Invasive Pneumococcal Disease Surveillance, 1 January to 31 March 2017.

The number of notified cases of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) in the first quarter of 2017 was less than the previous quarter, but greater than the number of notified cases in the first quarter of 2016. Overall, the decline in disease due to the serotypes targeted by the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (13vPCV) has been maintained across all age groups since the 13vPCV replaced the 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (7vPCV) in the childhood immunisation program from July 2011 (Figure 1).

Total deal value in the second quarter did not quite reach the peak of 2014 (paced by Novartis' USD 16 billion purchase of G...

Invasive Pneumococcal Disease Surveillance, 1 April to 30 June 2017.

The number of notified cases of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) in the second quarter of 2017 was greater than the previous quarter and also the second quarter of 2016. Following the July 2011 replacement of the 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (7vPCV) in the childhood immunisation program with the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (13vPCV), there was an initial relatively rapid decline in disease due to the additional six serotypes covered by the 13vPCV across all age groups, however more...

Association of quarter milking measurements and cow-level factors in an automatic milking system.

The primary aim of this observational study, in a single herd milked using multiple automatic milking system units, was to describe associations of quarter milk yield variability and quarter peak milk flow rate with cow-level factors. Information from the current lactation of 1,549 primiparous and multiparous cows was collected from January to December 2015. Data from each individual milking used in the analysis included quarter milk yield (QMY), udder milk yield, quarter peak milk flow rate (QPMF), quarter...

Elimination of selected mastitis pathogens during the dry period.

We aimed to evaluate the elimination of 4 different mastitis pathogens, Streptococcus agalactiae, Mycoplasma bovis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus uberis, from infected udder quarters during the dry period using quantitative PCR. The second purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between milk haptoglobin (Hp) concentration and the presence of udder pathogens (Strep. agalactiae, Staph. aureus, M. bovis, and Strep. uberis) in udder quarter milk samples before and after dry period. Asep...

The Causes of Maternal Mortality are Changing and Preventable.

McCaw-Binns' identified trends in maternal and late maternal mortality in Jamaica which mirror trends seen elsewhere. The WHO reported in 2016 that non-communicable diseases (NCD) were the leading cause of death for women (comprising 65% of deaths), with over 75% of these deaths occurring in low and middle-income countries (LMIC). (World Health Organization and UNICEF (2016) A systematic analysis of global causes of maternal deaths from 2003-2009 found one-quarter were due to indirect causes - primarily NCD...

The changing landscape of naloxone availability in the United States, 2011 - 2017.

Opioid overdose deaths have been on the rise in the United States since 1999. Naloxone is a competitive opioid antagonist that rapidly reverses opioid overdose. The implementation of naloxone access laws and development of naloxone formulations that can be administered by laypersons have coincided with changes in the landscape of naloxone availability in the United States. Using data from IQVIA's National Prescription Audit we present the number of naloxone prescriptions dispensed quarterly from 2011 throug...

This quarterly report documents investigations of outbreaks of gastrointestinal illness and clusters of disease...

Lower Quarter Y-Balance Test in healthy women 50-79 years old.

The Lower Quarter Y-Balance Test (LQ-YBT), a measure of dynamic balance used in young adults, has not been adequately studied in older women. We determined the reliability, normative values, and relationships to other balance measures for LQ-YBT in women aged 50-79 years. Interrater reliability was strong, and test-retest reliability was moderate to strong. Results by decade showed women 50-59 years had significantly better scores than both older groups. There were moderate positive correlations between s...

The effect of individual quarter dry-off in management of subclinical mastitis on udder condition and milk production in organic dairy herds: A randomized field trial.

The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of individual quarter dry-off in management of subclinical mastitis on clinical development, behavior during milking, and short-term production loss. The study was conducted as a controlled randomized trial in 5 commercial organic dairy herds. Seventy cows meeting the inclusion criteria were randomly allocated to 1 of 2 treatments: individual quarter dry-off (QDO) or continued milking. The inclusion criteria constituted an increase in somatic cell count ...

Laboratory Trend in Vitamin D Status in Ireland: Dual Concerns about Low and High 25OHD.

Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) is the pre-eminent estimate of vitamin D status that we have been measuring in a hospital laboratory setting since the 1970s. We previously evaluated the trend in 25OHD results in our laboratory from 1993 to 2013. Using a time series analysis of monthly average 25OHD results the trend was modelled, and this was used to forecast monthly average 25OHD from 2014 to 2016. In this study, all 25OHD results from 2014 to 2016 were retrieved (n = 67,922) and trimmed to 40,307 re...

Proton pump inhibitors prescriptions in France: Main trends from 2006 to 2016 on French health insurance database.

Because national data on proton pump inbibitors (PPIs) consumption in France are scarce and because there is a growing literature on potential adverse drug reaction induced by this pharmacological class, we would like to more describe the main evolution of PPI use and the main characteristics of its users in France. We used a 1/97th representative sample of beneficiaries of the French health insurance called "échantillon généraliste des bénéficiaires" (EGB) to describe PPIs' use over time (duration of...

On the apparent decrease in Olympic sprinter reaction times.

Reaction times of Olympic sprinters provide insights into the most rapid of human response times. To determine whether minimum reaction times have changed as athlete training has become ever more specialized, we analyzed the results from the Olympic Games between 2004 and 2016. The results for the 100 m and 110 m hurdle events show that minimum reaction times have systematically decreased between 2004 and 2016 for both sexes, with women showing a marked decrease since 2008 that eliminated the sex difference...

Review of embryo-fetal developmental toxicity studies performed for pharmaceuticals approved by FDA in 2016 and 2017.

Details of embryo-fetal development (EFD) studies were compiled for all FDA drug approvals in 2016-17. Rats and rabbits were used for 63% of small molecule (SM) drugs. The cynomolgus monkey was used for 47% of biopharmaceuticals. Rodent studies using the clinical mAb or animal homologue replaced monkey studies under some circumstances. EFD studies were not required for anti-cancer drugs when the mode of action was associated with known developmental risk. One quarter of SM non-oncology drugs and all tested ...

The results indicated 83.4% of respondents in 2011 reported trust or strong trust in physicians in Chin...

A note on internet use and the 2016 U.S. presidential election outcome.

We use data from the American National Election Studies from 1996 to 2016 to study the role of the internet in the 2016 U.S. presidential election outcome. We compare trends in the Republican share of the vote between likely and unlikely internet users, and between actual internet users and non-users. Relative to prior years, the Republican share of the vote in 2016 was as high or higher among the groups least active online.

Formula Milk Supplementation on the Postnatal Ward: A Cross-Sectional Analytical Study.

Breastfeeding rates are low in the UK, where approximately one quarter of infants receive a breastmilk substitute (BMS) in the first week of life. We investigated the reasons for early BMS use in two large maternity units in the UK, in order to understand the reasons for the high rate of early BMS use in this setting. Data were collected through infant feeding records, as well as maternal and midwife surveys in 2016. During 2016, 28% of infants received a BMS supplement prior to discharge from the hospital ...
