Sex-based income disparities are well documented in medicine and most pronounced in surgery. These disparities are commonly attributed to differences in hours worked. One proposed solution to close the earnings gap is a fee-for-service payment system, which is theoretically free of bias. However, it is unclear whether a sex-based earnings gap persists in a fee-for-service system when earnings are measured on the basis of hours worked.
Specifying the association between childhood behaviors and adult earnings can inform the development of screening tools and preventive interventions to enhance social integration and economic participation.
This paper examines the relationship between body composition and earnings in a developing country setting. We use body mass index, waist circumference and hip circumference. Exploiting the panel structure of our longitudinal survey, we find that along with BMI, waist circumference is related to higher earnings in Indonesia.
Digital therapeutics is an evidence-based intervention using high-quality software, with the sole purpose of treatment. As many healthcare systems are encountering high demands of quality outcomes, the need for digital therapeutics is gradually increasing in the clinical field. We conducted review of the implications of digital therapeutics in the treatment of neurological deficits for stroke patients. The implications of digital therapeutics have been discussed in four domains: cognition, speech and aphasi...
This study had two objectives: (1) to determine if, in the United States of America (US), the proportion of non-US citizen international medical graduates (non-US IMGs) entering pathology residencies had increased (again) in 2019 and (2) to assess how this multi-year trend might impact transfusion medicine in the US.

The United States spends more per capita on prescription drugs than do other high-income countries (1). In 2017, patients paid 14% of this cost out of pocket (2). Prescription drug cost-saving strategies, including nonadherence to medications due to cost concerns, have been documented among U.S. adults (3) and can negatively affect morbidity and, in the case of persons with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, can increase transmission risk (4,5). However, population-based data on prescription drug...
We would like to make a few comments on the results reported in a recent paper in this journal by Tsuneda, J. Comput. Chem, 2019, 40, 206. The structures of some pure silver clusters were not correctly assigned. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
The progression of chemically modified mRNA therapeutics through development pipelines is accelerating for many disease indications and the need to assess these analytes is becoming more routine for the pharmaceutical industry and contract research organizations. This article describes some of the challenges and strategies for performing regulated bioanalysis of modified mRNA therapeutics by comparing the two main analytical approaches - quantitative reverse transcription PCR and branched DNA.
In 2019 the German Commission for the Prevention of Blindness (DKVB) held an eye camp in the Tanzanian town of Sumbawanga. For patients with mature cataracts and the ability to see light cateracts were treated by manual small incision cataract surgery (MSICS). For the first time in this camp the quality of the results of the cataract operations was measured.
This Matters Arising Response paper addresses the Hoch et al. (2019) Matters Arising paper published concurrently in this issue of Cell Reports. The genetic study in humans revealed a strong association of DNA variants in the SLC16A11 coding region with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, how these T2D variants affect the function of SLC16A11 remains controversial. In Zhao et al. (2019), with studies using genetic knockout mouse models and in vivo gene reconstitution experiments, we demonstrated ga...
Volanesorsen (Waylivra), an antisense oligonucleotide inhibitor of apolipoprotein CIII (apoCIII) mRNA, is being developed by Ionis Pharmaceuticals through its subsidiary company, Akcea Therapeutics, to treat familial chylomicronemia syndrome (FCS), hypertriglyceridemia and familial partial lipodystrophy (FPL). In May 2019, volanesorsen was approved in the EU for the treatment of adult patients with FCS based on positive results from the multinational, phase III APPROACH and COMPASS studies. Other clinical ...
Three recent studies (Dodson and Kennedy, 2019; Lev et al., 2019; Ouyang et al., 2019) reveal that germ granule formation is necessary to protect germline-expressed genes from improper small RNA-mediated silencing. Loss of this protection leads to accumulation of small RNAs, impacting gene expression in multiple subsequent generations.
Selective RNA degradation is a powerful strategy to combat diseases or study specific RNA function. In this issue of Cell Chemical Biology, Costales et al. (2019) develop a small molecule that mediates selective RNA degradation with the potential for cancer therapeutics.
