This work describes our efforts to obtain nerve conduction studies normal values in a pediatric cohort between birth and 3 years of age using the extrapolated norms or e-norms method. Interpretation of these studies poses major challenges when no reliable normal values can be found in the literature.

Some patients present with typical clinical features of carpal tunnel syndrome despite normal nerve conduction studies. This study compared the preoperative and 1-year postoperative QuickDASH scores i...
The objective of the study was to determine the reference values for cross-sectional area (CSA) of the nerves in healthy subjects between the age of 2 and 30 years.
The normal values of optic nerve diameter and optic nerve sheath diameter might be beneficial in defining an abnormality such as optic nerve hypoplasia, or enlarged subarachnoid space, reflecting the ...
Nerve conduction studies (NCS) are useful tools for diagnosing carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Establishing the normal values is the first step required for utilizing NCS for diagnosis. Previous epidemi...
Nerve conduction studies are used to aid in the diagnosis of distal symmetric polyneuropathy (DSP). Whether bilateral lower extremity nerve conduction studies (NCS) are needed when evaluating for susp...
We intend to study children and adolescents from 8 to 18 years suffering from diabetes mellitus type 1 for more than one year. The patients will undergo a detailed clinical examination for...
The study aims as the principal objective to compare two approaches to diagnosis unilateral diaphragmatic paralysis: transdiaphragmatic pressure (Pdi) measurement versus phrenic nerve cond...
Peripheral nerve diseases can separately affect different kind of nerve fibres. Globally two kinds of fibres can be distinguished: large size and small size. The usual electromyogram only ...
Different neurological damage may alter the pain conduction systems centrally (spinothalamic pathway) or peripherally (small caliber sensory fibers A delta and C). The laser thermal stimul...
The purpose of this study is to determine if temporary weakness of a small foot muscle caused by local injection of botulinum toxin into that muscle can be measured with a strain gauge in ...
Transmission of sound waves through vibration of bones in the SKULL to the inner ear (COCHLEA). By using bone conduction stimulation and by bypassing any OUTER EAR or MIDDLE EAR abnormalities, hearing thresholds of the cochlea can be determined. Bone conduction hearing differs from normal hearing which is based on air conduction stimulation via the EAR CANAL and the TYMPANIC MEMBRANE.
Mechanical compression of nerves or nerve roots from internal or external causes. These may result in a conduction block to nerve impulses (due to MYELIN SHEATH dysfunction) or axonal loss. The nerve and nerve sheath injuries may be caused by ISCHEMIA; INFLAMMATION; or a direct mechanical effect.
A class of nerve fibers as defined by their structure, specifically the nerve sheath arrangement. The AXONS of the myelinated nerve fibers are completely encased in a MYELIN SHEATH. They are fibers of relatively large and varied diameters. Their NEURAL CONDUCTION rates are faster than those of the unmyelinated nerve fibers (NERVE FIBERS, UNMYELINATED). Myelinated nerve fibers are present in somatic and autonomic nerves.
The propagation of the NERVE IMPULSE along the nerve away from the site of an excitation stimulus.
Test results which deviate substantially from normal ranges of REFERENCE VALUES or other qualitative results. They trigger CLINICAL LABORATORY SERVICES to place a special alert to ensure PATIENT SAFETY.
Pediatrics is the general medicine of childhood. Because of the developmental processes (psychological and physical) of childhood, the involvement of parents, and the social management of conditions at home and at school, pediatrics is a specialty. With ...
