also induce this transition.
