Prehospital medical teams are commonly required to administer a range of medications for urgent stabilisation and treatment. The safe preparation of medications during resuscitation requires attention, time and resources, and can be a source of medication error. In our two road and HEMS (Helicopter Emergency Medical Service) prehospital services, medication errors are mitigated by predrawing commonly used medications to set concentrations daily (Hunter Retrieval Service, HRS) or second-daily (CareFlight Syd...
To compare the quality of sleep between medical and non-medical undergraduate students.
This report details the cost effectiveness of a non-nurse patient navigation (PN) program that was implemented at the University of Chicago Medical Center to increase colonoscopy-based colorectal cancer (CRC) screening.
Disability evaluation is complex. The association between mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) history and VA service-connected disability (SCD) ratings can have implications for disability processes in the civilian population. We examined the association of VA SCD ratings with lifetime mTBI exposure in three models: any mTBI, total mTBI number, and blast-related mTBI.
To estimate the health service use and direct healthcare costs attributable to diabetes using best available data and methods.
Clinical trial registry is a free, open access platform which registers clinical trials, often done prospectively, minimizing the risk of selective reporting, publication bias and replication of trials, as well as allowing individuals to participate in the study. A prospective clinical trial registration has been made mandatory by International Committee of Medical Journals Editors (ICMJE), FDA US, World Medical Association (WMA) and International Society of Physical Therapy Journal Editors (ISPJE), followe...
This paper provides information about the medical preparedness and response system for radiation emergencies in Republic of Korea. The National Radiation Emergency Medical Center (NREMC) oversees medical affairs in the Korean radiological disaster prevention system since its establishment in 2002. It has dedicated itself to set up a nationwide radiation emergency medicine network with 24 designated radiation emergency hospitals. NREMC, as one division under the Korea Institute of Radiological And Medical Sc...
Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) is one of the most curable malignancies. Despite its effectiveness, chemotherapy is often associated with adverse events (AEs) such as nausea, anorexia, and impairment of general well-being. Our objective was to assess the extent of medical cannabis use among HL patients and evaluate its efficacy in controlling chemotherapy-related AEs. Patterns of medical cannabis use and efficacy were evaluated using physician-completed application forms, medical files, and patient-completed question...
Several medical specialty organizations and the American Telemedicine Association have developed specialty-specific guidelines and tips for optimal telemedicine use. Formal introductory education for medical students appears to lag behind these other developments.
The extent of medical trainees' engagement in scholarly medical education publication is not well described. This study sought to quantify the prevalence of medical student- and resident-authored medical education publications over 15 years, a benchmark essential for understanding current and future trends in trainee scholarship.
Periodontal disease and caries are the most common causes of tooth loss worldwide. Studies have demonstrated strong association between periodontitis and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Medical doctors, who are the primary healthcare providers, seldom advise women to seek dental care during pregnancy. This study was undertaken to explore the knowledge, attitudes and behaviours of medical doctors towards oral health and to identify the barriers of prenatal periodontal healthcare in their practices and its possib...
To investigate the relationship between mental health issues and medical career interest among undergraduate premedical students, and to explore whether this association varies by gender.
Results of Fabry Disease Screening in Male Pre-End Stage Renal Disease Patients with Unknown Etiology Found Through the Platform of a Chronic Kidney Disease Education Program in a Northern Taiwan Medical Center.
Fabry disease (FD), a rare x-lined genetic disorder is a cause of renal deterioration. The phenotype of FD is highly variable and nonspecific, and correct diagnosis has always been delayed. We aimed to explore the prevalence and clinical presentation of FD in this high-risk male population in a Northern Taiwan medical center.
Previous studies have suggested an association of IgG levels (before and after IVIG infusion) with clinical outcomes in Kawasaki disease. A retrospective analysis was performed that included 418 patients with KD admitted to Tokyo Women's Medical University Yachiyo Medical Center to evaluate pre- and post-IVIG IgG levels and its relation to outcomes. All patients received an initial IVIG infusion and aspirin; IgG levels were measured in 350 patients before IVIG (pre-IVIG IgG levels) and in 373 patients 48 h...
Many reef fishes are capable of feeding on chemically-defended benthic prey, such as soft (alcyonarian) corals; however, little is known about the molecular mechanisms that underpin allelochemical biotransformation and detoxification. Butterflyfishes (Chaetodon: Chaetdontidae) are a useful group for comparatively exploring links between biotransformation enzymes and diet, because they commonly feed on chemically defended prey. Moreover, diets of some species vary among geographic locations. This study compa...
Nonbattle injury (NBI) among deployed US service members increases the burden on medical systems and results in high rates of attrition, affecting the available force. The possible causes and trends of NBI in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars have, to date, not been comprehensively described.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of an interprofessional Transitions of Care (TOC) service on 30-day hospital reutilization inclusive of hospital readmissions and ED visits. This was a retrospective cohort study including patients discharged from an academic medical center between September 2013 and October 2014. Patients scheduled for a hospital follow-up visit in the post-acute care clinic (PACC) were included in the intervention group and patients without a post-discharge interprofe...
To evaluate the knowledge, attitude and practice of self-medication in medical undergraduate students.
There is a high heterogeneity in the structure of postgraduate medical training evaluation worldwide. However, in contrast to other countries, there have been no scientific studies of the final medical board examination, in Portugal. The present study aimed to evaluate the adequacy of the medical board examination including its validity as measured by its association with medical school grade average and national seriation examination.
To determine whether an interprofessional intervention would improve the use and timing of a geriatric consultation on a hospitalist service.
The global refugee/migrant crisis of displacement because of persecution and conflict carries staggering implications of ambiguity and loss for the individuals affected. In 2013, approximately 25,000 displaced people sought asylum in the United States; many of whom have experienced state-sponsored physical and psychological torture. With Physicians for Human Rights (PHR), several medical student clinics work closely with immigration attorneys and University and Community based clinicians to assist U.S. asyl...
Large numbers of United States service members and veterans are enrolling in colleges and universities. Many are experiencing posttraumatic stress symptoms secondary to their military service, and these symptoms are associated with academic dysfunction. However, little is known about the mechanism(s) through which posttraumatic stress increases risk for academic difficulties. The goal of the current study was to evaluate perceived interpersonal relationship quality as a mediator of this association.
