Summary of "Reduced bone mineral density among HIV infected patients on anti-retroviral therapy in Blantyre, Malawi: Prevalence and associated factors."

Use of tenofovir based anti-retroviral therapy (ART) in HIV patients is associated with low bone mineral density (BMD). Low BMD predisposes people living with HIV (PLWHIV) to fractures thereby increasing morbidity and mortality. Since the introduction of tenofovir based ARV regimens in 2011, information on the prevalence of low BMD in PLWHIV and receiving ART is still scarce in Malawi. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and associated factors of low BMD among adults living with HIV and receiving ART in Blantyre, Malawi.

Alendronate improves bone mineral density in perinatally HIV-infected children and adolescents with low bone mineral density for age.

Perinatally HIV-infected (PHIV) children and adolescents with low bone mineral density (BMD) may be at higher risk of osteoporosis and fractures in later life than their uninfected peers. Bisphosphona...

Severity of reduced bone mineral density and risk of fractures in long-term survivors of childhood leukemia and lymphoma undergoing guideline-recommended surveillance for bone health.

Survivors of childhood leukemia/lymphoma are at increased risk for reduced bone mineral density (BMD). The authors sought to determine the frequency of reduced BMD detected by off-therapy surveillance...

Prevalent vertebral fracture is dominantly associated with spinal microstructural deterioration rather than bone mineral density in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

An assessment of bone strength based on bone mineral density (BMD) underestimates the risk of fracture in patients with diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, using the trabecular bone score (TBS) for est...

Bone density status in a large population of patients with anorexia nervosa.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is associated with multiple medical complications. One of the rare permanent complications of AN is the deleterious effect that it has on a patient's bone mineral density (BMD). ...

Multicentre Study To Assess Changes In Bone Mineral Density Of The Switch From Protease Inhibitors To Dolutegravir In HIV-1-Infected Subjects With Low Bone Mineral Density

Protease inhibitors (PI) have been associated with an acceleration of bone mineral density loss in HIV-infected individuals because of an enhanced osteoclast activity, although some contro...

Treating Idiopathic Inflammatory Myopathies Related Reduced Bone Mineral Density With Denosumab or Zoledronic Acid

Idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM) patients are at high risk of development of reduced bone mineral density due to impairment of functional status due to the disease and a relatively...

Safety and Effectiveness of Oral Alendronate Therapy on Bone Mineral Density in HIV-infected Children and Adolescents With Low Bone Mineral Density

HIV-infected children, youth, and adults have lower bone mineral density (BMD) than would be expected for HIV-uninfected people of similar age, weight and race. As the majority of perinata...

Long Term Follow-up of Bone Mineral Density in Hormone Treated Turner Syndrome

Turner Syndrome (TS) is associated with osteopenia and osteoporosis. Reduced bone mineral density (BMD) and increased risk of fractures are present in many younger and middle-aged women wi...

Bisphosphonate Therapy for HIV-Infected Adults With Decreased Bone Mineral Density

Bisphosphonates are a type of drug used to prevent and treat bone loss. The purpose of this study is to determine if zoledronate, an investigational bisphosphonate, can improve bone minera...

Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions

The amount of mineral per square centimeter of BONE. This is the definition used in clinical practice. Actual bone density would be expressed in grams per milliliter. It is most frequently measured by X-RAY ABSORPTIOMETRY or TOMOGRAPHY, X RAY COMPUTED. Bone density is an important predictor for OSTEOPOROSIS.

Decalcification of bone or abnormal bone development due to chronic KIDNEY DISEASES, in which 1,25-DIHYDROXYVITAMIN D3 synthesis by the kidneys is impaired, leading to reduced negative feedback on PARATHYROID HORMONE. The resulting SECONDARY HYPERPARATHYROIDISM eventually leads to bone disorders.

Decrease, loss, or removal of the mineral constituents of bones. Temporary loss of bone mineral content is especially associated with space flight, weightlessness, and extended immobilization. OSTEOPOROSIS is permanent, includes reduction of total bone mass, and is associated with increased rate of fractures. CALCIFICATION, PHYSIOLOGIC is the process of bone remineralizing. (From Dorland, 27th ed; Stedman, 25th ed; Nicogossian, Space Physiology and Medicine, 2d ed, pp327-33)

Removal of mineral constituents or salts from bone or bone tissue. Demineralization is used as a method of studying bone strength and bone chemistry.
