Summary of "The Lived Experience of Persons With Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma in the United States."

Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is a rare but deadly cancer. Although there is an emerging picture of the individual MPM experience, the United States is underrepresented in this literature. With the United States contributing more deaths from MPM than any other country, findings from this study will enhance a global body of literature on the lived experience of this devastating cancer.

Clinical outcomes with recurrence after pleurectomy/decortication for malignant pleural mesothelioma.

Most patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma experience recurrence following treatment. However, no clinical studies have evaluated post-recurrence survival after pleurectomy/decortication for ma...

Diffuse epithelioid malignant mesothelioma of the pleura presenting as a hydropneumothorax and vertebral body invasion.

Malignant mesothelioma is an uncommon form of neoplastic transformation of the mesothelial cells that line the serosal surfaces of the body. It most commonly affects the pleura and is often associated...

Clinical feature of diagnostic challenging cases for pleural biopsy in patient with malignant pleural mesothelioma.

Pleural biopsy through video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS pleural biopsy) is the most reliable diagnostic procedure for malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM). However, definitive diagnosis of MPM is...

Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy After Lung Sparing Surgery for Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma: A Single Institution Experience.

We investigated the possible role of volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) in the setting of adjuvant treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) after lung-sparing surgery with pleurectomy an...

Detection of TGF-β in pleural effusions for diagnosis and prognostic stratification of malignant pleural mesothelioma.

Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is an aggressive malignancy with dismal prognosis but variable course of disease. To support diagnosis and to risk stratify patients, more reliable biomarkers are ...

Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions

Presence of fluid in the PLEURAL CAVITY as a complication of malignant disease. Malignant pleural effusions often contain actual malignant cells.

A rare neoplasm, usually benign, derived from mesenchymal fibroblasts located in the submesothelial lining of the PLEURA. It spite of its various synonyms, it has no features of mesothelial cells and is not related to malignant MESOTHELIOMA or asbestos exposure.

A peritoneal mesothelioma affecting mainly young females and producing cysts of variable size and number lined by a single layer of benign mesothelial cells. The disease follows a benign course and is compatible with a normal life expectancy, requiring occasionally partial excision or decompression for relief of pain or other symptoms. Malignant potential is exceptional. (From Holland et al., Cancer Medicine, 3d ed, p1345)

The production of adhesions between the parietal and visceral pleura. The procedure is used in the treatment of bronchopleural fistulas, malignant pleural effusions, and pneumothorax and often involves instillation of chemicals or other agents into the pleural space causing, in effect, a pleuritis that seals the air leak. (From Fishman, Pulmonary Diseases, 2d ed, p2233 & Dorland, 27th ed)

Presence of fluid in the pleural cavity resulting from excessive transudation or exudation from the pleural surfaces. It is a sign of disease and not a diagnosis in itself.
