Phenotypic switching in newly emerged multidrug-resistant pathogen Candida auris.

Candida auris is an emerging, multidrug-resistant yeast that can spread rapidly in healthcare settings. Phenotypic switching has been observed in other Candida species and can potentially interfere with correct identification. The aim of this study is to address misidentification of C. auris by describing alternate phenotypes after broth enrichment and subculturing on CHROMagar Candida. Each isolate displayed different frequencies of phenotypic switching, suggesting a strain to strain variability. Increased...

A Candida auris Outbreak and Its Control in an Intensive Care Setting.

Candida auris is an emerging and multidrug-resistant pathogen. Here we report the epidemiology of a hospital outbreak of C. auris colonization and infection.

Candida auris: Epidemiology, risk factors, virulence, resistance, and therapeutic options.

Candida auris emerged as a pathogen resistant to multiple antifungal and has been associated with nosocomial outbreaks with high transmission capacity between hospitalized individuals. C. auris was first described in 2009, after being isolated from the external ear canal discharge of a patient in Japan. The difficulty in identification, incorrect use of antifungal drugs, and treatment failure are causes of high mortality. Since then, C. auris has been increasingly reported from East Asia to North America, w...

Invasive Candida auris infections in Kuwait hospitals: epidemiology, antifungal treatment and outcome.

Candida auris is a recently recognized yeast pathogen, which has attracted worldwide attention due to its multidrug-resistant nature and associated high mortality rates. Its persistence in hospital environment and propensity of nosocomial transmission underscores the need of continuous monitoring to prevent outbreaks. Since the first case of C. auris candidemia in May, 2014, we have identified 17 additional invasive cases, which are described here.

Five-year profile of candidemia at an Indian Trauma Center: high rates of Candida auris blood stream infections.

Candidemia is a potentially fatal infection with varied distribution of Candida species and their antifungal susceptibility profiles. The recent emergence of Candida auris in invasive candidiasis is a cause for concern. This study describes the profile of candidemia at an Indian tertiary care hospital and reports the emergence of Candida auris.

The first isolate of Candida auris in China: clinical and biological aspects.

The emerging human fungal pathogen Candida auris has been recognized as a multidrug resistant species and is associated with high mortality. This fungus was first described in Japan in 2009 and has been reported in at least 18 countries on five continents. In this study, we report the first isolate of C. auris from the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) of a hospitalized woman in China. Interestingly, this isolate is susceptible to all tested antifungals including amphotericin B, fluconazole, and caspofung...

The comparative efficacy of antiseptics against Candida auris biofilms.

Candida auris has emerged as a significant clinical entity due to its ability to cause outbreaks within the healthcare setting. A key feature of its nosocomial lifestyle is its ability to transfer between patients, yet little is known about the mechanisms behind this. A panel of C. auris clinical isolates was screened for their planktonic and sessile susceptibilities to skin disinfection challenge using povidone iodine, chlorhexidine and hydrogen peroxide. C. auris biofilms displayed increased tolerance to ...

Molecular epidemiology of Candida auris in Colombia reveals a highly-related, country-wide colonization with regional patterns in Amphotericin B resistance.

Candida auris is a multidrug-resistant yeast associated with hospital outbreaks worldwide. During 2015-2016, multiple outbreaks were reported in Colombia. We aimed to understand the extent of contamination in healthcare settings and to characterize the molecular epidemiology of C. auris in Colombia.

Sixty Years of Discovery.

Each of us is a story. Mine is a story of doing science for 60 years, and I am honored to be asked to tell it. Even though this autobiography was written for the Annual Review of Immunology, I have chosen to describe my whole career in science because the segment that was immunology is so intertwined with all else I was doing. This article is an elongation and modification of a talk I gave at my 80th birthday celebration at Caltech on March 23, 2018. Expected final online publication date for the Annual Rev...

Peacekeepers suffered combat-related injuries in Mali: a retrospective, descriptive study.

To describe the combat-related injuries cured by Chinese Level 2 medical treatment facility (CHN L2) in Mali from 1 March 2016 to 1 March 2018, including type of weapon, mortality, nature of injuries, degree and location of injuries and surgical procedures. METHODS : A retrospective, descriptive study of 176 injured cases that met the terrorist attacks was conducted. The medical data were collected by an electronic database system. All collected data were entered into an Excel spreadsheet for calculation.

Antifungal Activity of Octenidine Dihydrochloride and Ultraviolet-C light against Multidrug-Resistant Candida auris.

Outbreaks due to multidrug-resistant Candida auris have emerged as a large threat to modern medicine. Since skin colonization and environmental contamination have been identified as a precursor for outbreaks, we evaluated the antifungal activity of ultraviolet-C light using mercury vapor lamp with a peak emission of 254±2 nm and octenidine dihydrochloride against C. auris clinical isolates. Octenidine dihydrochloride was found effective at significantly lower concentrations (0.00005-0.0004%) than those cur...

INTRODUCTION to Special Edition of JAP on the 'Who is My Jung?' conference held at the British Library in October 2017 to mark the 40 Anniversary of the foundation of the Association of Jungian Analysts (AJA).

The paper reviews the processes which went into the creation of an exceptionally comprehensive conference on Jungian analysis and psychology. The conference brought together all five of the constituent societies based in London of the International Association for Analytical Psychology (IAAP). The personal nature of the conference contributions is highlighted together with observations about the passage from spoken to written modes. The idea of 'conference space' is reviewed and this leads to a discussion o...

Is Sharing Speaker's Slides from Conference Presentations on Social Media a breach of Intellectual Property or a Delegate's Right? Depends who you ask.

The contemporary practice of the sharing of speaker's slides from medical conference presentations is common but raises a number of complex ethical and legal questions. We investigated the views of a large group of international hernia surgeons to evaluate the comtemporary view on this topic.

Making it work: the feasibility and logistics of delivering large-scale interprofessional education to undergraduate healthcare students in a conference format.

An interprofessional education conference was developed and delivered to undergraduate medical and pharmacy students to address training needs around appropriate antimicrobial prescribing, identification and management of sepsis, patient safety and interprofessional working. The day consisted of keynote lectures delivered by specialist speakers and three small group interprofessional teaching sessions exploring (1) the choice and prescribing of antimicrobials for a range of infections, (2) the diagnosis and...
