The Rosacea-specific Quality-of-Life instrument (RosQol): Revision and validation among Chinese patients.

Rosacea is a common chronic facial disorder that affects patients' health-related quality of life; the only questionnaire designed specifically for rosacea is the Rosacea-specific Quality-of-Life instrument (RosQol). However, the questionnaire has not been validated among Chinese patients. This study aimed to validate the Chinese version of the RosQol. First, we translated the questionnaire into Chinese. Then, rosacea patients completed the RosQol and Dermatology Life Quality Index, indicating the disease's...

Psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the Functioning Assessment Short Test (FAST) in bipolar disorder.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is often associated with significant functional impairment. However, there is currently no valid and reliable instrument for this variable that is both brief and easy to administer in China. We thus aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the Functioning Assessment Short Test (FAST) in Chinese adults with BD.

OPP labelling enables total protein synthesis quantification in CHO production cell lines at the single-cell level.

Accurate measurement of global and specific protein synthesis rates becomes increasingly important, especially in the context of biotechnological applications such as process modelling or selection of production cell clones. While quantification of total protein translation across whole cell populations is easily achieved, methods that are capable of tracking population dynamics at the single-cell level are still lacking. To address this need, we applied O-propargyl-puromycin (OPP) labelling to assess total...

Experimental research requires valid and sensitive measures of alcohol intake, and this is a step in the right direction: commentary on Leeman et al. (2018).

The paper by Leeman and colleagues (2018) makes an important contribution to the broader literature on cognitive bias modification (CBM) for alcohol use disorders. In a balanced discussion, the authors speculate on possible explanations for their null findings, including failure of CBM to change cognitive biases, participant characteristics, and the suitability and sensitivity of the alcohol self-administration paradigm that was the primary outcome measure. The former explanations have been the subject of r...

Characterization of a conjunctival melanoma cell line CM-AS16, newly-established from a metastatic Han Chinese patient.

Conjunctival melanoma (CM) is associated with metastases formation, can be fatal, and occurs in all different races. While cell lines are essential for experimental research, all available CM cell lines are derived from Caucasian patients. Furthermore, they are not derived from metastases. We aimed to establish a new CM cell line from a parotid metastasis in a Han Chinese patient and to depict its characteristics. The novel cell line, CM-AS16, was obtained from a surgical parotid sample and determined as a ...

Commentary on De Genna et al. (2017): Why should we be concerned about adolescent mothers and their risks for long-term risky alcohol consumption over the life course?

Life transitions often coincide with changes in patterns of alcohol consumption. One such transition, pregnancy, is commonly associated with a decline in or cessation of alcohol consumption (Tran et al. 2015). Despite convincing evidence of this decline in consumption in pregnancy, we know relatively little about the longer term consequences of this reduction in alcohol use or how maternal age at first birth may be related to subsequent alcohol use trajectories. The study results reported by De Genna et a...

Understanding the unbalance of interest in taxi market based on drivers' service profit margins.

Nowadays, ride-hailing services have been established as a part of the urban transportation. Their arrival has remade the profit structure and resulted in the unbalance of interest in taxi market. Here, we establish the service models of taxis, carpooling, and car-hailing under "Internet +" from the perspective of profit margins, to perform a comparative analysis among the different services.

A Comparative Study of Medical Device Regulations:: US, Europe, Canada, and Taiwan.

The medical device industry is an industry dealing with multiple types of products covering a wide range of applications. As the safety and effectiveness of medical devices are vital to human health, the products must be managed by strict regulations according to the different risk levels. A total product life cycle regulatory system including product design, manufacture, premarket gate keeping, and postmarket monitoring is a common framework for medical device regulations. However, the variety and innovati...

Association between ABCA1 gene polymorphisms and the therapeutic response to donepezil therapy in Han Chinese patients with Alzheimer's disease.

It is reported that ABCA1, which plays a key role in cholesterol transport and apolipoprotein E (APOE) metabolism in the brain, is related to Alzheimer's disease. However, few studies have focused on the relationship between the ABCA1 gene and the therapeutic response to donepezil (DNP), which has been shown to be related to reduced sAPP production. This study evaluated the association between the ABCA1 gene polymorphism and the clinical response to donepezil therapy in Han Chinese patients with Alzheimer's ...

Neurodevelopment and behavior in neonatal oxys rats with genetically determined accelerated senescence.

Study of the developmental characteristics and mechanisms of senescence is an important field in brain aging research. The OXYS strain was selected from Wistar rats in Novosibirsk, and it serves as a rat model of accelerated aging. Previously, neurodegenerative processes and aberrant behavior were reported in experiments with adult OXYS rats. In our study, neurodevelopmental reflexes, neuronal density in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus, and global DNA methylation in the hippocampus are compared betwee...

Innovation at the Intersection of Clinical Trials and Real-World Data Science to Advance Patient Care.

While efficacy and safety data collected from randomized clinical trials are the evidentiary standard for determining market authorization, this alone may no longer be sufficient to address the needs of key stakeholders (regulators, providers, and payers) and guarantee long-term success of pharmaceutical products. There is a heightened interest from stakeholders on understanding the use of real-world evidence (RWE) to substantiate benefit-risk assessment and support the value of a new drug. This review prov...
