Summary of "A simple technique for placement of Seprafilm® - a sodium hyaluronate/carboxymethylcellulose absorbable barrier - during laparoscopic myomectomy."

This reports describes a simple technique, using conventional instrumentation, for placement of Seprafilm® - a sodium hyaluronate/carboxymethylcellulose absorbable barrier in adhesion prevention. Three hundred seventy-eight women with uterine fibroids undergoing laparoscopic myomectomy (LM) had 737 Seprafilm® pieces placed. The Seprafilm® sheet was softened through exposure to room air for 5 min, cut into four pieces (length: 5-10 mm), rolled-up alongside a plastic sheet cut from a camera drape cover, and gently placed at the right paracolic gutter. The Seprafilm® pieces unfolded semi-automatically upon their release and were then placed on the uterus. The median time per piece to apply Seprafilm® was 1 minute [range: 0.8-3.5 minute]. We failed to place 16 pieces (16/737, 2.2%) in eleven patients. Virginal status, fibroid weight, and the number of removed fibroids were risk factors for failed placement. Our technique for Seprafilm® placement during LM is simple and safe.
