Fantasy sports are a popular way for individuals to add another layer of enjoyment to their interest in sports. While fantasy sports have been around for many years, access to big data sets and computer power to process them is a relatively new phenomenon, as well as the ability to compete in daily competitions and not just season-long campaigns. We posit that access to new and yet unforeseen data, models, and computing power to manage it, when viewed through the lens of efficient market hypothesis, will ca...
Youths identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or another nonheterosexual identity (sexual minority youths) report more violence victimization, substance use, and suicide risk than do heterosexual youths (1). These disparities are generally attributed to minority stress (the process through which stigma directed toward sexual minorities influences health outcomes) (2,3). Sexual minority youths might experience negative outcomes associated with minority stress differently across sexual identities, but to date...
Using New York City as an example, this research explores reasons for the consistently poor financial performance of three start-up health plans (Health Republic, CareConnect, and Oscar) while other health plans have performed relatively well in the same market.
We report the discovery of the first cetacean pegivirus (family Flaviviridae) using a next-generation sequencing approach. One of two infected bottlenose dolphins had elevated activities of liver enzymes, which may suggest hepatocellular injury. Further research is needed to determine the epidemiology and pathogenicity of dolphin pegivirus.
This article provides a status report on the global burden of cancer worldwide using the GLOBOCAN 2018 estimates of cancer incidence and mortality produced by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, with a focus on geographic variability across 20 world regions. There will be an estimated 18.1 million new cancer cases (17.0 million excluding nonmelanoma skin cancer) and 9.6 million cancer deaths (9.5 million excluding nonmelanoma skin cancer) in 2018. In both sexes combined, lung cancer is the most...
This study focuses on predicting stock closing prices by using recurrent neural networks (RNNs). A long short-term memory (LSTM) model, a type of RNN coupled with stock basic trading data and technical indicators, is introduced as a novel method to predict the closing price of the stock market. We realize dimension reduction for the technical indicators by conducting principal component analysis (PCA). To train the model, some optimization strategies are followed, including adaptive moment estimation (Adam)...
Armed conflict, natural disaster, and forced displacement affect millions of children each year. Such humanitarian crises increase the risk of family separation, erode existing support networks, and often result in economic loss, increasing children's vulnerability to violence, exploitation, neglect, and abuse. Research is needed to understand these risks and vulnerabilities and guide donor investment towards the most effective interventions for improving the well-being of children in humanitarian contexts.
As one of emerging porcine viruses, atypical porcine pestivirus (APPV) was found in three continents since it emerged in 2015. It is now thought as the causative agent for congenital tremor type A-II in piglets. At the end of 2017, two APPV strains were identified from piglets with congenital tremor in Guangxi and Yunnan, China. The genome of APPV GX04/2017 strain was so far determined to be 11,534 nucleotides (nt) in length and contains a single open reading frame (ORF) encoding a polyprotein comprising 3,...
Gonococcal antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has become a global threat significantly hampering the control of gonorrhea. Many socio-economic, biological, behavioral, and programmatic factors have played an important role in driving the emergence, transmission and spread of gonococcal AMR. However, research to address these scientific and programmatic questions is limited in China. Here we propose a ROADMAP (resistance surveillance, outcomes due to AMR, antibiotic stewardship and application, diagnostic tools,...
Evidence on the association between cigarette smoking and incident depression from the South African National Income Dynamics Study 2008-2014: mental health implications for a resource-limited setting.
As a leading global disease risk factor, cigarette smoking has declined in some developed countries, but its health consequences are not well established in sub-Saharan Africa. This is particularly evident in South Africa, where few investigations have quantified the dually-neglected challenges of cigarette smoking and depression, despite decades of research from developed countries. We investigated the association between cigarette smoking and incident depression, with the hypothesis that adolescents are p...
