Neural Activation in Response to the Two Sides of Emotion.

Emotions are at the core of human cognition and behavior. Traditionally, emotions have been classified dichotomously as being either positive or negative. However, recent behavioral research An et al. (2017) suggests that emotions contain both positivity and negativity. The current work investigated neural correlates of experiencing positive and negative emotions in response to happy and sad photos. Functional MRI revealed the precuneus and posterior cingulate cortex showed stronger activation when experien...

Temporal trends in dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyl concentrations in serum from the general population of Shandong Province, China: A longitudinal study from 2011 to 2017.

Temporal changes in the concentrations of dioxin-like (DL) polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in environmental and biological matrices in China are not well understood. We determined the DL-PCB concentrations in pooled serum samples from the general population of Weifang City, Shandong Province, China in 2011 (n = 305) and 2017 (n = 495). The total DL-PCB concentration was 3.48 ± 1.31 ng/g lipid (mean ± standard deviation) in 2011 and 2.82 ± 1.73 ng/g lipid (19% lower) in 2017, but ...

Ocular Toxicity Profile of ST-162 and ST-168 as Novel Bifunctional MEK/PI3K Inhibitors.

ST-162 and ST-168 are small-molecule bifunctional inhibitors of MEK and PI3K signaling pathways that are being developed as novel antitumor agents. Previous small-molecule and biologic MEK inhibitors demonstrated ocular toxicity events that were dose limiting in clinical studies. We evaluated in vitro and in vivo ocular toxicity profiles of ST-162 and ST-168.

Impact of collection programs for the generation of monocyte apheresis products on product quality and composition as starting material for the generation of cellular therapeutics.

With the discontinuation of the last generation of apheresis machines, new options for monocyte apheresis became available. As apheresis products play a crucial role in the generation of new cellular therapeutics (e.g., generation of dendritic cells [DCs] or precursor for T-cell experiments) we sought to compare two different collection programs for potential benefits or disadvantages due to different composition of the cellular products.

National surveys on 15 quality indicators for the total testing process in clinical laboratories of China from 2015 to 2017.

Background As effective quality management tools, quality indicators (QIs) are widely used in laboratory medicine. This study aimed to analyze the results of QIs, identify errors and provide quality specifications (QSs) based on the state-of-the-art. Methods Clinical laboratories all over China participated in the QIs survey organized by the National Health Commission of People' Republic of China from 2015 to 2017. Most of these QIs were selected from a common model of QIs (MQI) established by the Internati...

A Combined Computer-Aided Approach to Drive the Identification of Potential Epitopes in Protein Therapeutics.

The identification of fragment sequences, or motifs, within a therapeutic protein that may elicit an immune response when processed by T-cells can be provided by computer-aided approaches. Immunogenicity is a significant problem associated with protein therapeutics and should be investigated in the early stage of protein-based drug development to avoid treatment resistance and potentially life-threatening immune responses.

Seasonal influenza vaccine effectiveness at primary care level, Hong Kong SAR, 2017/2018 winter.

The 2017/18 winter influenza season in Hong Kong SAR started in early January 2018, predominated by influenza B/Yamagata. We collaborated with private medical practitioners of our sentinel surveillance system to collect respiratory specimens and clinical information from patients with influenza-like illness for estimation of the influenza vaccine effectiveness (VE) using the test-negative case-control design. We found that the overall VE was 59.1% (95%CI 41.1 to 71.8%) against all influenza and 53.5% (95%CI...

This review covers major achievements in clinical trials and targeted delivery...

Impact of air pollution control policies on future PM concentrations and their source contributions in China.

To investigate the impact of air pollutant control policies on future PM concentrations and their source contributions in China, we developed four future scenarios for 2030 based on a 2013 emission inventory, and conducted air quality simulations for each scenario using the chemical transport model GEOS-Chem (version 9.1.3). Two energy scenarios i.e., current legislation (CLE) and with additional measures (WAM), were developed to project future energy consumption, reflecting, respectively, existing legislat...
