Comparison of efficacy, adverse effects and costs between 20% ALA-PDT and 10% ALA-PDT for the treatment of actinic keratosis in Chinese patients.

5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA)-mediated photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a reliable treatment for actinic keratosis (AK), and the concentration of ALA for this treatment is 20% in most studies, but it was found that 10% ALA could achieve similar outcome during clinical practice while reducing the costs. However, there are limited reports comparing the efficacy and the safety of 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA)-mediated photodynamic therapy (PDT) with different ALA doses.

The aim of this study was to investigate the role of polymeric gold-photoactive nanoparticles (PGPNPs) conjugated with folic acid (FA) as theranostic nanoparticles for active targeting, real-time fluorescence tracing and radiosensitivity inducing in LNCaP prostate cancer cells.

Use of dermograph for improvement of PpIX precursor's delivery in Photodynamic Therapy: experimental and clinical pilot studies.

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is an alternative treatment for non-melanoma skin cancer. One of the main challenges of topical PDT is to increase the precursor penetration when applied on the lesion. Protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) is an endogenous photosensitizer (PS) widely used, obtained by the administration of precursors such as aminolevulinic acid and methyl aminolevulinate. Aiming for the technique improvement by providing greater PS penetration in skin lesions, we tested a new approach for drug delivery with a...

Photodynamic therapy inhibits cell growth and enhances the histone deacetylase-mediated viability impairment in Cryptococcus spp. in vitro.

Cryptococcosis is a disseminated infection caused mainly by C. neoformans and C. gattii. Limitations for the treatment involve the selection of isolates resistant to conventional antifungal drugs, prolonged treatment time and drugs side effects. This study evaluated the combined effect of histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACi) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) on the growth of C. neoformans and C. gattii in vitro. Results showed that PDT inhibited yeasts proliferation and enhanced the HDACi-mediated cell viabi...

Desmoplastic neurotropic melanoma of the buccal sulcus invading the inferior alveolar nerve subjected to interstitial photodynamic therapy.

Detection of hemophilia by fluorescence spectroscopy: A photodiagnosis approach.

Hemophilia (HP), the deficiency of clotting factors such as VIII (FVIII) and IX, is an inherited blood disorder which is due to the lack of clotting protein. Conventional techniques for detecting hemophilia are based on clotting factor tests such as hemostasis assays to determine various types of hemophilia and its severity. In the current study, we propose a new approach involving a spectral technique to discriminate normal controls from hemophilia patients with an accuracy above 80%. This accuracy is calc...

Investigating the mechanisms behind extensive cell death in human cancer cells following nanoparticle assisted photo-thermo-radiotherapy.

We have recently reported the synthesis and characterization of gold-coated iron oxide nanoparticle and demonstrated such a nanoparticle (Au@FeO NP) was able to significantly enhance the lethal effects of photo-thermo-radiotherapy. The purpose of this study was to determine the mechanisms behind such an enhancement by investigating the changes induced in cancer cell viability, proliferation, and morphology as well as monitoring the alteration of some genes which play important role in the process of cell de...

The Combination of Photodynamic Therapy and Fractional CO2 Laser for Oral Leukoplakia: Case Series.

Oral leukoplakia (OL), a predominantly white change to the oral mucosa, is the most common potentially malignant lesion. Elimination of this condition, especially the high risk OL, is advisable, even necessary as an attempt to avoid malignant transformation. Here we presented three cases of OL successfully treated by photodynamic therapy (PDT) following pretreatment with CO laser. After a series of one to three sessions the patients were monitored for 12 months. All the lesions showed completed remission, b...

Energy analysis of PDT using thermography during the treatment of basal cell carcinoma.

The changes in tissue temperature of basal cell carcinoma lesions were investigated during photodynamic therapy in order to better understand the effects and mechanisms of PDT in tissue. In this study, the monitoring of 40 lesions of basal cell carcinoma was performed during photodynamic therapy. The lesion region becomes thermally evident throughout the procedure, and there is an improved contrast of the lesion edges after the end of the irradiation. The comparison between thermal and fluorescence images s...

The role of ABCG2 in modulating responses to anti-cancer photodynamic therapy.

The ATP-binding cassette (ABC) superfamily G member 2 (ABCG2) transmembrane protein transporter is known for conferring resistance to treatment in cancers. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a promising anti-cancer method involving the use of light-activated photosensitisers to precisely induce oxidative stress and cell death in cancers. ABCG2 can efflux photosensitisers from out of cells, reducing the capacity of PDT and limiting the efficacy of treatment. Many studies have attempted to elucidate the relationsh...

Antibacterial Photodynamic Therapy Mediated by 5-aminolevulinic acid on methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

In recent years, the emergence of drug-resistant bacteria, such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), has brought great difficulties to clinical treatment. Antibacterial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) is a new non-antibiotic treatment strategy for a variety of drug-resistant bacteria. However, there are few studies on the antimicrobial mechanism of aPDT mediated by 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA-PDT) for MRSA. In this study, we observed the bactericidal effect of ALA-PDT on MRSA. We found that ALA...

Newly formulated 5% 5-aminolevulinic acid phototherapy on Candida albicans.
