Relationship between cerebral microbleeds and white matter MR hyperintensities in systemic lupus erythematosus: a retrospective observational study.

White matter hyperintensities (WMH) and cerebral microbleeds (CMBs) are known to be associated with small vessel diseases (SVD) and neuroinflammation. The purpose was to investigate the relationship between CMBs and WMH in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).

Comparability of semiautomatic tortuosity measurements in the carotid artery.

Increased arterial tortuosity has been suggested as a predisposing factor for carotid artery dissection, which is an important risk factor for development of extracranial carotid artery aneurysms (ECAA). Prior to comparison with non-ECAA controls, the optimal measurement technique should be defined. This study describes the difference between software packages in terms of reproducibility and absolute outcome of arterial tortuosity measurements in ECAA patients.

Use of microcatheters for suction thrombectomy of acute distal occlusions.

We report our initial experience of using a microcatheter for contact aspiration of acute distal occlusions for recanalization. Endovascular technique and a case using Excelsior XT-27 microcatheter are presented. After manual suction within distal middle cerebral artery segments using a 50-ml syringe, instant and complete recanalization was obtained. Microcatheter suction thrombectomy using a 50-ml syringe can be considered a feasible treatment option for acute distal small artery occlusions.
