This paper spotlights human capital management, digital technology, and costs control as issues that healthcare leaders will face in redesigning the health care ecosystem in the 21st century.
Most hospitals outsource supply procurement to purchasing alliances, or group purchasing organizations (GPOs). Despite their early 20th century origin, we lack both national and trend data on alliance utilization, services, and performance. The topic is important as alliances help hospitals control costs, enjoy tailwinds from affiliated regional/local alliances, and face headwinds from hospital self-contracting and criticism of certain business practices.
This article gives, first, a historical account of the action of capital in healthcare in contemporary Brazil and then introduces a debate on the dominance of finance ('financial dominance') in healthcare based on one case to examine: the hypertrophy of the structure for intermediation in private healthcare existing in Brazil, using the theses of José Carlos de Souza Braga as its principal reference. The article highlights the nebulous nature of what happens at the interface between the public and private ...
Human health is dependent upon environmental health. Air pollution is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality globally, and climate change has been identified as the single greatest public health threat of the 21st century. As a large, resource-intensive sector of the Canadian economy, healthcare itself contributes to pollutant emissions, both directly from facility and vehicle emissions and indirectly through the purchase of emissions-intensive goods and services. Together these are termed life cycle em...
This old standby's ultimate demise will likely take place when cervical cancer incidence declines as the HPV vaccine starts to take effect at a population level. New guidelines are being written, but insurers could have a major influence on how closely those guidelines are followed. So far, though, they haven't waded very far into the Pap-HPV debate.
Phrenology was a nineteenth century endeavour to link personality traits with scalp morphology, which has been both influential and fiercely criticised, not least because of the assumption that scalp morphology can be informative of underlying brain function. Here we test the idea empirically rather than dismissing it out of hand. Whereas nineteenth century phrenologists had access to coarse measurement tools (digital technology referring then to fingers), we were able to re-examine phrenology using 21st ce...
Tetracycline hydrochloride (TH), indomethacin (IM), and bezafibrate (BF) belong to the three different important classes of pharmaceuticals, which are well known for their toxicity and environmental concerns. However, studies are still elusive to highlight the mechanistic toxicity of these pharmaceuticals and rank them using both, the toxicity prediction and confirmation approaches. Therefore, we employed the next generation toxicity testing in 21st century (TOX21) tools and estimated the in vitro/vivo toxi...
While federal regulation provides patients the right to access their electronic health records and promotes increased use of health information technology, patient access to electronic health records remains limited. The 21st Century Cures Act, signed into law over a year ago, has important provisions that could significantly improve access and availability of health data. Specifically, the provisions call for partnerships among health information exchange networks, educational and research initiatives, and...

The field of couple therapy-one of the most widely sought and practiced modality of therapy-has been revolutionized by the emergence of attachment science in the 21st century. We now understand not only the centrality of close relationships for human health and wellbeing, but also that the key to a healthy happy relationship is a secure attachment bond. Emotionally Focused Therapy is an attachment-based approach that aims to help couples create a secure attachment bond. Several outcome studies have shown th...
Modern electroanalytical chemistry, based on an intimate coupling of electrochemical techniques and spectroscopic and imaging methodologies, contains a broad range of very powerful research tools that are invariably characterized by descriptors of in-situ, in-vivo, real-time, on-line, etc. This article offers a perspective, from the viewpoint of the authors, on part of the grand challenges facing human society and our planet in the 21st century, where contemporary analysts, armed with modern electroanalytic...
The removal efficiency of pharmaceuticals in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is variable and some of these compounds pass these plants almost intact and others presenting a removal efficiency close to 100%. Their incomplete removal results in a continuous discharge of pharmaceuticals into the environment. To assess the profile of contamination of influents and effluents over a day, a set of 83 pharmaceuticals were evaluated hourly in a WWTP in Leiria, Portugal. The composite samples of the influent and ...
NASN's Framework for 21st Century School Nursing Practice™ (the Framework) provides a graphic illustration of the key principles of professional school nursing practice, reflects NASN's stance for evidence-based best practice and provides a focus when prioritizing school nursing activity. In order to ensure fidelity of the Framework and to provide professional development for school nurses, NASN is embarking on an exciting new project: Focus on the Framework, a series of five Continuing Nursing Education ...
Regular sediment inputs are required for deltas to maintain their surface elevation relative to sea level, which is important for avoiding salinization, erosion, and flooding. However, fluvial sediment inputs to deltas are being threatened by changes in upstream catchments due to climate and land use change and, particularly, reservoir construction. In this research, the global hydrogeomorphic model WBMsed is used to project and contrast 'pristine' (no anthropogenic impacts) and 'recent' historical fluvial ...
We analyze the earnings penalty of smoking among Swedish twins in two social contexts: the 1970s, when smoking was common and widely accepted and when there were relatively few tobacco laws aiming to reduce smoking; and the 2000s, when smoking had become more expensive, stigmatizing and less common, and when tobacco laws and regulations had intensified. The results show that the short-term earnings penalty of smoking was much higher in the 21st century than in the 1970s for men. For women, smokers had on av...
