Synthesis and in vitro antitumor evaluation of some new thiophenes and thieno2,3-dpyrimidine derivatives.

New thiophene (2-13) and thienopyrimidine (15-27) derivatives have been synthesized. Twenty three compounds were screened against five cell lines namely; hepatocellular carcinoma (liver) HepG-2, epidermoid carcinoma (larynx) Hep-2, mammary gland (breast) MCF-7, human prostate cancer PC-3 and epithelioid cervix carcinoma HeLa. The results revealed that compounds 15,16,17,24 and 25 showed the highest antitumor activity against all tested cell lines compared to Doxorubicin. In order to explain the expected mod...

Reintervention Rates After Myomectomy, Endometrial Ablation, and Uterine Artery Embolization for Patients with Uterine Fibroids.

Women with uterine fibroids (UF) may undergo less invasive procedures than hysterectomy, including myomectomy, endometrial ablation (EA), and uterine artery embolization (UAE); however, long-term need for reintervention is not well characterized. We estimated reintervention rates for 5 years and identified predictors of reintervention.

High-grade Endometrial Carcinomas: Morphologic and Immunohistochemical Features, Diagnostic Challenges and Recommendations.

This review of challenging diagnostic issues concerning high-grade endometrial carcinomas is derived from the authors' review of the literature followed by discussions at the Endometrial Cancer Workshop sponsored by the International Society of Gynecological Pathologists in 2016. Recommendations presented are evidence-based, insofar as this is possible, given that the levels of evidence are weak or moderate due to small sample sizes and nonuniform diagnostic criteria used in many studies. High-grade endomet...

- Lung tumors are histologically heterogeneous, but classification of lung carcinoma has prognostic impact and increasingly, specific molecular correlates.

Estimating uterine source current during contractions using magnetomyography measurements.

Understanding the uterine source of the electrophysiological activity of contractions during pregnancy is of scientific interest and potential clinical applications. In this work, we propose a method to estimate uterine source currents from magnetomyography (MMG) temporal course measurements on the abdominal surface. In particular, we develop a linear forward model, based on the quasistatic Maxwell's equations and a realistic four-compartment volume conductor, relating the magnetic fields to the source curr...

Microcystic serous cystadenoma: An uncommon neoplasm of pancreas. Report of two cases.

Microcystic variant of serous cystadenoma of the pancreas is a rare neoplasm; essentially located in the body or tail of the pancreas and associated with the von Hippel-Lindau. Often, patients are asymptomatic and the neoplasm is incidentally discovered. Usually radiographic manifestations are characteristic. Histopathological examination revealed uniform clear cuboidal cells; they can be confused with other clear cell neoplasms like renal cell carcinomas, well-differentiated neuroendocrine tumors and solid...

In vitro antitumor activity of progesterone in human adrenocortical carcinoma.

The management of patients with adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) is challenging. As mitotane and chemotherapy show limited efficacy, there is an urgent need to develop therapeutic approaches. The aim of this study was to investigate the antitumor activity of progesterone and explore the molecular mechanisms underlying its cytotoxic effects in the NCI-H295R cell line and primary cell cultures derived from ACC patients.

Gastric Ulcer Mimicking Malignancy on FDG PET/CT.

A 52-year-old woman with newly diagnosed cervical carcinoma was referred an F-FDG PET/CT for staging. The PET/CT images demonstrated the known carcinoma and multiple enlarged lymph nodes with increased FDG activity. In addition, there was a focus of intense FDG activity characteristic of hypermetabolic malignancy in the region of gastric antrum. Finally, this lesion was confirmed as gastric ulcer by biopsy. This patient responded well to antiulcer treatment.

Clinical utility of susceptibility-weighted MR sequence for the evaluation of uterine sarcomas.

High intensity intra-tumoral hemorrhagic necrosis on T1-weighted images is a suggestive finding for uterine sarcomas, however, the reported prevalence varies. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the capability of susceptibility-weighted MR sequences (SWS) for the diagnosis of uterine sarcomas.

Dedifferentiated endometrial carcinoma: an ongoing diagnostic dilemma.

Tumours of uterine corpus are the most common gynaecological malignancies. The clinicopathological features of most of these tumours are well understood; however, dedifferentiated endometrial carcinoma still requires a lot of research to establish adequate management guidelines. The entity was first described in 2006 and is an aggressive tumour with poor prognosis. We present two cases of this tumour with a literature review, emphasising morphologic and immunohistochemical features that may help ...

Management of newly diagnosed or recurrent ovarian cancer.

The treatment of newly diagnosed or recurrent ovarian cancer has changed significantly in recent years, with an increased number of treatment options available. Surgery and combination treatment with carboplatin and paclitaxel are the standard of care for patients with newly diagnosed disease, although the use of neoadjuvant chemotherapy is increasing. Clinical strategies have also evolved along with the understanding that ovarian cancer is not one disease but rather comprises several with different histolo...

Seasonal Variation in Japanese Central Serous Chorioretinopathy.

We investigate seasonal variations found in patients with central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC).

Safety and efficacy of durvalumab in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma: results from a phase I/II expansion cohort.

Durvalumab selectively blocks programmed cell death ligand-1 (PD-L1) binding to programmed cell death-1. Encouraging clinical activity and manageable safety were reported in urothelial carcinoma, non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC), hepatocellular carcinoma (HC) and small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) in a multicenter phase I/II study. Safety and clinical activity in recurrent/metastatic head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) were evaluated in the expansion phase.

