Summary of "Rapid and transient enhancement of thalamic information transmission induced by vagus nerve stimulation."

Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) has been FDA-approved as a long-term, therapeutic treatment for multiple disorders, including pharmacoresistant epilepsy and depression. Here we elucidate the short-term effects of VNS on sensory processing.

Hypercapnia attenuates ventilator-induced lung injury through vagus nerve activation.

To investigate the role of vagus nerve activation in the protective effects of hypercapnia in ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI) rats.

Safety and Feasibility of a Rapid Outpatient Management Strategy for Transient Ischemic Attack and Minor Stroke: The Rapid Access Vascular Evaluation-Neurology (RAVEN) Approach.

Although most transient ischemic attack and minor stroke patients in US emergency departments (EDs) are admitted, experience in other countries suggests that timely outpatient evaluation of transient ...

Intraoperative monitoring for vagus nerve stimulation.

Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is a palliative treatment for patients with refractory epilepsy; however, the misplacement of electrodes may cause complications and, thus, needs to be avoided. We herein...

Distribution of midbrain cholinergic axons in the thalamus.

Cholinergic transmission is essential for adaptive behavior and has been suggested to play a central role in the modulation of brain states by means of the modulation of thalamic neurons. Midbrain cho...

Age-dependent impairment of metabotropic glutamate receptor 2-dependent long-term depression in the mouse striatum by chronic ethanol exposure.

Chronic alcohol exposure is associated with increased reliance on behavioral strategies involving the dorsolateral striatum (DLS), including habitual or stimulus-response behaviors. Presynaptic G prot...

The term exercise-induced bronchospasm (EIB) describes acute, transient airway narrowing that occurs during, and most often after, exercise. Manifestations of EIB can range from mild impai...

Validity and Inter-rater Reliability fo the Vagus Nerve Neurodynamic Test Among Healthy Subjects

Vagus nerve neurodynamic test (VN-NDT) will be validated detecting the changes in vagus nerve anatomical position due to the combination of movements of the test. Healthy subjects will be ...

Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions

Traumatic injuries to the VAGUS NERVE. Because the vagus nerve innervates multiple organs, injuries in the nerve fibers may result in any gastrointestinal organ dysfunction downstream of the injury site.

Research into the cause, transmission, amelioration, elimination, or enhancement of inherited disorders and traits.

The largest of the medial nuclei of the thalamus. It makes extensive connections with most of the other thalamic nuclei.

An interdisciplinary study dealing with the transmission of messages or signals, or the communication of information. Information theory does not directly deal with meaning or content, but with physical representations that have meaning or content. It overlaps considerably with communication theory and CYBERNETICS.

An adjunctive treatment for PARTIAL EPILEPSY and refractory DEPRESSION that delivers electrical impulses to the brain via the VAGUS NERVE. A battery implanted under the skin supplies the energy.
