Topoisomerase inhibitors: pharmacology and emerging nanoscale delivery systems.

Topoisomerase enzymes have shown unique roles in replication and transcription. These enzymes which were initially found in Escherichia coli have attracted considerable attention as target molecules for cancer therapy. Nowadays, there are several topoisomerase inhibitors in the market to treat or at least control the progression of cancer. However, significant toxicity, low solubility and poor pharmacokinetic properties have limited their wide application and these characteristics need to be improved. Nano-...

Tobacco Product Use and Cessation Indicators Among Adults - United States, 2018.

Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable disease and death in the United States (1). The prevalence of adult cigarette smoking has declined in recent years to 14.0% in 2017 (2). However, an array of new tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, has entered the U.S. market (3). To assess recent national estimates of tobacco product use among U.S. adults aged ≥18 years, CDC, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the National Cancer Institute analyzed data from the 2018 National Health Int...

Variation trends and principal component analysis of nitrogen oxide emissions from motor vehicles in Wuhan City from 2012 to 2017.

In addition to fine particulate matter and oxysulfides, nitrogen oxides (NO) emitted by motor vehicles are among the most important pollutants affecting air quality and public health in those urban areas where centralized heating and chemical industry absent. We utilized correlation analysis (pearson correlation coefficient and spearman correlation coefficient) and principal component analysis (PCA) to identify the variation trends and main causes of NO emissions from motor vehicles in Wuhan City. We consid...

Scarcity or luxury: Which leads to adolescent greed? Evidence from a large-scale Chinese adolescent sample.

Because greed is associated with various destructive outcomes, understanding the developmental precursors to dispositional greed in adolescence is of great importance. However, there are few empirical studies on this topic. The current study aimed to examine the relationship between childhood socioeconomic status (CSES) and adolescent greed and the moderating effect of family size. Two competing hypotheses were proposed. One is the scarcity hypothesis, which claims that CSES may be negatively related to ado...

Commentary health risks from climate fix: The downside of energy storage batteries.

Energy storage is the key component to almost all technologies arising in response to climate change. Although most lead batteries are recycled, the process as employed in the majority of recycling plants around the world is highly polluting. Lithium ion batteries, considered the most advanced battery for climate solutions, are employed in electric vehicles, solar lanterns, and increasingly in other energy storage applications. These are generally not being recycled as there are no available technologies to...

A glance over doxorubicin based-nanotherapeutics: From proof-of-concept studies to solutions in the market.

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide and, as such, efforts are being done to find new chemotherapeutic drugs or, alternatively, novel approaches for the delivery of old ones. In this scope, when used as vehicles for drugs, nanomaterials may potentially maximize the efficacy of the treatment and reduce its side effects, for example by a change in drug's pharmacokinetics, cell targeting and/or specific stimuli responsiveness. This is the case of doxorubicin (DOX) that presents a broad spectr...

Autonomous Vehicles and Public Health.

Autonomous vehicles (AVs) have the potential to shape urban life and significantly modify travel behaviors. "Autonomous technology" means technology that can drive a vehicle without active physical control or monitoring by a human operator. The first AV fleets are already in service in US cities. AVs offer a variety of automation, vehicle ownership, and vehicle use options. AVs could increase some health risks (such as air pollution, noise, and sedentarism); however, if proper regulated, AVs will likely red...

When the market drives you crazy: Stock market returns and fatal car accidents.

This paper provides evidence that daily fluctuations in the stock market have important - and hitherto neglected - spillover effects on fatal car accidents. Using the universe of fatal car accidents in the United States from 1990 to 2015, we find that a one standard deviation reduction in daily stock market returns is associated with a 0.6% increase in fatal car accidents that happen after the stock market opening. A battery of falsification tests supports a causal interpretation of this finding. Our result...

Chemistry, metabolism and pharmacology of carcinogenic alkaloids present in areca nut and factors affecting their concentration.

Areca Nut (AN), the seed of tropical palm tree Areca catechu, is a widely chewed natural product with estimated 600 million users across the world. Various AN products, thriving in the market, portray 'Areca nut' or 'Supari' as mouth freshener and safe alternative to smokeless tobacco. Unfortunately, AN is identified as a Group 1 human carcinogen by International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). Wide variation in the level of alkaloids, broadly ranging from 2 to 10 mg/gm dry weight, is observed in dive...

"Beasts"-New Zealand's utility vehicles: their climate change emissions and macho marketing.

Vehicle emissions are an important contributor to the growth of greenhouse gas emissions in New Zealand. Here we explore the role of sports utility vehicles (SUVs) and light utility vehicles (utes) in this problem. Marketed as macho symbols of toughness and dominance, often through comparisons with savage predators, these vehicles are promoted largely to male consumers. Eight out of 10 of the highest-selling new light vehicles in 2018 were SUVs or diesel-powered utes, with the latter standing out as the hea...

Genome-edited plants in the field.

The application of site directed nucleases (SDN) for Genome Editing (GE) in plant breeding and research increases exponentially in the last few years. The main research so far was on 'proof of concept' studies or improvement of the precision and delivery of the SDN. Nevertheless, a reasonable amount of research is present on market-oriented applications for cash crops such as rice but also for commercially lesser interesting crops and vegetables. Reported field trials involving GE plants are scarce around t...
