Learning curves: historical trends of FDA-reported adverse events for dermal fillers.

Dermal fillers are medical devices regulated by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA); therefore, reported adverse events (AEs) are publicly available via OpenFDA. Evaluation of historical AE data trends may help distinguish between AEs related to expected learning curves associated with a new type of filler from AEs related to inherent characteristics of a product. In this study, the full history of AE data was evaluated to establish reproducible learning curves for FDA-approved dermal fillers. Reactio...

Anatomical Variations in the Course of Labial Arteries: A Literature Review.

Nonsurgical lip enhancement using dermal fillers is a very popular procedure. The trend of enlarged lips has been popularised by media and social media. The lips have considerable aesthetic and functional importance, in addition to having a complex anatomy. Serious complications including vascular compromise or occlusion leading to cutaneous necrosis and blindness can occur as the result of lip enhancement using dermal fillers. Therefore, aesthetic practitioners require an in-depth understanding of the anat...

The Australian Sentinel Practices Research Network, 1 January to 31 March 2017.

The Australian Sentinel Practices Research Network was established in 1991 to provide a rapid, national, monitoring scheme for infectious diseases that can alert public health officials of epidemics before they arise. The network consists of general practitioners, throughout all 8 states and territories in Australia, who report presentations on a number of defined medical conditions each week. This report presents data from the 1st quarter of 2017 (1 January to 31 March) and includes the syndromic surveilla...

Carcinogenicity of glyphosate: why is New Zealand's EPA lost in the weeds?

In 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) concluded that glyphosate is "probably carcinogenic to humans". The New Zealand Environmental Protection Authority (NZEPA) rejected this and commissioned a new report, concluding that glyphosate was unlikely to be genotoxic or carcinogenic to humans. The NZEPA has argued that the difference arose because IARC is a "hazard-identification authority", whereas NZEPA is a "regulatory body that needs to cast the net more widely". We conclude that the...

An adverse reaction after hyaluronic acid filler application: a case report.

Among several skin fillers developed in recent decades, hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers have become the material of choice. They are safe, long-lasting, not immunogenic, and cost effective, and they can be removed with hyaluronidase. Unfortunately, early and delayed complications can also occur following HA filler injection. Here we report the case of a hyaluronic filler-related complication in a 50-year-old female patient. The locations affected were the forehead, glabella, and nose. Three days after HA fille...

Genetic diversity of porcine circovirus type 2 in China between 1999-2017.

Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV-2), is linked to PCV-2 associated disease, which has caused considerable economic loss in the swine industry. Here, we report the genetic diversity of PCV-2 in China. A total of 74 Chinese PCV-2 strains sequenced between 1999 and 2017 were studied. Based on the ORF2 and complete genomes, we found that apart from the PCV-2a, PCV-2b, and PCV-2d genotypes, two unstable recombination genotypes also exist, referred to as IM1 and IM2 genotypes. We found that the patterns of PCV-2 ge...

Acquired partial lipodystrophy treated with poly-L-lactic acid and hyaluronic acid fillers: a case report.

Acquired partial lipodystrophy (APL), also known as Barraquer-Simons syndrome, is a rare disorder characterized by progressive fat loss in the upper body. Use of poly-L-lactic acid and hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers for the treatment of APL is neither approved by the Food and Drug Administration nor described in the literature. Herein, we describe a case of APL that achieved significant improvement in facial volume following treatment with combination poly-L-lactic acid and HA fillers.

Brief Report: "Um" Fillers Distinguish Children With and Without ASD.

Two laboratories have reported that children with ASD are less likely than their typical peers to fill pauses with um but their use of uh is unaffected (Irvine et al., J Autism Dev Disord 46(3):1061-1070, 2016; Gorman et al., Autism Res 9(8):854-865, 2016). In this brief report, we replicated this finding by comparing the discourse of 7-to-15-year-olds with ASD (N = 31) to that of their typically developing same-age peers (N = 32). The robustness of this easily documented difference in discourse sug...

The Fight Against Antimicrobial Resistance Is Confounded by a Global Increase in Antibiotic Usage.

Antimicrobial resistance is a serious threat to global health. Despite numerous initiatives designed to curb excessive and inappropriate use of antibiotics, a recent report ( Klein et al. ( 2018 ) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U. S. A. , 115 , E3463 ) finds that there was a substantial increase in global antibiotic consumption by humans from 2000 to 2015 and predicts a further 200% increase by 2030. Alarmingly, much of this growth is occurring in "last-resort" antibiotics. The study excludes the extensive use of a...

Nodule Formation Following Treatment With Hyaluronic Acid Fillers: A Report of Two Challenging Cases.

Nodule formation can be a potentially disfiguring adverse event of soft tissue fillers. Limited treatment consensus exists regarding the optimal approach for addressing recurrent and persistent nodules. Here we describe two challenging cases of nodules that developed following injection with Restylane and Juvéderm Voluma. We review suspected pathophysiology and discuss our treatment approach. J Drugs Dermatol. 2018;17(5):580-581.

Durability, Behavior, and Tolerability of 5 Hyaluronidase Products.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal fillers are commonly used in cosmetic dermatology. Due to differences in their physical characteristics, HA fillers demonstrate different sensitivity to degradation by hyaluronidase (Hase) because of HA concentration and differences in cross-linking. Similarly, there are differences in the activity of Hase products depending on source and concentration.

Conflict-of-Interest Disclosures to The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery: The Relevance of Industry-Reported Payments.

Academic journals such as The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery (JBJS) require disclosures of financial relationships that authors report as potential conflicts of interest. Because industry payments can take various forms, including food and beverage, consulting, or research payments, the purpose of this study was to determine which categories of industry-reported payments were most frequently considered by authors as irrelevant to their specific publication, and therefore not included in their journal discl...
