Survival after digit replantation and revascularization is not affected by the use of interpositional grafts during arterial repair.

Interpositional grafts (IG) can be used to reconstruct the digital artery during revascularization and replantation when primary repair is not possible. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of using interpositional graft on rates of digit survival.

Axonal regrowth is impaired during digit tip regeneration in mice.

Mice are intrinsically capable of regenerating the tips of their digits after amputation. Mouse digit tip regeneration is reported to be a peripheral nerve-dependent event. However, it is presently unknown what types of nerves and Schwann cells innervate the digit tip, and to what extent these cells regenerate in association with the regenerative response. Given the necessity of peripheral nerves for mammalian regeneration, we investigated the neuroanatomy of the unamputated, regenerating, and regenerated m...

Are there general laws for digit evolution in squamates? The loss and re-evolution of digits in a clade of fossorial lizards (Brachymeles, Scincinae).

Evolutionary simplification of autopodial structures is a major theme in studies of body-form evolution. Previous studies on amniotes have supported Morse's law, that is, that the first digit reduced is Digit I, followed by Digit V. Furthermore, the question of reversibility for evolutionary digit loss and its implications for "Dollo's law" remains controversial. Here, we provide an analysis of limb and digit evolution for the skink genus Brachymeles. Employing phylogenetic, morphological, osteological, and...

A Novel Muscle Transfer for Independent Digital Control of a Myoelectric Prosthesis: The Starfish Procedure.

Control of independent digital flexion and extension has remained an elusive goal in myoelectric prosthetics for upper extremity amputees. We first performed a cadaver study to determine the feasibility of transferring the interossei muscles for each digit to the dorsum of the hand without damaging the neurovascular pedicles. Once this capability was ensured, a clinical case was performed transferring the interossei of the middle and ring fingers to the dorsum of the hand where they could serve as a myoelec...

Sexual dimorphism in the ontogeny of second (2D) and fourth (4D) digit lengths, and digit ratio (2D:4D).

CMOS-Based Multifrequency Impedance Analyzer for Biomedical Applications.

In this paper, we present a monolithic microsystem, which can perform bioimpedance analysis and electroimpedance tomography measurements as well as record electrocardiogram signals. In contrast to a full analog lock-in approach, a mixed analog/digital solution is adopted. The proposed solution has been designed, implemented, and tested using a commercial 0.35-μm CMOS technology. The tuning range of the signal generator and the detector is from 10 kHz to 10 MHz in 1 kHz steps. The circuit ensures a CMRR ...

Has your smartphone replaced your brain? Construction and validation of the Extended Mind Questionnaire (XMQ).

As digital devices, such as smartphones, are becoming ever more absorbed in the daily lives of adolescents, a major assumption is that they start taking over basic functions of the human mind. A main focus of current debate and research is therefore on investigating adolescents' use of digital technologies. However, the lack of an instrument measuring the degree to which adolescents offload cognitive and social functions to technology hinders debate and research. This paper tests the reliability and validit...

Direct versus indirect measurement of digit ratio: New data from Austria and a critical consideration of clarity of report in 2D:4D studies.

Digit ratio (2D:4D), has been the subject of many studies. However, the best method of measuring digit length, either directly (d2D:4D) or indirectly (i2D:4D), is controversial. In many reports i2D:4D has been found to show a directional effect such that d2D:4D > i2D:4D. The exception is three studies from one group of researchers in Austria. Thus, it is unclear whether this effect is nation- or lab-specific.

Predictors of Hand Dexterity after Single-Digit Replantation.

Microsurgical replantation of the thumb and digits has become an increasingly familiar technique in clinical practice worldwide. However, successful digit replantation does not always provide better hand function than revision amputation. Little information is available regarding predictors of motor skill activities of replanted hands. Therefore, we retrospectively evaluated hand dexterity after single-digit replantation at a minimum follow-up of 1 year and analyzed the factors influencing dexterity.

Analysis of the digital preference for age in the pharmacovigilance system in Brazil, 2008-2013.

The scope of this article is to analyze the digital preference for the "age" variable in the database of cases of adverse drug events reported between 2008 and 2013 in the pharmacovigilance system in Brazil. The database was analyzed in three stages: 1) Initial exploration; 2) standardization of variables; and 3) duplicate records management. The digital preference for the "age" variable according to sex and grouped regions of the country, was determined using the Whipple and Myers methods and also measured...

Developing Digital Intervention Games for Mental Disorders: A Review.

There is limited research on mental health interventions delivered in a digital game format and even less to guide developers on how to develop such games. This review focuses on understanding how to develop therapeutic digital games based primarily on mental health intervention games that have been empirically tested. The review was generated through database searches and backward search techniques for digital game-based interventions for specific mental disorders. We evaluated digital games that were base...

Neurocognitive mechanisms of digit processing and their relationship with mathematics competence.

The dominant model of number processing suggests the existence of a Number Form Area (NFA) in the inferior temporal gyrus (ITG) that supports the processing of Arabic digits as visual symbols of number. However, studies have produced inconsistent evidence for the presence and laterality of digit-specific ITG activity. Furthermore, whether any such activity relates to mathematical competence is unknown. This study investigated these two issues using functional magnetic resonance imaging. Thirty-two adults pe...

Association between Hand Digit Ratio (2D : 4D) and Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

Digit ratio (2D : 4D) has been suggested as a biomarker for prenatal hormone activity and has been linked to several types of cancer. This study investigated the possible correlation between 2D : 4D ratios and acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Analog and Digital Bipolar Resistive Switching in Solution-Combustion-Processed NiO Memristor.

In this study, a NiO-based resistive memristor was manufactured using a solution combustion method. In this device, both analog and digital bipolar resistive switching were observed. They are dependent on the stressed bias voltage. Prior to the electroforming, the analog bipolar resistive switching was realized through the change of the Schottky barrier at p-type NiO/Ag junction by the local migration of the oxygen ion in the interface. On the basis of the analog resistive switching, several synaptic functi...

Mitochondrial Depolarization Stimulates Vascular Repair-Relevant Functions of CD34 Cells via Reactive Oxygen Species-Induced Nitric Oxide Generation.

CD34 haematopoietic stem/progenitor cells (HSPCs) have revascularization potential, and are now being tested for the treatment of ischemic vascular diseases in clinical trials. We tested the hypothesis that mitochondrial depolarization stimulates reparative functions of CD34 cells.

An unusual digital neural loop in a cadaver with bilateral high branching median nerves - case report.

Digital neural loops are present in the palms of most individuals. They can arise within the common palmar digital nerves (CPDNs) or proper palmar digital nerves (PPDNs). Typically, common palmar digital arteries (CPDAs) pass through digital neural loops, however there are reports of loops forming around the superficial palmar arch or proper palmar digital arteries (PPDAs). We describe an unusual digital neural loop that involved both a CPDN and a PPDN. To our knowledge, this is the first documented case of...

Morphological alterations and increased gelatinase activity in the superficial digital flexor tendon of chickens during growth and maturation.
