Characterization of the Plastic Scintillation Detector Exradin W2 for Small Field Dosimetry.

Small field dosimetry has been an active area of research for over a decade. It is now known that large dosimetric errors can be introduced if proper detectors or correction factors are not used. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) through the technical report series No. 483 provides guidelines for small field dosimetry procedures as well as correction factors for most detectors available in the market. The plastic scintillator detector (PSD) Exradin W1 has been found to have a correction factor c...

Metallosis following a clip breakage in a total knee arthroplasty implant: A case report.

Metallosis describes the build-up of metal debris in the soft tissues after a period of metal on metal articulation. This debris can be asymptomatic or lead to catastrophic implant failure, which can present acutely, as in this case, or over a period of time. This report highlights how a metal clip used to hold the polyethylene liner to the tibial base plate broke 5 years after implantation, dislodged from its original position and went on to cause post-operative knee metallosis.

Metal implants and airport security checks.

Orthopaedic surgeons and trauma surgeons in the Netherlands are implanting 65,000 joint replacements and treating nearly 300,000 fractures per year. For many travellers with a metal implant - but also for the physicians who are treating them - it is unclear what the consequences will be when they have to go through airport security checks. These checks follow a fixed procedure in accordance with European rules which involves travellers passing through a number of visible and invisible barriers. The first ba...

Back from the Dead. ACA Exchange Market Looking Healthy, Hale, and Competitive.

The brighter outlook for 2019 is what happens when the learning curve starts to flatten out. Remember, this market has only existed for five years. Margins over the past six months have exceeded even pre-ACA levels, and loss ratios reached new lows in the second quarter of 2018.

A high dynamic range optical detector for measuring single photons and bright light.

Detecting light is fundamental to all optical experiments and applications. At the single photon level, the quantized nature of light requires specialised detectors, which typically saturate when more than one photon is incident. Here, we report on a massively-multiplexed single-photon detector, which exploits the saturation regime of a single click detector to exhibit a dynamic range of 123 dB, enabling measurement from optical energies as low as 10 photons per pulse to ∼ 2.5 × 10photons per pulse. This...

The aim of this study was to investigate the impact on metal artifacts and dose efficiency of using a tin filter in combination with high-energy threshold (TH) images of a photon-counting detector (PCD) computed tomography (CT) system.

Iridium(III)-based chemosensors for the detection of metal ions.

In recent years, transition metal complexes with their prominent photophysical properties have emerged as versatile chemosensors to probe different target analytes, including metal ions. By incorporating specific metal ion receptors, various iridium(III) complex-based cation sensors have been developed using different mechanisms. In this review, we survey examples of iridium(III) complex-based metal ion chemosensors that have been reported in the literature. Their design, mechanism and outlook will also be ...

Patient versus proxy response on global health scales: no meaningful DIFference.

Assessment of outcomes from a proxy is often substituted for the patient's self-report when the patient is unable or unwilling to report their status. Research has indicated that proxies over-report symptoms on the patient's behalf. This study aimed to quantify the extent of proxy-introduced bias on the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System Global Health (PROMIS GH) scale for mental (GMH) and physical (GPH) scores.

Activation of metal oxo and nitrido complexes by Lewis acids.

Metal oxo species play key roles as oxidants in chemical and biological systems. Although Brønsted acids have long been known to enhance the oxidizing power of metal oxo complexes, the use of Lewis acids (LA), such as metal ions, to activate these complexes has received much less attention until recently. The report of the presence of a Mn4CaO5 cluster active site in the oxygen-evolving center (OEC) of photosystem II (PS II) in 2004 has stimulated intense interest in understanding the interaction of Lewis ...

Measurement properties of self-report questionnaires on health-related quality of life and functional health status in dysphonia: a systematic review using the COSMIN taxonomy.

The current review was conducted to identify all self-report questionnaires on functional health status (FHS) and/or health-related quality-of-life (HR-QoL) in adult populations with dysphonia (voice problems), and to evaluate the psychometric properties of the retrieved questionnaires.

Morning report innovation: Case Oriented Report and Exam Skills.

Morning report is a valuable educational conference but is often a stand-alone classroom-based discussion which misses the opportunity for bedside education. In this report, we describe an innovative morning report structure - the Case Oriented Report and Exam Skills (CORES) - that addresses this pitfall of the traditional case conference format and brings learners to the bedside. The key components of CORES include highlighting concepts of clinical reasoning, emphasizing evidence-based and hypothesis-drive...

Development of the Environmental Radiation Survey Program and Its Application to In Situ Gamma-Ray Spectrometry.

An environmental radiation survey using a gamma-ray spectrometer is used to rapidly detect radioactive contamination over a wide area of ground that was released from nuclear events. For the successful application of a gamma-ray spectrometer to the calculation of the radioactivity concentration in the ground and the dose rate at 1 m above the ground, it is necessary to build a calibration procedure to obtain the counting efficiency at the in situ measurement, which means in situ calibration factor to report...

Differential Metal Ion Sensing by an Antipyrine Derivative in Aqueous and β-Cyclodextrin Media: Selectivity Tuning by β-Cyclodextrin.

β-Cyclodextrin (β-CD) is a nontoxic cyclic oligosachcharide that can encapsulate all or part of organic molecules of appropriate size and specific shape through noncovalent interaction. Herein, we report the influence of β-CD complex formation of an antipyrine derivative on its metal ion sensing behavior. In aqueous solution, the antipyrine shows a turn-on fluorescence sensing of vanadyl ion, and in cyclodextrin medium it senses aluminum ion. The compound shows an unusual fluorescence quenching on bindin...

Novel Rescue Strategy for Endotracheal Intubation Through Severe Subglottic Stenosis by Using a Metal Suction Tube as a Tube Stylet in a Neonate: A Case Report.

We report a novel technique for the management of subglottic stenosis in a neonate. The initial endotracheal intubation did not provide adequate mechanical ventilation due to a significant air leak. We then performed suspension laryngoscopy and used a metal suction tube as an intubating stylet. We successfully inserted an endotracheal tube deep enough to maintain adequate mechanical ventilation. This technique is a viable rescue strategy in this clinical scenario.

Observation of ϒ(4S)→η^{'}ϒ(1S).

We report the first observation of the hadronic transition ϒ(4S)→η^{'}ϒ(1S), using 496  fb^{-1} data collected at the ϒ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^{+}e^{-} collider. We reconstruct the η^{'} meson through its decays to ρ^{0}γ and to π^{+}π^{-}η, with η→γγ. We measure B(ϒ(4S)→η^{'}ϒ(1S))=[3.43±0.88(stat)±0.21(syst)]×10^{-5}, with a significance of 5.7σ.

Dynamics of metal ions around an RNA molecule.

Noncoding RNA molecules take part in many biological processes, while metal ions play crucial roles in helping RNAs to perform their functions. However, the statics and dynamics of these metal ions around RNA molecules are still not well understood. In this work, we report a detailed molecular dynamics study of the type-I preQ_{1}-bound riboswitch aptamer domain (PRAD) at different ionic conditions (K^{+}, Na^{+}, and Mg^{2+}). The results show that the structural properties and flexibility of the PRAD mole...
