Remote photonic sensing of cerebral hemodynamic changes via temporal spatial analysis of acoustic vibrations.

A novel photonic method for remote monitoring of task-related hemodynamic changes in human brain activation is presented. Physiological processes associated with neural activity, such as nano-vibrations due to blood flow and tissue oxygenation in the brain, are detected by remote sensing of nano acoustic vibrations using temporal spatial analysis of defocused self-interference random patterns. Temporal nanometric changes of the speckle pattern due to visual task-induced hemodynamic responses were tracked by...

Mapping potential, existing and efficient wetlands using free remote sensing data.

Although wetlands remain threatened by human pressures and climate change, monitoring and managing them are challenging due to their high spatial and temporal dynamics within a fine-grained pattern. New satellite time-series at high temporal and spatial resolutions provide a promising opportunity to map and monitor wetlands. The objective of this study was to develop an operational method for managing valley bottom wetlands based on available free remote sensing data. The Potential, Existing, Efficient Wetl...

Importance of atmospheric transport for microplastics deposited in remote areas.

Atmospheric transport is an important pathway for the deposition of micro- and nano-plastics in remote areas. However, the sources and fate of atmospheric microplastics remain poorly understood. A study on atmospheric transport and deposition in the Pyrenean Mountains highlights the movement of microplastics away from known sources (cities, agriculture, and industry) into remote areas. Following this first evidence of atmospheric microplastic deposition in a pristine location, it is necessary to reconsider ...

Better glycemic control for hospitalized diabetic patients significantly reduces health expenditures and improves disease outcomes. We developed a dynamic dashboard with a remote management system and evaluated its impact on inpatient glycemic control. This was an observational institution-wide study; study participants were enrolled from a 1500-bed public medical center from 2016 to 2018. We evaluated the impact of a dynamic dashboard system, which analyzed and monitored all glucose data with virtual glyc...

Microvillous Inclusion Disease as a Cause of Protracted Diarrhea.

Microvillous inclusion disease (MVID), also known as congenital microvillus atrophy, was first described by Davidson et al. in 1978. Till date, only a handful of cases with MVID have been described in English literature. It is an autosomal recessive disorder with no sex predisposition and more commonly noted in countries with prevalent consanguineous marriages. These patients usually present with intractable secretory diarrhea in early days of life. The pathognomonic findings of MVID are villous atrophy alo...

Remote Intracranial Hemorrhage Secondary to Brain Tumor Surgery.

Postoperative remote intracranial hemorrhage (rICH) secondary to craniotomy surgery is an extremely rare but catastrophic complication. The present study aimed to investigate the incidence and the possible pathophysiological mechanism of rICH after brain tumor surgery. The clinical data from 9 rICH cases among 4588 patients undergoing brain tumor surgery were collected retrospectively. Remote intracranial hemorrhage occurred in 9 cases, including 6 cases of remote epidural hemorrhage (rEDH), 2 cases of remo...

Prenatal sonography of multicentric infantile myofibromatosis: Case report and review of the literature.

Scant literature exists on prenatally diagnosed infantile myofibromatosis (IM). We report a case of multicentric IM, which was first recognized as a soft-tissue paraspinal mass on prenatal sonography and subsequently characterized by MRI with pathological confirmation.

IOL-Induced Extreme Blur to Alleviate Intractable Diplopia Secondary to Dragged-Fovea Diplopia Syndrome.

A 73-year-old male presented with one year of intractable binocular diplopia and metamorphopsia in the right eye. He was unable to maintain fusion with prismatic correction, refused cosmetically noticeable forms of occlusion, and was not an occlusive contact lens candidate due to chronic neuropathy affecting his hands. The patient underwent cataract surgery with placement of a high plus intraocular lens to induce extreme blur. The uncomplicated procedure was successful in eliminating his diplopia. Cataract ...

Spinal Stimulation for the Treatment of Intractable Spine and Limb Pain: A Systematic Review of RCTs and Meta-analysis.

Propranolol suppresses infantile hemangioma cell proliferation and promotes apoptosis by upregulating miR-125b expression.

Propranolol could repress infantile hemangioma cell growth and induce apoptosis. miR-125b could inhibit cell proliferation in some tumors. However, whether propranolol exerts its proliferation inhibition and apoptosis-promoting effect by regulating the expression of miR-125b needs to be further investigated. In tumor tissue and endothelial cells isolated from infantile hemangioma patients, we found that the expression levels of miR-125b were significantly decreased. In-vitro analysis revealed that propranol...

Rural and Remote Licensed Practical Nurses' Perceptions of Working Below Their Legislated Scope of Practice.

Over the past two decades in Canada, licensed or registered practical nurses (LPNs) have experienced an extension of their educational preparation and scope of practice. Simultaneously, there has been an increase in the number of LPNs employed in rural and remote communities. These changes have influenced the practice environment and LPNs' perceptions of their work. The aim of this article is to examine what factors predict rural and remote LPNs' perceptions of working below their legislated scope of practi...

A remote sensing emissions monitoring programme reduces emissions of gasoline and LPG vehicles.

Vehicle emissions are a major source of air pollution in Hong Kong affecting human health. A 'strengthened emissions control of gasoline and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) vehicles' programme has been operating in Hong Kong since September 2014 utilising remote sensing (RS) technology. RS has provided measurement data to successfully identify high emitting gasoline and LPG vehicles which then need to be repaired or removed from the on-road vehicle fleet. This paper aims to evaluate the effectiveness of this ...

Satellite images and machine learning can identify remote communities to facilitate access to health services.

Community health systems operating in remote areas require accurate information about where people live to efficiently provide services across large regions. We sought to determine whether a machine learning analyses of satellite imagery can be used to map remote communities to facilitate service delivery and planning.

Enantioselective Desymmetrization of Prochiral Cyclopentene-1,3-diones Triggered by Remote C(sp2)-N Bond Formation.

The enantioselective desymmetrization via remote C(sp2)-H amidation of prochiral 2,2-disubstituted cyclopentene-1,3-dione with N-methoxybenzamide has been developed. The overall process was catalyzed by a chiral bifunctional thiourea catalyst through a sequential conjugate-addition-elimination-tautomerization. This strategy provides rapid access to highly functionalized five-membered carbocycles bearing an all-carbon quaternary stereogenic center through remote stereocontrol in high yields with moderate to ...

Ruthenium-catalyzed remote C5-sulfonation of N-alkyl-8-aminoquinolines.

There is an increasing demand for the methodologies of positionally selective remote C-H functionalizations. We herein report the ruthenium-catalyzed remote C5-selective sulfonation of 8-aminoquinoline derivatives. Moderate to high yields were obtained with different substituted substrates. The catalytic system exhibited a high regio-selectivity, as well as good functional group tolerance. Mechanistic study supported a radical pathway. A bifunctional ruthenium-catalytic cycle is proposed.
