Low pH treatment of starch industry effluent with bacteria from leaf debris for methane production.

Cornstarch industry generates a huge amount of acidic effluent, that is, 5-11 M /Mt grinding, with a high load of chemical oxygen demand, 6000-19000 mg/L. The acidic effluent requires neutralization making the treatment process expensive. Methanogenesis under the acidic environment (pH 5-5.5) can reduce the cost of operation as well as treatment time. This research focuses on the evaluation of the optimum condition of COD reduction and methane generation simultaneously from leaf debris sludge using Box-Be...

Investigation of toxicological effects of amorphous silica nanostructures with amine-functionalized surfaces on Vero cells.

Amorphous silica (SiO) nanostructures are described in the literature as having low toxicity and are widely used in many industrial products. However, surface modifications, such as amine-functionalization, can result in increased cytotoxicity. In this study, amorphous SiO nanostructures (SiO NS) were synthesized and amine-functionalized with two different amine molecules: primary (SiO NS@1) and tri-amine (SiO NS@3). The materials were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), zeta potential ...

Industry funding effect on positive results of probiotic use in the management of acute diarrhea: a systematized review.

Several investigations have found that industry-funded studies tend to inform results favoring the sponsored products. The pressure to demonstrate that a drug or a product causes a favorable outcome may result in investigation biases from industry-funded research. One example of this could be found in the probiotic research funded by the industry. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of industry funding on positive outcomes of the use of probiotics in the management of acute diarrhea. A systematiz...

Peptide-based therapeutics: quality specifications, regulatory considerations, and prospects.

Exquisite selectivity, remarkable efficacy, and minimal toxicity are key attributes inherently assigned to peptides, resulting in increased research interest from the pharmaceutical industry in these peptide-based therapeutics (PbT). Breaking the frontiers of cosmetology with antimicrobial peptides.

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are mostly endogenous, cationic, amphipathic polypeptides, produced by many natural sources. Recently, many biological functions beyond antimicrobial activity have been attributed to AMPs, and some of these have attracted the attention of the cosmetics industry. AMPs have revealed antioxidant, self-renewal and pro-collagen effects, which are desirable in anti-aging cosmetics. Additionally, AMPs may also be customized to act on specific cellular targets. Here, we review the rece...

Subsequently, we examined the ef...

Chinese cropping systems are a net source of greenhouse gases despite soil carbon sequestration.

Soil carbon sequestration is being considered as a potential pathway to mitigate climate change. Cropland soils could provide a sink for carbon that can be modified by farming practices, however, they can also act as a source of greenhouse gases (GHG), including not only nitrous oxide (N O) and methane (CH ), but also the upstream carbon dioxide (CO ) emissions associated with agronomic management. These latter emissions are also sometimes termed "hidden" or "embedded" CO . In this paper, we estimated the n...
