Demographic and Clinical Factors Associated with Patient Adherence to Acupuncture Treatment.

Acupuncture uses needle stimulation upon the body's meridian points to alleviate physical and psychologic symptoms. In clinical practice, acupuncturists often recommend patients to attend follow-up treatment to achieve cumulative benefit over time. Adherence to acupuncture treatment was studied, and demographic and clinical factors were tested that may predict adherence.

Acute Cardiovascular Responses to a Session of Bikram Yoga: A Pilot Uncontrolled Trial.

Main cardiovascular parameters such as heart rate (HR), blood pressure, and myocardial oxygen consumption (MOC) are tightly regulated by a multifactorial, nonlinear control system. Increased HR because of physical activity is often accompanied by an increase in blood pressure. Postural changes have an effect on the baroreceptors, and stretching exercises and isometric contractions modulate muscle mechanoreceptors eliciting increases in blood pressure. However, a hot environment increases the core temperatur...

Markov Clustering Analysis-Based Validation for Traditional Chinese Medicine Syndrome Patterns of Poststroke Cognitive Impairment.

Poststroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) has constituted a heavy public health burden worldwide. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been widely used in treating PSCI. This study aimed at validating the TCM syndrome patterns of PSCI by using data mining methods. The findings will shed light on the TCM pathogenesis theory of PSCI, and thus provide translation for optimization of syndrome-targeted treatment strategies of PSCI.

A Novel Approach to Describing Traditional Chinese Medical Patterns: The "Traditional Chinese Medical Diagnostic Descriptor".

In the first of a series of three articles by the present authors, diagnostic agreement between Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioners was found to be low. This was the first time that TCM diagnoses had been evaluated with an open population of patients and this result is a cause of concern. In the second article, incorrect statistics were shown to have often been used to calculate chance-removed inter-rater agreement, and appropriate statistics such as Gwet's Agreement Coefficient 2 (AC2) was rec...
