To investigate the prognostic value of PD-L1 expression combined with CD8(+) TILs density in patients with resected NSCLC and correlations with clinicopathological features. We retrospectively enrolled 178 patients with resected NSCLC from 2011 to 2015. All surgical primary and 58 matched metastatic lymph node specimens were tested for PD-L1, CD8(+) TILs, and oncogenic alterations. PD-L1(+) was detected in 71 (39.9%) and CD8(high) TILs in 74 (41.6%) cases. Smoking, SqCC, and EGFR(-) were associated with bot...
ZNF750, a transcriptional regulator of epidermal differentiation, has been identified as a tumor suppressor in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). The aim of the present study was to investigate the clinical and prognostic significance of ZNF750 expression and to evaluate the effect of ZNF750 knockdown on cell proliferation, migration, and invasion in ESCC.
Sir: Thyroid-specific transcription factor 1 (TTF-1) is a transcription factor encoded by the NKX2-1 gene, located on chromosome 14.1 Because of its restricted expression pattern, TTF-1 used to be regarded as a specific marker for tumours originating in the thyroid and the lung, thereby facilitating investigations of cancers of unknown primary (CUPs).1 Immunohistochemistry for TTF-1 can differentiate primary pulmonary adenocarcinomas from lung metastases of non-pulmonary adenocarcinomas, and it can distingu...
The aim of the present study was to investigate the prognostic value of the C-reactive protein-to-albumin ratio (CAR) and compare it with other inflammation-based prognostic scores (Glasgow prognostic score, modified Glasgow prognostic score, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio, prognostic nutritional index and prognostic index) in patients with esophageal squamous cell cancer (ESCC). A database of 116 patients with primary ESCC who underwent treatment at the Division of Surgical On...
Pulmonary hypertension from pulmonary arterial hypertension or parenchymal lung disease is associated with an increased risk of primary graft dysfunction after lung transplantation.
The purpose of this study was to determine the prognostic value and oncogenic pathways associated to miRNA expression in squamous cell carcinoma of the oral tongue and to link these miRNA candidates with potential gene targets. We performed a miRNA screening within our institutional cohort (n = 58 patients) and reported five prognostic targets including a cluster of four co-expressed miRNAs (miR-18a, miR-92a, miR-103, and miR-205). Multivariate analysis showed that expression of miR-548b (p = 0.007) and miR...
BACKGROUND S100 family of proteins is mainly involved in regulation of intracellular calcium homeostasis. Aberrant expression of S100 family members has been reported in many types of cancers. However, as a member of S100 family, the prognostic value of S100A6 for lung squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) has not been well-studied. MATERIAL AND METHODS Using immunohistochemistry, we investigated the expression of S100A6 in 177 patients with SCC and further divided the cohort into a high S100A6 expression group and...
The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the significance of pretreatment glycemic parameters in the prognosis of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC).
The prognostic predict biomarkers are important in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). We investigated the expression patterns and quantitation of hypoxia-inducible factor-1 alpha (HIF-1α) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in OSCC patients. Among OSCC patients with recurrence and metastasis, the expression percentages of HIF-1α and VEGF also were analyzed.
To establish a prognostic signature for locally advanced tongue squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC) patients treated with surgery.
We report a case of a 62 year old patient, who was hospitalised due to haemorrhagic shock. The cause was a rupture of the pulmonary artery due to metastasis of a renal cell carcinoma. This cause is now reported for the first time. The primary tumour (pT2,pN0,M0,R0) was resected 25 years ago. This case demonstrates that after curative nephrectomy pulmonary metastasis can occur, even after decades. This is why patients of this type need lifelong follow-up.
Objective: To investigate the expression of syndecan-1 and syndecan-2 and their clinicopathological significance in patients with gallbladder squamous cell (SC)/adenosquamous carcinoma (ASC) and adenocarcinoma (AC). Methods: A total of 126 patients with SC/ASC (n=46) and AC (n=80) were included in this study. The expression levels of syndecan-1 and syndecan-2 were detected by Envison™ immunohistochemistry assay. The clinical and prognostic significance of syndecan-1 and syndecan-2 were analyzed. Results: ...
Primary vaginal carcinoma (PVC) is a rare malignancy. Established prognostic factors include tumour stage and age at diagnosis. The leucine-rich repeats and immunoglobuline-like domains (LRIG)-1 protein functions as a tumour suppressor, but less is known about the functions of LRIG2 and LRIG3. The present study aimed to evaluate the expression of LRIG proteins and analyse their possible associations with clinical characteristics and survival in a cohort of PVC patients.
Deregulation of methionine adenosyltransferase (MAT) is involved in hepatocarcinogenesis. This study aimed to investigate the prognostic implications of the level of histological MAT1A and MAT2A in patients with resected hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
To examine the prognostic impact of the programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression, tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) status, and their combination in esophageal cancer.
The Glasgow prognostic score (GPS) reflects the host systemic inflammatory response and is a validated independent prognostic factor in lung cancer. We investigated GPS as a potential predictive factor of clinical outcomes in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) patients with acute exacerbation (AE).
The 8th edition American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC8) provides the same nodal staging system for mucosal and cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (HNcSCC) and includes extranodal extension (ENE) as an adverse prognostic criterion. This study evaluates the prognostic efficacy of the AJCC8 pathologic nodal staging system (pN) for HNcSCC.
Prognostic markers for melanoma, particularly for stage II disease, are needed for the risk benefit evaluation of future adjuvant therapies. The mainly nuclear RNA-binding protein HuR regulates the protein expression of thousands of mRNAs, its own heterogeneous expression could therefore reflect tumor heterogeneity and plasticity. Here, we evaluate its quantification in primary melanoma as a marker of metastatic outcome.
The most important adverse prognostic factor for laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) is the presence of cervical lymph node metastases. The supraglottic area of the larynx is richly supplied with lymphatics, and 25%-75% of supraglottic carcinomas metastasize in neck lymph nodes. Cortactin is a multidomain protein related to actin cytoskeleton regulation, podosome and lamellipodia formation, integrin signaling, axon guidance and extracellular matrix degradation. Cortactin is involved in metastasis forma...
Lymph node ratio (LNR) is increasingly reported as a potential prognostic tool. The purpose of this review was to analyze the available literature on the prognostic significance of LNR in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC).
To analyze the clinical features and prevalence of synchronous and metachronous second primary malignancies (SPMs) in patients with hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (HSCC), their associated risk factors, and cause-specific mortality.
The purpose of the present study is to investigate the utility of prognostic nutritional index (PNI) as a simple and readily available marker in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC).
Primary immunodeficiency disorders (PIDs) are caused by 1 or more defects of the immune system. Patients are more likely to experience recurrent and/or severe infections and tend to develop a wide range of complications. Respiratory diseases are the main and initial manifestation in most cases and the most common complication. Pulmonary complications cause significant morbidity and mortality in patients with PIDs. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can prevent or at least slow the development of resp...
The purposes of this study were to explore both the prognostic value of pathologic grade and the relationships between differentiation and clinicopathological characteristics in oral squamous cell carcinoma.
The present study investigated the prognostic significance of Wnt family member 5a (Wnt5a) and receptor tyrosine kinase-like orphan receptor 2 (Ror2) expression in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC). The protein expression levels of Wnt5a and Ror2 were analyzed in specimens from 137 patients with LSCC, using immunohistochemical staining of tissue microarrays and pairs of LSCC and adjacent tissue samples, and examined the associations between the two markers and various clinicopathological parameters. ...
