Endoscopic Bariatric and Metabolic Therapies: Another Tool for the Management of Diabetes and Obesity.

Endoscopic bariatric and metabolic therapies (EBMTs) have sparked significant interest as minimally invasive therapeutic options for weight loss. Although bariatric surgery remains an effective option for sustained weight loss and improvement in the metabolic syndrome, access and utilization are limited. Various EBMTs have been designed to emulate the physiologic effects of established surgical interventions, including space-occupying and non-space occupying gastric therapies, gastric remodeling procedures,...

HbA predicts long-term postoperative mortality in patients with unknown glycaemic status at admission for vascular surgery - an exploratory study.

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and Diabetes mellitus (DM) represent major public health challenges and are tightly associated. To facilitate early diagnosis, HbA has been implemented as the preferred diagnostic tool for the diagnosis of type 2 DM. HbA , fasting plasma glucose (FPG) value and 2-hour post glucose load values were compared and evaluated to find which test best predicted mortality in patients with PAD.

Race and sex differences in rates of diabetic complications.

Studies on racial differences in diabetic complications are very limited. The objective of this study was to investigate the race and sex differences in diabetic complications between African Americans and whites with type 2 diabetes in Louisiana.

Ethnic disparities in relationship of obesity indices and telomere length in Asians with type 2 diabetes.

Obesity and shorter telomeres increase the risk for diabetes complications and mortality. However, the relationship of obesity and telomere length in diverse Asian population with type 2 diabetes (T2D) is not well understood. In this study, we examine the association of the baseline and changes in obesity indices, with telomere length in multi-ethnic Asian populations with T2D.

Population attributable fractions of the main type 2 diabetes risk factors in women: findings from the French E3N Cohort.

Though many type 2 diabetes (T2D) risk factors have been identified, little is known on their contributions to the diabetes burden at the population level.

Prevalence of prediabetes by the fasting plasma glucose and HbA1c screening criteria among the children and adolescents of Shenzhen, China.

Prediabetes is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases and all-cause mortality. No research in China has evaluated the prevalence of prediabetes among children and adolescents using the HbA1c criterion or the combined FPG-or-HbA1c diagnostic criterion, and researchers paid no attention to the distributions of blood glucose in Shenzhen, especially for juveniles.

Antidiabetic Medication De-Escalation following Bariatric Surgery.

Approximately 216,000 bariatric surgery (BS) procedures were performed in 2016; an increase from 158,000 in 2011. This increase may be attributable to the rising awareness of beneficial effects on health and the improving safety profile of BS. According to the National Institutes of Health consensus criteria, patients qualify for bariatric surgery if they have a body mass index (BMI) ≥35 kg/m but

Accelerated executive functions decline and gray matter structural changes in middle-aged type 1 diabetes patients with proliferative retinopathy.

The aim of this study was to determine trajectories of cognitive and cortical changes over time in middle-aged patients with type 1 diabetes and proliferative retinopathy.

Transition from hospital to outpatient diabetes care.

Diabetes affects ~9% of the US population, but accounts for 25% hospitalizations (1). Persons with diabetes have 40% higher 90-day rehospitalization rates than persons not having diabetes, with 30-day rehospitalization rates of 14.4-22.7%, 90-day rates above 26%, and 1-year rates of 30%, with evidence that there is a high-risk subset of ~10% of discharged persons with diabetes accounting for nearly two thirds of rehospitalizations (1). In a study of 124,967 persons age 50 or more hospitalized in California ...

ACP Diabetes Guidelines Turn Back the Clock, Conflating Good HbA1c with Hypoglycemia.

The Clinical Guidelines Committee of the American College of Physicians (ACP) recently released the following Guidance Statements, "Clinicians should aim to achieve anHbA1c level between 7% and 8% in most patients with type 2diabetes," and "Clinicians should consider deintensifying pharmacologic therapy in patients with type 2 diabetes whoachieve HbA1c levels less than 6.5%"( ).

Erratum.

The use of an injection port is helpful in improving metabolic control and compliance to a strict basal-bolus regimen in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes.

Basal-bolus regimen is the best treatment for children with type 1 diabetes (T1D), but requires several insulin injections a day. In fact, the body's physical growth, the management of frequent snacks and mistakes in carb-counting and in insulin boluses require the ability to promptly adapt insulin scheme.

The changing environment of hyperglycaemia in pregnancy: Gestational diabetes and diabetes mellitus in pregnancy.

Gestational diabetes (GDM) diagnosis and treatment has been in as state of flux since the World Health Organization accepted and ratified the new criteria in 2010. These new diagnostic criteria, identify an increasing number of women at risk from hyperglycemia in pregnancy (HGiP). Maternal hyperglycemia represents a significant risk to mother and fetus, both in the short and long term.