The prognostic factors influencing overall survival in uterine cervical cancer with brain metastasis.

The occurrence of brain metastasis (BM) has increased due to improved overall survival (OS) in uterine cervical cancer. However, research about prognostic factors and therapeutic guidelines for BM in uterine cervical cancer remains scarce due to the rarity of BM in this type of cancer. The present study evaluated the clinical characteristics and prognostic factors influencing OS in patients with BM from uterine cervical cancer.

Central Serous Chorioretinopathy: Clinical Characteristics Associated with Visual Outcomes.

Predictors of Outcome During Eplerenone Therapy in Chronic Central Serous Chorioretinopathy:A Prospective, Open-Label Pilot Clinical Study.

To assess the treatment response and predictive factors following eplerenone treatment in chronic central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR).

The diagnostic challenge of ovarian carcinoma in normal-sized ovaries: a report of two cases.

Normal-sized ovarian carcinoma syndrome (NOCS) is a rare condition characterised by malignancy identified in ovaries of normal size with abdominal metastasis. We report two cases of advanced ovarian carcinoma with ovaries of normal size. The first case was a 13-year-old adolescent with malignant ascites and bilateral normal sized multicystic ovaries detected on ultrasound. Serum cancer antigen 125 (CA 125) and lactate dehydrogenase were markedly raised. A computed tomography (CT) scan showed the presence of...

GATA3 as a master regulator and therapeutic target in ovarian high-grade serous carcinoma stem cells.

Ovarian high-grade serous carcinoma (HGSC) is the most lethal gynecological malignancy. Prevailing evidences suggest that drug resistance and recurrence of ovarian HGSC are caused by the presence of cancer stem cells. Therefore, targeting cancer stems is appealing, however, all attempts to date, have failed. To circumvent this limit, we analyzed differential transcriptomes at early differentiation of ovarian HGSC stem cells and identified the developmental transcription factor GATA3 as highly expressed in s...

Effects of ionizing radiation and HPSE1 inhibition on the invasion of oral tongue carcinoma cells on human extracellular matrices in vitro.

Chemoradiation is an established approach in the treatment of advanced oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (OTSCC), but therapy may cause severe side-effects due to signal interchanges between carcinoma and the tumour microenvironment (TME). In this study, we examined the potential use of our human 3D myoma disc and Myogel models in in vitro chemoradiation studies by analysing the effects of ionizing radiation (IR) and the combined effect of heparanase I (HPSE1) inhibitors and IR on OTSCC cell proliferation...

GENETIC RISK FACTORS IN ACUTE CENTRAL SEROUS CHORIORETINOPATHY.

Aberrant Nuclear Localization of aPKCλ/ι is Associated With Poorer Prognosis in Uterine Cervical Cancer.

We previously reported that aberrant expression of atypical protein kinase C λ/ι (aPKCλ/ι) in low-grade squamous intraepithelial uterine cervix lesions was associated with an increased risk of progression to higher grade. This study aimed to investigate aPKCλ/ι expression patterns in cervical squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and its association with disease progression. We immunohistochemically assessed aPKCλ/ι expression in 168 SCC samples and 13 normal uterine cervix samples. In 69.0% of SCC cases, a...

Discovery and optimization of a series of 3-substituted indazole derivatives as multi-target kinase inhibitors for the treatment of lung squamous cell carcinoma.

Although lung adenocarcinoma patients have benefited from the development of targeted therapy, patients with lung squamous cell carcinoma (SqCC) have no effective treatment due to the complexity and heterogeneity of the disease. Therefore, basing on the genetic analysis of mutations in lung squamous cell carcinoma to design multi-target inhibitors represents a potential strategy for the medical treatment. In this study, through screening an in-house focused library, we identified an interesting indazole sca...

The effects of Bisphenol A (BPA) on sympathetic nerve fibers in the uterine wall of the domestic pig.

Bisphenol A (BPA), used in the production of plastic, shows multidirectional negative effects on the living organism. BPA may affect the reproductive and nervous systems; however, its influence on the nerves supplying the uterus has not been studied. During the present study, the impact of BPA on the sympathetic nerves in the uterus was investigated using a double immunofluorescence technique. The results have shown that even low doses of BPA may change the neurochemical characterization of uterine sympathe...

Scopolamine for uterine involution of dairy cows.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of administration of scopolamine (a parasympatholytic drug) immediately after delivery, on uterine involution in dairy cows. The cows were divided into two groups: group T (treated with scopolamine butylbromide 40 mg/100 kg P.V., within 24 h of delivery) and group C (treated with 2 ml/q of saline solution). The cows were monitored at T0, within 24 h of delivery, T7, T14, T28 and T40 respectively 7th, 14th, 28th and 40 day postpartum, by measurin...

Uterine Cancer Incidence and Mortality - United States, 1999-2016.

Uterine cancer is one of the few cancers with increasing incidence and mortality in the United States, reflecting, in part, increases in the prevalence of overweight and obesity since the 1980s (1). It is the fourth most common cancer diagnosed and the seventh most common cause of cancer death among U.S. women (1). To assess recent trends in uterine cancer incidence and mortality by race and ethnicity, CDC analyzed incidence data from CDC's National Program of Cancer Registries (NPCR) and the National Cance...
