Mathematics anxiety (MA) is an important risk factor hindering the development of confidence and capability in mathematics and participation in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics wo...
We are used to thinking of mathematics as a symbolic activity. Here I argue that it may also be seen as a performative one. Making an analogy with music, I draw attention to the ways in which mathemat...
Dot enumeration is the basic mathematics competency in young children and a significant indicator of later mathematics achievement.
A new type of dynamics called laminar chaos was recently discovered through a theoretical analysis of a scalar delay differential equation with time-varying delay. Laminar chaos is a low-dimensional d...
Associations between household chaos and childhood overweight have been identified, but the mechanisms of association are not clearly established in young children, with some studies linking higher ch...
Transactional sex is widely believed to be among the driving factors for the high HIV rates among adolescent girls and young women in Kenya. We will pilot a randomized trial among men in K...
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact of the optimal and late initiation of dialysis on the mortality and quality of life in advanced chronic kidney disease patients by the D...
Nicotine dependence is prevalent in society, cigarette smoking is associated with several known health risks, and most dependent individuals find it very difficult to stop smoking cigarett...
The purpose of this study was to see if reminder letters and a large raffle prize would encourage health care workers to receive influenza vaccinations.
The purpose of this study is to determine whether prize reinforcement contingency management combined with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)are effective in the treatment of patients with...
The study of systems which respond disproportionately (nonlinearly) to initial conditions or perturbing stimuli. Nonlinear systems may exhibit "chaos" which is classically characterized as sensitive dependence on initial conditions. Chaotic systems, while distinguished from more ordered periodic systems, are not random. When their behavior over time is appropriately displayed (in "phase space"), constraints are evident which are described by "strange attractors". Phase space representations of chaotic systems, or strange attractors, usually reveal fractal (FRACTALS) self-similarity across time scales. Natural, including biological, systems often display nonlinear dynamics and chaos.
The deductive study of shape, quantity, and dependence. (From McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Scientific and Technical Terms, 6th ed)
The branch of mathematics dealing with the purely logical properties of probability. Its theorems underlie most statistical methods. (Last, A Dictionary of Epidemiology, 2d ed)
An order of large, long-necked, long-legged, flightless birds, found in South America. Known as rheas, they are sometimes called American ostriches, though they are in a separate order from true OSTRICHES.
