Potential Unintended Consequences Of Recent Shared Decision Making Policy Initiatives.
Shared decision making (SDM)-when clinicians and patients make medical decisions together-is moving swiftly from an ethical ideal toward widespread clinical implementation affecting millions of patien...
Response to diagnosis of pre-diabetes in socioeconomically deprived areas: a qualitative study.
Diabetes prevention is a key priority for the NHS, with a particular focus on populations at highest risk. The NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme (NHS DPP) has been introduced, offering a course of die...
Narratives of people who inject drugs on factors contributing to opioid overdose.
In recent years, there has been increasing national and global attention to opioid overdoses. In San Francisco, it is estimated that the population of people who inject drugs (PWID) has more than doub...
Syringe Services Programs (SSPs) have been proposed as a key intervention to address increasing rates of opioid injection, overdose, and infectious disease transmission in the U.S. In recent years, mu...
Unintended pregnancy in adolescence and early adulthood is stigmatized in the United States because it deviates from social norms that consider young people's sexuality as a social problem. While limi...
Default Dosing Settings for Opioid Prescriptions to Adolescents and Young Adults After Tonsillectomy
This study will evaluate whether lowering the default number of doses for opioid prescriptions written in an electronic health record system can decrease opioid prescribing without causing...
Clinical Determinants of Unintended Prolonged Opioid Use
Researchers are trying to better understand how people who are prescribed opioids for short-term use, go on to receive this type of medication on a longer-term basis.
Despite research demonstrating the efficacy of buprenorphine (BPN), effectiveness in real-world settings has been limited by shorter retention than for methadone, and the need for daily or...
Reducing the Abuse of Opioids in Drug Users
The consequences of prescription opioid abuse are serious and the number of deaths from unintended overdose have quadrupled over the last 15+ years. Opioid analgesics remain among the most...
Improving Reproductive Health for Women in Opioid Medication-Assisted Treatment (OMAT)
Recent research suggests that women with substance use disorders may be at a higher risk of unintended pregnancy. There is a paucity of interventions specifically focused on this populatio...
Methadone
A synthetic opioid that is used as the hydrochloride. It is an opioid analgesic that is primarily a mu-opioid agonist. It has actions and uses similar to those of MORPHINE. It also has a depressant action on the cough center and may be given to control intractable cough associated with terminal lung cancer. Methadone is also used as part of the treatment of dependence on opioid drugs, although prolonged use of methadone itself may result in dependence. Receptors, Opioid, Kappa
A class of opioid receptors recognized by its pharmacological profile. Kappa opioid receptors bind dynorphins with a higher affinity than endorphins which are themselves preferred to enkephalins.
Receptors, Opioid, Mu
A class of opioid receptors recognized by its pharmacological profile. Mu opioid receptors bind, in decreasing order of affinity, endorphins, dynorphins, met-enkephalin, and leu-enkephalin. They have also been shown to be molecular receptors for morphine.
Drug Users
People who take drugs for a non-therapeutic or non-medical effect. The drugs may be legal or illegal, but their use often results in adverse medical, legal, or social consequences for the users.
Receptors, Opioid, Delta
A class of opioid receptors recognized by its pharmacological profile. Delta opioid receptors bind endorphins and enkephalins with approximately equal affinity and have less affinity for dynorphins.