With a majority of 'Yes' votes in the Constitutional Referendum of 2017, Turkey continued its drift towards an autocracy. By the will of the Turkish people, this referendum transferred practically all executive power to president Erdoğan. However, the referendum was confronted with a substantial number of allegations of electoral misconducts and irregularities, ranging from state coercion of 'No' supporters to the controversial validity of unstamped ballots. Here we report the results of an election forens...
Herein, we report the comparison of two different mixing methods for reductive dechlorination of gamma-hexachlorocyclohexane (γ-HCH), aldrin, and p, p'-dichlorodiphenyl-trichloroethane (p, p'-DDT), using iron/palladium (Fe/Pd) bimetallic nanoparticles. A noticeable enhancement of the reaction rate was found when the reductive dechlorination reaction was carried out in an ultrasound bath as compared with a platform shaker. These enhancements could be attributed to (a) the continuous cleaning and chemical ac...
Most wine aroma compounds, including the varietal fraction, are produced or released during wine production and derived from microbial activity. Varietal aromas, typically defined as terpenes and thiols, have been described as derived from their non-volatile precursors, released during wine fermentation by different yeast hydrolytic enzymes. The perception of these minority aroma compounds depends on the chemical matrix of the wine, especially on the presence of majority aroma compounds, such as esters or h...
Research utilizing repeated-measures such as daily assessments with self-report and/or objective measures [e.g., physical activity (PA) monitors] are important in understanding health behaviors and informing practice and policy. However, studies that utilize daily assessment often encounter issues with attrition and non-compliance. The current research yielded high levels of retention and adherence with both self-report and objective daily measures. The purpose of this paper is to highlight and discuss stra...
The Cooperative Human Tissue Network, Midwestern Division, is a National Cancer Institute-funded program that provides quality research biospecimens to qualified investigators. Consented human tissues are procured according to researcher specifications for weight (size) and preservation type; weights of samples in significant demand and limited supply are negotiated. Weights of procured tissues are entered into a dedicated biospecimen database. This study seeks to provide guidance for acceptable tissue weig...
This study used several datasets of reported and serotyped invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) cases to estimate vaccine and non-vaccine type incidence in Hong Kong children. Incidence was analyzed by four time periods to indicate pre-PCV (period 1, 1995-2004), private market only (period 2, 2006-2009), and following early (period 3, 2010-2014, mixed use of 7-, 10- and 13-valent vaccines) and more than five years (period 4, 2015-2017, 13-valent vaccine only) of routine implementation (since September 2009)....
The established nurse transition-to-practice program offered at one Australian health service underwent significant changes in 2017. This study aimed to gain feedback from the participants in the 2016 and 2017 programs.
Several fluoroquinolone antibiotics have been associated with cardiac adverse effects, leading to the withdrawal of some of these agents from the market. Cardiac side effects such as QT prolongation and torsades de pointes (TdP) have also been observed with fluoroquinolones currently on the market. In order to evaluate the cardiac risk of fluoroquinolones as a class, and the comparative risk for each individual drug, we conducted a systematic review, meta-analysis, and network meta-analysis.
There is global interest in implementing national information systems to support healthcare, and the National Health Service in England (NHS) has a troubled 25-year history in this sphere. Our objective was to chronicle structural reorganizations within the NHS from 1973 to 2017, alongside concurrent national information technology (IT) strategies, as the basis for developing a conceptual model to aid understanding of the organizational factors involved.

During 2000-15, Arkansas Department of Health, Little Rock, AR, USA, investigated between one and six cases of mumps each year. From Aug 5, 2016, to Aug 5, 2017, the department received notification of more than 4000 suspected mumps cases in the second largest outbreak in the USA in the past 30 years.
Background Crackdowns on urban sites with concentrated criminal activity are sometimes followed by geographical relocation of crime. Is this also the case in cyberspace, where illegal websites and online networks can be wiped clean, but also quickly rebuilt and replaced on new servers and URLs? Methods I address this question in three steps. First, I measure MDMA trade in a large digital market for drugs, before and after the arrest of a leading MDMA seller in the same market. Second, I count the number of ...
