Rhodiola crenulata, a traditional Tibetan medicine, has shown promise in the treatment of hypobaric hypoxia (HH)-induced brain injury. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study investigated the protective effects of R. crenulata aqueous extract (RCAE) on HH-induced brain injury in rats.
Paeoniflorin (PF) exerts a significant protective effect against neurotoxicity and mitochondrial damage in neurons. However, the mechanisms underlying PF-mediated rescue remain elusive. Therefore, we endeavored to further research the molecular mechanisms underlying PF-mediated inhibition of tributyltin chloride (TBTC)-induced apoptosis of neurons.
Korean Red ginseng extract (RG) is one of the most widely used traditional health functional food in Asia, which invigorates immunity and vital energy. RG have been suggested to inhibit proliferation, invasion, and inflammation in several cancer cell lines. Correspondingly, clinical studies have raised the possibility that RG could augment therapeutic efficacy in cancer patients. However, little is known about the anti-cancer effects of RG in glioblastoma (GBM), the most common and aggressive brain tumor fo...
Leaves and twigs from Phyllanthus muellerianus Kuntze Excell are known to exert anti-inflammatory and antipyretic properties as well as wound healing properties. During a wide screening for human hyaluronidase-1 inhibitors from natural sources leaf extracts from P. muellerianus turned out to show basic anti-hyaluronidase activity. A detailed investigation of this effect should rationalize the potential anti-inflammatory activity of the extract for improved wound healing.
Lycium barbarum L. (also known as "Goji berry"), a traditional Chinese herbal medicine, has been a common herb in the traditional Chinese pharmacopoeia for centuries. The main active component is the Lycium barbarum polysaccharides and its antioxidative effect has been widely shown to provide neuroprotection to the eye, and it would, therefore, be interesting to determine if Lycium barbarum help delay vision deterioration in patients with retinitis pigmentosa.
Licorice and Yuanhua are both famous herbs in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and their combination is used by some TCM doctors to treat renal and gastrointestinal diseases as well as tumors. On the other hand, the compatibility theory of TCM warns that toxic effects might be triggered by Licorice-Yuanhua combination. The usability of Licorice-Yuanhua combination has long been controversial due to lack of evidence and mechanism illustration. Colonic hydrogen sulfide (HS) metabolism imbalance is closely ...
Smilax glabra Roxb. (SG), a Chinese medicinal herb which called "tufuling", is believed to be effective in treating hyperuricemia and gout symptoms. But the active substance and pharmacological mechanism of reducing uric acid remain unknown. This study aimed to obtain the total flavonoids including four astilbin stereoisomers and to examine their effects on reducing uric acid content in hyperuricemic mice.
Liuwei Dihuang decoction (LW), a classic formula in Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has been used for nearly one thousand years for various diseases with characteristic features of kidney yin deficiency. LW consists of 6 herbs including Dihuang (prepared root of Rehmannia glutinosa (Gaertn.) DC.), Shanyao (rhizome of Dioscorea polystachya Turcz.), Shanzhuyu (fruit of Cornus officinalis Siebold & Zucc.), Mudanpi (root bark of Paeonia × suffruticosa Andrews), Zexie (rhizome of Alisma plantago-aquatica L....
Cynometra cauliflora Linn. belongs to the Fabaceae family and is known locally in Malaysia as nam-nam. Traditionally, a decoction of the C. cauliflora leaves is used for treating hyperlipidemia and diabetes.
Qiwei Tiexie capsule (QWTX) is a representative prescription of Tibetan medicine, which is widely used for long-term treatment of chronic liver disease and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
According to traditional Korean medicine theory in which children's growth retardation is attributed to blood deficiency, Siwu decoction (SWD), a representative treatment for blood deficiency, was chosen as a sample.
Leaves of Croton linearis, known as "rosemary", are widely used in folk medicine in Caribbean countries to treat fever and colds (associated to infections).
Paullinia pinnata L. (Sapindaceae) is an African woody vine, traditionally used for the treatment of itch and pain-related conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis.
Korean red ginseng (KRG) has been traditionally used to treat diabetes. Ginsenosides are considered as the major bioactive components mediating anti-diabetic effects of KRG. However, considering that ginsenosides account for only about 3-4% of ginsengs, other fractions of KRG may also carry potential anti-diabetic effects. There is no study reporting the differentiated effects of ginsenosides (Spn) and non-saponin fractions (NSpn) of KRG on glucose control.
Curcuma wenyujin Y.H.(CW)，a variety to Curcumae Rhizoma, documented in China Pharmacopeia, has long been used as plant medicine for its traditional effect on promoting Qi, activating blood stagnation and expelling blood stasis. Nowadays, it is often used in clinic for extraordinary effect on liver diseases. It is worthy to note that CW processed with vinegar has been applied in clinic for 1500 years started in the northern and southern dynasties. In our previous research, both CW and vinegar processed CW ...
