Blowing up money? The earnings penalty of smoking in the 1970s and the 21st century.

We analyze the earnings penalty of smoking among Swedish twins in two social contexts: the 1970s, when smoking was common and widely accepted and when there were relatively few tobacco laws aiming to reduce smoking; and the 2000s, when smoking had become more expensive, stigmatizing and less common, and when tobacco laws and regulations had intensified. The results show that the short-term earnings penalty of smoking was much higher in the 21st century than in the 1970s for men. For women, smokers had on av...

The changing landscape of naloxone availability in the United States, 2011 - 2017.

Opioid overdose deaths have been on the rise in the United States since 1999. Naloxone is a competitive opioid antagonist that rapidly reverses opioid overdose. The implementation of naloxone access laws and development of naloxone formulations that can be administered by laypersons have coincided with changes in the landscape of naloxone availability in the United States. Using data from IQVIA's National Prescription Audit we present the number of naloxone prescriptions dispensed quarterly from 2011 throug...

INTRODUCTION to Special Edition of JAP on the 'Who is My Jung?' conference held at the British Library in October 2017 to mark the 40 Anniversary of the foundation of the Association of Jungian Analysts (AJA).

The paper reviews the processes which went into the creation of an exceptionally comprehensive conference on Jungian analysis and psychology. The conference brought together all five of the constituent societies based in London of the International Association for Analytical Psychology (IAAP). The personal nature of the conference contributions is highlighted together with observations about the passage from spoken to written modes. The idea of 'conference space' is reviewed and this leads to a discussion o...

Boosting effect of IL-7 in interferon gamma release assays to diagnose Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection.

A quarter of the world's population is estimated to be infected with Myobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). Infection is detected by immune response to M. tuberculosis antigens using either tuberculin skin test (TST) and interferon gamma release (IGRA's), tests which have low sensitivity in immunocompromised. IL-7 is an important cytokine for T-cell function with potential to augment cytokine release in in-vitro assays. This study aimed to determine whether the addition of IL-7 in interferon-gamma release assays ...

Post-production handling and administration of protein pharmaceuticals and potential instability issues.

The safety and efficacy of protein pharmaceuticals depend not only on biological activity, but also on purity levels. Impurities may be process related due to limitations in manufacturing, or product related caused by protein degradation occurring throughout the life history of a product. Although the pharmaceutical biotechnology industry has made great progress in improving bulk and drug product manufacturing as well as company-controlled storage and transportation conditions to minimize the level of degra...

For richer, for poorer: the relationship between adolescent obesity and future household economic prosperity.

Adolescent obesity not only has serious long-term health implications, but also the potential to lead to a socioeconomic trajectory of lower earnings and household income. However, the magnitude and mechanisms of such outcomes across the life course are poorly understood. Using birth cohort data from the British National Child Development Study (1958 to 2008), we examined the relationship between adolescent obesity (at age 16) and future household income, employment, wages, marriage and spousal earnings whe...

Swimming activity in zebrafish larvae exposed to veterinary antiparasitic pharmaceuticals.

Veterinary antiparasitic pharmaceuticals have been detected in surface waters and several of these pharmaceuticals act on the nervous system on the target organisms implying that neurological effects also might be of concern in non-target animals such as fish. We tested if exposure to antiparasitic pharmaceuticals affect swimming activity in 6 days old zebrafish larvae. The results revealed that most pharmaceuticals did not cause any effects in swimming activity. However, larvae exposed to 0.58 mg/L doram...

Impact of Pharmaceuticals on the Environment: Risk Assessment Using QSAR Modeling Approach.

An extensive use of pharmaceuticals and the widespread practices of their erroneous disposal measures have made these products contaminants of emerging concern (CEC). Especially, active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) are ubiquitously detected in surface water and soil, mainly in the aquatic compartment, where they do affect the living systems. Unfortunately, there is a huge gap in the availability of ecotoxicological data on pharmaceuticals' environmental behavior and ecotoxicity which force EMEA (Europe...

Messages from the second International Conference on Clinical Metagenomics (ICCMg2).

Clinical metagenomics (CMg) refers to as the application of metagenomic sequencing of clinical samples in order to recover clinically-relevant information. Due to the increasing access to next-generation sequencing (NGS) facilities, CMg is a gast-growing field. In this context, we held the second International Conference on Clinical Metagenomics (ICCMg2) in Geneva in October 2017. During the two days of the conference, several aspects of CMg were addressed, which we propose to summarize in the present manus...

Association of quarter milking measurements and cow-level factors in an automatic milking system.

The primary aim of this observational study, in a single herd milked using multiple automatic milking system units, was to describe associations of quarter milk yield variability and quarter peak milk flow rate with cow-level factors. Information from the current lactation of 1,549 primiparous and multiparous cows was collected from January to December 2015. Data from each individual milking used in the analysis included quarter milk yield (QMY), udder milk yield, quarter peak milk flow rate (QPMF), quarter...

Assessment of 83 pharmaceuticals in WWTP influent and effluent samples by UHPLC-MS/MS: Hourly variation.

The removal efficiency of pharmaceuticals in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is variable and some of these compounds pass these plants almost intact and others presenting a removal efficiency close to 100%. Their incomplete removal results in a continuous discharge of pharmaceuticals into the environment. To assess the profile of contamination of influents and effluents over a day, a set of 83 pharmaceuticals were evaluated hourly in a WWTP in Leiria, Portugal. The composite samples of the influent and ...

The Economic Foundations of Cohabiting Couples' Union Transitions.

In recent decades, cohabitation has become an increasingly important relationship context for U.S. adults and their children, a union status characterized by high levels of instability. To understand why some cohabiting couples marry but others separate, researchers have drawn on theories emphasizing the benefits of specialization, the persistence of the male breadwinner norm, low income as a source of stress and conflict, and rising economic standards associated with marriage (the marriage bar). Because of...

Can cultural consumption increase future earnings? Exploring the economic returns to cultural capital.

Cultural consumption is often viewed as a form of embodied cultural capital which can be converted into economic rewards (e.g., earnings) because such practices increase the likelihood of moving into more advantaged social positions. However, quantitative evidence supporting this theory remains uncertain because it is often unable to rule out alternative explanations. Cultural consumption appears to influence hiring decisions in some elite firms, in both the US and the UK, but it is unclear whether these pr...

Can Women Have Children and a Career? IV Evidence from IVF Treatments.

This paper introduces a new IV strategy based on IVF (in vitro fertilization) induced fertility variation among childless women to estimate the causal effect of having children on their career. For this purpose, we use administrative data on IVF treated women in Denmark. Because observed chances of IVF success do not depend on labor market histories, IVF treatment success provides a plausible instrument for childbearing. Our IV estimates indicate that fertility effects on earnings are: (i) negative, large, ...
