Production of liquefied fuel from depolymerization of kraft lignin over a novel modified nickel/H-beta catalyst.

In this study, a novel modified nickel/H-beta (Ni/DeAl-beta) catalyst, which has active acidic sites and hydrogen binding sites, was prepared and used to produce liquefied fuel from lignin. The bifunctional Ni/DeAl-beta catalyst efficiently converted kraft lignin into liquefied fuel due to the synergistic effect of aluminum Lewis acid sites and nickel hydrogen binding sites. At a nickel content of 0.6 mmol/g, the Ni/DeAl-beta catalyst gave a high liquid product yield of 88.6% at 300 °C for 36 h. Most...

Tendon thickening in dialysis-related joint arthritis is due to amyloid deposits at the surface of the tendon.

Beta-2 microglobulin (β2M) dialysis-related amyloidosis (DRA), a disabiliting joint disease, has been initially reported in patients under long-term dialysis. The incidence and prevalence has significantly decreased with the improvement in dialysis techniques. Here, we attempted to clarify the clinical and MRI features to improve the diagnosis.

Multiple-Partner Fertility in the United States: A Demographic Portrait.

Multiple-partner fertility (MPF) occurs when a person has biological children with more than one partner. The 2014 Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP), a nationally representative panel study of individuals and households in the United States, is the first such survey to include a direct question about whether respondents are MPF parents. Understanding the prevalence of such families is important given the known socioeconomic correlates of MPF and the ramifications of entering MPF for both ind...

Development and validation of a (RP)UHPLC-UV-(HESI/Orbitrap)MS method for the identification and quantification of mixtures of intact therapeutical monoclonal antibodies using a monolithic column.

Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) are one of the most important types of biopharmaceutics and have proved enormously successful in the treatment of cancers and autoimmune diseases. In this paper, we present a fast, straightforward reversed phase (RP)UHPLC-UV-(HESI/Orbitrap) MS method for the separation and identification of five of the most commonly used mAbs, i.e. bevazizumab (BEV), cetuximab (CTX), infliximab (INF), rituximab (RTX) and trastuzumab (TTZ) in mixtures. The RP mAbs separation was performed in a di...

Women's Autonomy and Intimate Partner Violence in Ghana.

Previous studies have established women's autonomy as an important determinant of several demographic outcomes in Sub-Saharan Africa, yet very few have considered intimate partner violence as one of these outcomes.

Use of pyrrolobenzodiazepines and related covalent-binding DNA-interactive molecules as ADC payloads: Is mechanism related to systemic toxicity?

Antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) consist of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) or antibody fragments conjugated to biologically active molecules (usually highly cytotoxic small molecules) through chemical linkers. Although no ADCs containing covalent-binding DNA-interactive payloads have yet been approved (although two containing the DNA-cleaving payload calicheamicin have), of those in clinical trials systemic toxicities are beginning to emerge. This article discusses the observed toxicities in relation to the st...

Beta oscillatory power modulation reflects the predictability of pitch change.

Humans process highly dynamic auditory information in real time, and regularities in stimuli such as speech and music can aid such processing by allowing sensory predictions for upcoming events. Auditory sequences contain information about both the identity of sounds (what) and their timing (when they occur). Temporal prediction in isochronous sequences is reflected in neural oscillatory power modulation in the beta band (∼20 Hz). Specifically, power decreases (desynchronization) after tone onset and the...

Insulin mutations impair beta-cell development in a patient-derived iPSC model of neonatal diabetes.

Insulin gene mutations are a leading cause of neonatal diabetes. They can lead to proinsulin misfolding and its retention in endoplasmic reticulum (ER). This results in increased ER-stress suggested to trigger beta-cell apoptosis. In humans, the mechanisms underlying beta-cell failure remain unclear. Here we show that misfolded proinsulin impairs developing beta-cell proliferation without increasing apoptosis. We generated induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) from people carrying insulin () mutations, eng...

Molecular cloning of porcine 2',5'-oligoadenylate synthetase-like protein and its role in porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus infection.

