Simulation study of alpha-neutron reactions from AmBe directional source using MCNP 6.1.1 with TENDL 2012, 2014, and 2017 libraries.

Angular dependence of Be(α, n)C was simulated in Monte-Carlo N-Particle transport 6.1.1 (MCNP) with TALYS Evaluated Nuclear Data Library (TENDL) 2012, 2014, and 2017 data to determine secondary neutron direction and energy for neutron imaging. The simulations consisted of a 90 μCi Am source and a 25 μm thick Be target. Neutrons emitted from the Be(α, n)C were collected at different angles of emission within the MCNP simulation, which will be compared to experimental data in the future. The MCNP simu...

Progress Toward Poliomyelitis Eradication - Pakistan, January 2017-September 2018.

Among the three wild poliovirus (WPV) serotypes, only WPV type 1 (WPV1) has been reported in polio cases or detected from environmental surveillance globally since 2012. Pakistan remains one of only three countries worldwide (the others are Afghanistan and Nigeria) that has never had interrupted WPV1 transmission. This report documents Pakistan's activities and progress toward polio eradication during January 2017-September 2018 and updates previous reports (1,2). In 2017, Pakistan reported eight WPV1 cases...

A combined Arctic-tropical climate pattern controlling the inter-annual climate variability of wintertime PM over the North China Plain.

In recent years, the Chinese government has made tremendous efforts to reduce the emissions of atmospheric pollutants throughout the country. An apparent improvement in air quality was observed in Beijing and its adjacent region during the winter of 2017/2018. However, caution should be taken in directly attributing this improvement to air control actions without taking the effects of climate variability into account. Here, we develop a statistical prediction model that can successfully predict the variabil...

Seasonality of antidepressant prescriptions and sick leaves.

The aim of the present study was to estimate the number of patients with a seasonal prescription pattern of antidepressants, which might be taken as a surrogate marker for medicated patients with seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Furthermore, we examined the time course of sick leaves for patients with seasonal and non-seasonal prescriptions of antidepressants. A retrospective analysis of prescription data of all patients insured by the Sickness Fund Burgenland (BGKK) between 2005 and 2016 was performed. P...

Snake Fungal Disease in Colubridae Snakes in Connecticut, USA in 2015 and 2017.

Snake fungal disease (SFD), caused by the fungus Ophidiomyces ophiodiicola, is an emerging threat to wild snake populations in the US. Data regarding its distribution, prevalence, and population-level impacts are sparse, and more information is needed to better manage SFD in the wild. In this study, we captured 38 wild snakes of five species in Connecticut in the summers of 2015 and 2017. Skin lesions were biopsied and evaluated histologically for fungal dermatitis. At least one individual from each species...

Rebuttal to "Flame retardants in UK furniture increase smoke toxicity more than they reduce fire growth rate" by S. McKenna, R. Birtles, K. Dickens, R. Walker, M. Spearpoint, A. Stec and R. Hull (2018 Apr;196:429-439. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2017.12.017. Epub 2017 Dec 5.).

Automatic Disease Annotation From Radiology Reports Using Artificial Intelligence Implemented by a Recurrent Neural Network.

Radiology reports are rich resources for biomedical researchers. Before utilization of radiology reports, experts must manually review these reports to identify the categories. In fact, automatically categorizing electronic medical record (EMR) text with key annotation is difficult because it has a free-text format. To address these problems, we developed an automated system for disease annotation.

Desmoplastic melanoma versus spindle cell melanoma: Incidence and survival, 1973 to 2017.

Desmoplastic melanoma (DM) and spindle cell melanoma (SCM) are 2 rare subtypes of melanoma. This study aims to investigate these 2 melanomas comprehensively by comparison.Cases were identified in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database (1973-2017).A total of 3657 DM and 4761 SCM cases were identified. DM's female-to-male ratio was 1:2 and SCM's was 0.62:1. The age distribution was similar. Both tumor mostly originated from skin and the eye and orbit was SCM-specific tumor site. Compa...

The Decline of Dengue in the Americas in 2017: Discussion of Multiple Hypotheses.

Since the 1980s, dengue incidence has increased 30-fold. However, in 2017, there was a noticeable reduction in reported dengue incidence cases within the Americas, including severe and fatal cases. Understanding the mechanism underlying dengue's incidence and decline in the Americas is vital for public health planning. We aimed to provide plausible explanations for the decline in 2017.

As part of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2017 (GBD 2017), we measured progress on 41 of 52 health-related SDG indicators and e...

Sympatric Ixodes-tick species: pattern of distribution and pathogen transmission within wild rodent populations.

The generalist tick Ixodes ricinus is the most important vector for tick-borne pathogens (TBP), including Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, in Europe. However, the involvement of other sympatric Ixodes ticks, such as the specialist vole tick I. trianguliceps, in the enzootic circulations of TBP remains unclear. We studied the distribution of I. ricinus and I. trianguliceps in Central Finland and estimated the TBP infection likelihood in the most common rodent host in relation with the abundance of the two ti...
