Workplace-based assessments (WBAs) are an integral part of specialist medical and dental training in the UK. Histopathology represents a very different training environment to the surgical specialities so it is important to know that the current WBAs are fit for purpose. A literature search revealed very little evidence regarding the perception of WBAs in histopathology. The aim of this study was therefore to assess the current perception of WBAs in histopathology by assessors and trainees.
Vitamin D has an important role in the immune system, and has been linked to rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and coronary artery disease (CAD). The exact mechanisms by which vitamin D is involved in these processes are still unclear. Therefore, we wanted to search for differences in expression of genes involved in the vitamin D receptor (VDR) activation pathway and genes that are known to alter upon vitamin D stimulation, in the aortic adventitia of CAD patients with and without RA.
Background and aims The recent economic crisis started in the USA in 2008 but quickly had worldwide impact. Ireland, Greece, and Portugal were in economic distress in 2009 and received rescue monetary packages from the European Union (EU) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in the following years. Meanwhile, the economic recovery has begun for those countries, but at different paces. The aim of the present study was to evaluate if the economic crisis influenced pain research outcomes, by performing a ...
Cell size is thought to play an important role in choosing between temporal and spatial sensing in chemotaxis. Large cells are thought to use spatial sensing due to large chemical difference at its ends whereas small cells are incapable of spatial sensing due to rapid homogenization of proteins within the cell. However, small cells have been found to polarize and large cells like sperm cells undergo temporal sensing. Thus, it remains an open question what exactly governs spatial versus temporal sensing. Her...
Polymerization shrinkage of resin composite can compromise the longevity of restorations. To minimize this problem, the monomeric composition of composites have been modified. The objective of this study was to conduct a meta-analysis to assess the clinical behavior of restorations performed with low polymerization shrinkage resin composite in comparison with traditional methacrylates-based resin composite. This systematic review was registered at Prospero data system (CRD42015023940). Studies were searched...
Some of the temporal variations and clock-like rhythms that govern several different health-related behaviors can be traced in near real-time with the help of search engine data. This is especially useful when studying phenomena where little or no traditional data exist. One specific area where traditional data are incomplete is the study of diurnal mood variations, or daily changes in individuals' overall mood state in relation to depression-like symptoms.
A rectoseminal vesicle fistula after a low anterior resection for rectal cancer is a rare complication despite their anatomic proximity. From a Medline search from 1966 to date, a total of twenty-one previous cases of coloseminal vesicle fistula have been reported. From these cases, eleven were a complication of laparoscopic low anterior resection for rectal cancer.
Word embeddings project semantically similar terms into nearby points in a vector space. When trained on clinical text, these embeddings can be leveraged to improve keyword search and text highlighting. In this paper, we present methods to refine the selection process of similar terms from multiple EMR-based word embeddings, and evaluate their performance quantitatively and qualitatively across multiple chart review tasks.
Heretofore undiscovered spin-0 or spin-1 bosons can mediate exotic spin-dependent interactions between standard model particles. Here, we carry out the first search for semileptonic spin-dependent interactions between matter and antimatter. We compare theoretical calculations and spectroscopic measurements of the hyperfine structure of antiprotonic helium to constrain exotic spin- and velocity-dependent interactions between electrons and antiprotons.
Phylogenetic relationships, biofilm formation, motility, antibiotic resistance and extended virulence genotypes among Escherichia coli strains from women with community-onset primitive acute pyelonephritis.
The present work set out to search for a virulence repertoire distinctive for Escherichia coli causing primitive acute pyelonephritis (APN). To this end, the virulence potential of 18 E. coli APN strains was genotypically and phenotypically assessed, comparatively with 19 strains causing recurrent cystitis (RC), and 16 clinically not significant (control, CO) strains. Most of the strains belong to phylogenetic group B1 (69.8%; p
If a component of the dark matter has dissipative interactions, it could collapse to form a thin dark disk in our Galaxy that is coplanar with the baryonic disk. It has been suggested that dark disks could explain a variety of observed phenomena, including periodic comet impacts. Using the first data release from the Gaia space observatory, we search for a dark disk via its effect on stellar kinematics in the Milky Way. Our new limits disfavor the presence of a thin dark matter disk, and we present updated...
Osório César's and Nise da Silveira's work tends to be featured in investigations of the relationship between artistic expression and psychiatric knowledge in Brazil in and around the 1950s. However, there were other experiences at the time, such as the painting done in the Praxis Therapy Department of the Juliano Moreira Colony, in Rio de Janeiro. The absence of any research of this experience prompted a search for documents that culminated in the analysis of old issues of Boletim da Colônia Juliano Mor...
