Blowing up money? The earnings penalty of smoking in the 1970s and the 21st century.

We analyze the earnings penalty of smoking among Swedish twins in two social contexts: the 1970s, when smoking was common and widely accepted and when there were relatively few tobacco laws aiming to reduce smoking; and the 2000s, when smoking had become more expensive, stigmatizing and less common, and when tobacco laws and regulations had intensified. The results show that the short-term earnings penalty of smoking was much higher in the 21st century than in the 1970s for men. For women, smokers had on av...

Adaptions of field PRRSVs in Marc-145 cells were determined by variations in the minor envelope proteins GP2a-GP3.

The recent rapid evolution of PRRSVs has resulted in certain biological characteristic changes, such as the fact that an increasing number of field PRRSVs can be isolated from PAMs but not from Marc-145 cells. In this study, we first isolated Marc-145-unadaptive field PRRSV strains from PAMs; sequence analysis showed that these PRRSVs belong to the HP-PRRSV (lineage 8) branch or NADC30-Like (lineage 1) branch. We further found major variations in ORF2-4 regions. To explore the viral adaptation mechanisms in...

Dose-Dependent Lowering of Mutant Huntingtin Using Antisense Oligonucleotides in Huntington Disease Patients.

On December 11 of 2017, Ionis Pharmaceuticals published a press release announcing dose-dependent reductions of mutant huntingtin protein in their HTTRx Phase 1/2a study in Huntington disease (HD) patients. The results from this Ionis trial have gained much attention from the patient community and the oligonucleotide therapeutics field, since it is the first trial targeting the cause of HD, namely the mutant huntingtin protein, using antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs). The press release also states that the ...

An Investigation of the Probability of Reciprocation in a Risk Reduction Model of Sharing.

A laboratory study investigated whether reductions in the probability of reciprocation would influence sharing in situations of shortfall risk. Choice in twelve adults was evaluated against the predictions of a risk-reduction model of sharing derived from a risk-sensitive foraging theory (the energy-budget rule). Participants responded on a computer task to earn hypothetical money which could be later exchanged for real money. If participants selected the sharing option, their earnings were pooled and split...

Enzyme hydrolysates of ginseng marc polysaccharides promote the phagocytic activity of macrophages via activation of TLR2 and Mer tyrosine kinase.

Although ginseng marc is a by-product obtained during manufacturing of various commercial ginseng products and has been routinely discarded as a waste, it still contains considerable amounts of potential bioactive compounds, including saponins and polysaccharides. Previously, we reported that ginseng oligosaccharides derived from ginseng marc polysaccharides by enzymatic hydrolysis exert immunostimulatory activities in macrophages and these activated macrophages are in turn able to inhibit the growth of ski...

Cheating behavior in children: Integrating gaze allocation and social awareness.

Children's cheating and factors supporting honesty are not well understood. The current work explored variables involved in children's cheating through eye-tracking and an implicit manipulation in which extrinsic awareness of the effects of one's behaviors on others was primed. Participants played a computer game with the option for a monetary gain in which they could earn more if they selectively erred in response to more profitable stimuli. Results show that children cheat by making selective effort towar...

Can cultural consumption increase future earnings? Exploring the economic returns to cultural capital.

Cultural consumption is often viewed as a form of embodied cultural capital which can be converted into economic rewards (e.g., earnings) because such practices increase the likelihood of moving into more advantaged social positions. However, quantitative evidence supporting this theory remains uncertain because it is often unable to rule out alternative explanations. Cultural consumption appears to influence hiring decisions in some elite firms, in both the US and the UK, but it is unclear whether these pr...

Multiple antiviral approaches of (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) against porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus infection in vitro.

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) remains an economically important pathogen in the global pig industry, effective measures to control the virus are still lacking. (-)-Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), the most abundant and bioactive catechin in green tea, has been reported to have antiviral effect against the diverse groups of viruses. In this study, the comprehensive anti-PRRSV activity of EGCG was investigated using various in vitro assays. EGCG effectively inhibited PRRSV infe...

Can Women Have Children and a Career? IV Evidence from IVF Treatments.

This paper introduces a new IV strategy based on IVF (in vitro fertilization) induced fertility variation among childless women to estimate the causal effect of having children on their career. For this purpose, we use administrative data on IVF treated women in Denmark. Because observed chances of IVF success do not depend on labor market histories, IVF treatment success provides a plausible instrument for childbearing. Our IV estimates indicate that fertility effects on earnings are: (i) negative, large, ...

RNA Therapeutics (Almost) Comes of Age: Targeting, Delivery and Endosomal Escape.

Utilizing host endogenous microRNAs to negatively regulate the replication of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus in MARC-145 cells.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) contribute to gene regulation at the post-transcriptional level and are capable of mRNA silencing by binding to target sites exhibiting high degrees of complementarity. Therefore, cloning host miRNA-recognition sequences into the genome of RNA viruses represents a rational strategy for manipulating viral replication. Here, we performed deep sequencing to obtain small-RNA (sRNA)-expression profiles from in vitro-cultured MARC-145 cells post infection with porcine reproductive and respirato...

Medical Care Spending and Labor Market Outcomes: Evidence from Workers' Compensation Reforms.

Medical care represents an important component of workers' compensation benefits with the potential to improve health and post-injury labor outcomes, but little is known about the relationship between medical care spending and the labor outcomes of injured workers. We exploit the 2003--2004 California workers' compensation reforms which reduced medical spending disproportionately for workers incurring low back injuries. We link administrative claims data to earnings records for injured workers and their uni...

Galectin-3 inhibits replication of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus by interacting with viral Nsp12 in vitro.

Porcine galectin-3 (GAL3) is a 29-kDa protein encoded by a single gene, LGALS3, located on chromosome 1. Here, using a yeast two-hybrid screen of a cDNA library from porcine alveolar macrophage cells (PAMs), we report for the first time that GAL3 interacts with nonstructural protein 12 (Nsp12) of the porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV). Although extensive research has focused on porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS), little is known about the pathogen and host interact...