Porcine 2',5'-oligoadenylate synthetase-like protein is an essential antiviral protein induced by interferons; however, its bioinformatics, genetic characteristics and immunological characteristics related to porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus are still unknown. In this study, porcine 2',5'-oligoadenylate synthetase-like protein was cloned, and various attributes were predicted by bioinformatics analysis. Through RNAi depletion and overexpression methods, it was determined that porcine OASL...

Shared illness appraisal and self-efficacy among adults with type 1 diabetes.

We examined the interaction between shared illness appraisal and self-efficacy among couples in which one partner was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes ( n = 199). We hypothesized that the relation between self-efficacy and health would be weakened under conditions of shared rather than individual appraisal. Multiple regression analyses demonstrated that partner shared illness appraisal interacted with the self-efficacy of the person with type 1 diabetes to predict overall psychological distress and daily ...

Tumor Regression and Cure Depends on Sustained Th1 Responses.

While immunomodulatory monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) have therapeutic efficacy against many tumors, few patients are cured. Attempting to improve their therapeutic efficacy we have applied the TC1 mouse lung carcinoma model and injected established subcutaneous tumors intratumorally with 3 weekly doses of various combinations of mAbs. Combinations of mAbs to CTLA4/PD1/CD137 (the 3 mAb combination) and to CTLA4/PD1/CD137/CD19 (the 4 mAb combination) were most efficacious to induce complete regression of both ...

Relationship between digestive tract colonization and subsequent ventilator-associated pneumonia related to ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae.

Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is the most common ICU-acquired infection. Recently, the incidence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase producing Enterobacteriaceae (ESBLE) has substantially increased in critically ill patients. Identifying patients at risk for VAP related to ESBLE could be helpful to improve the rate of appropriate initial antibiotic treatment, and to reduce unnecessary exposure to carbapenems. The primary objective was to identify risk factors for VAP related to ESBLE. Secondary obje...

Decreased Parietal Beta Power as a Sign of Disease Progression in Patients with Mild Cognitive Impairment.

Electroencephalography (EEG) power has previously been used to compare mild cognitive impairment (MCI) patients who progress to Alzheimer's disease (pMCI) with patients with MCI who remain stable (sMCI) by using beta power. However, the beta band is very broad and smaller frequency bands may improve accuracy.

Chasing the zone: Reduced beta power predicts baseball batting performance.

Mental state prior to sports skill execution is related to subsequent performance. For example, relationships between pre-performance electroencephalogram (EEG) power and subsequent movement outcomes in golf putting, pistol shooting, and basketball free throw shooting have been previously reported. With that said, the existing body of research examining the pre-performance EEG - performance relationship has been focused on the execution of internally as opposed to externally-paced motor skills. Given that t...

Galectin-7 promotes proliferation and Th1/2 cells polarization toward Th1 in activated CD4+ T cells by inhibiting The TGFβ/Smad3 pathway.

Galectin-7 (Gal-7) has been associated with cell proliferation and apoptosis. It is known that Gal-7 antagonises TGFβ-mediated effects in hepatocytes by interacting with Smad3. Previously, we have demonstrated that Gal-7 is related to CD4+ T cells responses; nevertheless, its effect and functional mechanism on CD4+ T cells responses remain unclear. The murine CD4+ T cells were respectively cultured with Gal-7, anti-CD3/CD28 mAbs, or with anti-CD3/CD28 mAbs & Gal-7. The effects of Gal-7 on proliferation and...

Transcription Factor PU.1 Represses and Activates Gene Expression in Early T Cells by Redirecting Partner Transcription Factor Binding.

Transcription factors normally regulate gene expression through their action at sites where they bind to DNA. However, the balance of activating and repressive functions that a transcription factor can mediate is not completely understood. Here, we showed that the transcription factor PU.1 regulated gene expression in early T cell development both by recruiting partner transcription factors to its own binding sites and by depleting them from the binding sites that they preferred when PU.1 was absent. The r...