The BRAF mutation is the most common driver in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) tumors. In recent years, gene fusions have also been recognized as important drivers of cancer in PTC. Previous studies have suggested that thyroid tumors with fusion genes frequently display an aggressive course. These observations prompted further exploration of gene fusions in PTC tumors. The aim was to search for previously unrecognized gene fusions using thyroid tissue samples from PTC patients.
As the elderly population and polypharmacy are increasing, it is predicted that interventions to enhance medication adherence, as dose administration aids (DAA), will grow too. One of the limitations of repackaging medicines into DAA is to assure the stability of medicines, and, therefore, their quality, efficacy and safety. Area covered: This article collects and summarises data of all the stability studies of repackaged medicines into DAAs, as the result of a computerized search in databases (PubMed, Goog...
Success of a future Mars Sample Return mission will depend on the correct choice of samples. Pyrolysis-FTIR can be employed as a triage instrument for Mars Sample Return. The technique can thermally dissociate minerals and organic matter for detection. Identification of certain mineral types can determine the habitability of the depositional environment, past or present, while detection of organic matter may suggest past or present habitation. In Mars' history, the Theiikian era represents an attractive tar...
The Raman spectra of twenty-two chemical warfare agents (CWAs) were measured: eleven nerve agents and their precursor, five blister agents, three lachrymators, one choking agent, and one vomit agent, in liquid or solid state in colorless transparent vials were analyzed using a portable Raman spectrometer, Xantus-2 from Rigaku Corporation, equipped with selectable excitation lasers (785nm and 1064nm). With 785nm excitation, characteristic Raman spectra composed of many sharp peaks were observed for twenty CW...
In recent years, incidences of invasive fungal infections have greatly increased, especially in immunosuppressed patients, but most today's antifungal drugs are not completely effective due to the development of drug resistance, as well as potential toxicity and adverse effects. Consequently, it is imperative to search for novel antifungal agents to combat fungal infections. This review will discuss the advances in the traditional antifungal therapy, and present an overview of novel strategies for the treat...
Objective The objective of this study was to review current literature on comparison of radiological outcome of cervical arthroplasty with fusion after anterior discectomy for radiculopathy. Methods A literature search was performed in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, COCHRANE, CENTRAL and CINAHL using a sensitive search string combination. Optimal psychopharmacotherapy is based upon the results of many different factors. One of the main factors is therapeutic alliance. The role of psychodynamic is very important in the context of good therapeutic alliance. Lack of mentalizing capacity implies disturbed view of psychopharmacotherapy. Therapeutic relationship and optimal alliance offers the frame for acceptance of psychiatric drugs as positive and useful for psychological growth. Our literature search of a recent papers relating psychopharmacol...
Distal sensory onset latency (DSOL), conduction velocity (SCV) and nerve action potential (SNAP) amplitudes are used in electrodiagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) beside motor conduction data. The aim of our study is to search whether the comparison of median-to-ulnar nerve sensory conduction adds an additional diagnostic value in CTS or not.
The aim of this paper is to present a database of isolated communities (CENISO) with high prevalence of genetic disorders or congenital anomalies in Brazil. We used two strategies to identify such communities: (1) a systematic literature review and (2) a "rumor strategy" based on anecdotal accounts. All rumors and reports were validated in a stepwise process. The bibliographical search identified 34 rumors and 245 rumors through the rumor strategy, and 144 were confirmed. A database like this one presented ...
In low-resource countries, a suture repair is still in common use due to the limited access to commercial mesh implants. The search for less expensive alternatives to the synthetic meshes has led to using mosquito nets. Sterilized mosquito net appears to be a low-cost and commonly available product that closely resembles commercially available meshes. However, the extent to which sterilization alters the structure of mosquito nets is still unknown. The aim of this research was to assess the effects of diffe...
Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are advanced artificial intelligence algorithms well suited to image classification tasks with variable features. These have been used to great effect in various real-world applications including handwriting recognition, face detection, image search, and fraud prevention. We sought to retrain a robust CNN with coronal computed tomography (CT) images to classify osteomeatal complex (OMC) occlusion and assess the performance of this technology with rhinologic data.
Neuromas are pathologic nerve distensions caused by a nerve's response to trauma, resulting in a dysfunctional to non-functional nerve. Depending on the severance of the affected nerve, the resulting neuroma can be differentiated into continuous and stump neuroma. While neuroma formation has been investigated in animal models with enormous regenerative capacity, the search for differences in human response to nerve trauma on a molecular level ultimately seeks to identify reasons for functionally successful ...
