Summary of "Cumulative radiation exposure during current scoliosis management."

Patients undergoing scoliosis management are exposed to repeated radiological imaging. Previous studies have shown an increase in incidence of cancer among these patients. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the radiographic examinations and cumulative radiation dose to which scoliotic patients are exposed. A secondary aim was to compare in-house algorithms of scoliosis management and radiographic follow-up to international spine centres and current consensus literature.

Medical and Biotech [MESH] Definitions

The science concerned with problems of radiation protection relevant to reducing or preventing radiation exposure, and the effects of ionizing radiation on humans and their environment.

Devices that measure exposure to IONIZING RADIATION.

Phenomenon in which organisms are subjected to radiation.

Exposure of the female parent, human or animal, to potentially harmful chemical, physical, or biological agents in the environment or to environmental factors that may include ionizing radiation, pathogenic organisms, or toxic chemicals that may affect offspring. It includes pre-conception maternal exposure.

A condition caused by a brief whole body exposure to more than one sievert dose equivalent of radiation. Acute radiation syndrome is initially characterized by ANOREXIA; NAUSEA; VOMITING; but can progress to hematological, gastrointestinal, neurological, pulmonary, and other major organ dysfunction.
