Adult height is a function of genetic predispositions and environmental influences during childhood. Hence, any variation in height among monozygotic twins, who share genetic predispositions, is bound to reflect differences in their environmental exposure. Therefore, a height premium in earnings among monozygotic twins also reflects such exposure. In this study, we analyze the height premium over the life cycle among Swedish twins, 10,000 of whom are monozygotic. The premium is relatively constant over the ...
Using a theoretical approach grounded in implicit bias and stereotyping theories, this study examines the relationship between observable physical characteristics (skin tone, height, and gender) and earnings, as measured by income. Combining separate streams of research on the influence of these three characteristics, we draw from a sample of 31,356 individual-year observations across 4,340 individuals from the National Longitudinal Study of Youth (NLSY) 1997. We find that skin tone, height, and gender inte...
Living in rural Maine, Jeffrey Hall's own rhythm has been thrown upside down after he received a very unexpected call one morning on the award of this year's Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Together with Michael Rosbash and Mike Young, they were recognized "for their discoveries of molecular mechanisms controlling the circadian rhythm." Cell editor Marta Koch caught up with Jeff on a calm Sunday morning, when electricity at his house had just returned after recent storms. Annotated excerpts from the...
On-call medical services assumed by residents represent many hours of hard work and no studies have documented what it really is. As part of an effort to ameliorate our on-call system, we examined phone calls received by residents on call. Our objectives were to evaluate the characteristics of phone calls received by residents on call (who, when, why, need to go to the hospital) and to determine residents' perception of these calls. We also looked into implementing strategies to reduce unnecessary calls.
Delayed return to work is common after acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), but has undergone little detailed evaluation. We examined factors associated with the timing of return to work after ARDS, along with lost earnings and shifts in healthcare coverage.
Graduate medical education programs typically set up call under the assumption that residents will have similar experiences. The terms black cloud and white cloud have frequently been used to describe residents with more difficult (black) or less difficult (white) call experiences. This study followed residents in the department of head and neck surgery during call to determine whether certain residents have a significantly different call experience than the norm. It is a prospective observational study con...
This Cell Systems Call features invited summaries of 32 of the 38 papers accepted for presentation in the "regular track" at the 2017 Research in Computational Molecular Biology conference. The editors have categorized the summaries into cancer genomics, genetics, mass spectrometry, metagenomics, network analysis, phylogenetics, sequence annotation, sequence informatics, single-cell data analysis, and structural biology.
Patients in a locked-in state (LIS) due to severe neurological disorders such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) require seamless emergency care by their caregivers or guardians. However, it is a difficult job for the guardians to continuously monitor the patients' state, especially when direct communication is not possible. In the present study, we developed an emergency call system for such patients using a steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP)-based brain switch. Although there have been previ...
Delays in call light response are a significant patient quality and safety concern. Research on call light interventions and patient outcomes has focused exclusively on adult inpatients. This project examined the impact of increasing staff awareness and workflow redesign to improve the pediatric patient experience and outcomes based on timely response.
During May 2015, passive acoustic recorders were deployed at eight subtidal oyster reefs within Harris Creek Oyster Sanctuary in Chesapeake Bay, Maryland USA. These sites were selected to represent both restored and unrestored habitats having a range of oyster densities. Throughout the survey, the soundscape within Harris Creek was dominated by the boatwhistle calls of the oyster toadfish, Opsanus tau. A novel, multi-kernel spectral correlation approach was developed to automatically detect these boatwhistl...
OBJECTIVE To investigate potential associations between repository radiographic findings and subsequent performance of Quarter Horses competing in cutting events. DESIGN Retrospective cohort study. SAMPLE Repository radiographs (ie, radiographs obtained at the time of sale) for 343 client-owned horses. PROCEDURES Repository radiographic findings were compared with objective measures of performance, including the likelihood of competing; the likelihood of earning money as a 3-year-old, as a 4-year-old, and a...
Turnover intentions refer to employees' intent to leave the organization and, within call centers, it can be influenced by factors such as relational variables or the perception of the quality of working life, which can be affected by emotional dissonance. This specific job demand to express emotions not felt is peculiar in call centers, and can influence job satisfaction and turnover intentions, a crucial problem among these working contexts. This study aims to detect, within the theoretical framework of t...
To determine whether call center dispatchers wearing headsets are subject to auditory fatigue at the end of a work shift.
Anthropogenic disturbance has been pointed to as one of the major causes of the world´s biodiversity crisis. Among them, noise pollution is a potential underestimated threat, projected to increase in the next decades accompanying urban expansion. Rising levels of noise pollution may result in negative impacts on species highly dependent on acoustic communication. Amphibians have long served as model organisms for investigating animal acoustic communication because their reproduction depends on transmitting...
Long distance acoustic signals are widely used in animal communication systems and, in many cases, essential for reproduction. The Acoustic Adaptation Hypothesis (AAH) implies that acoustic signals should be selected for further transmission and better content integrity under the acoustic constraints of the habitat in which they are produced. In the present study, we test predictions derived from the AAH in frogs. Specifically, we focus on the difference between torrent frogs and frogs calling in less noisy...

Few community interventions exist to reduce secondhand exposure to tobacco smoke in the home. This study presents the coaching process of a larger intervention to promote smoke-free homes across an efficacy and 2 effectiveness trials. It furthers assesses the coaching call's reach and participants' satisfaction with the call across three intervention sites. The sources of the data were from baseline and 3-month follow-up surveys, coaching forms or online tracking system and interviews with coaches. Reach fo...
The presented paper aims to evaluate the importance of (54)Fe XS in iron by means of measuring the reaction rates of the selected reactions on (54)Fe and measuring a fast neutron leakage spectra from the iron sphere of 100cm in diameter by a stilbene scintillation detector with subsequent XS sensitivity analysis. The reactions involved in the study were (54)Fe(n,p) and (54)Fe(n,α). Measured neutron induced reaction rates in (54)Fe are compared with calculated ones in different nuclear data libraries. We sh...
The increased volume in demand worldwide in the present day has led to the need for the establishment of effective ambulance services. As call centers have become the primary contact point between patients and emergency service providers, the planning of the call center has become a key task for administrators.
To declare a call to action to improve mental health in the workplace.
Addition of a reminder program to conventional indications improves colonoscopy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a short telephone call reminder (STCR) on a patient's first colonoscopy.
Zirconium is an important material used in most of reactor concepts for fuel cladding. Thus the knowledge of its cross section is important for reliable prediction of fuel operation. Also (90)Zr(n,2n) reaction, is included in IRDFF files as dosimetry cross section standard. Due to its very high threshold, 12.1MeV, it is suitable for measurement of high energy neutrons. One of possible interesting applications is also evaluation of prompt fission neutron spectra in (235)U and (238)U what is under auspices of...
Defining the vocal repertoire provides a basis for understanding the role of acoustic signals in sexual and social interactions of an animal. The Asian koel (Eudynamys scolopacea) is a migratory bird which spends its summer breeding season in the plains of Pakistan. The bird is typically wary and secretive but produces loud and distinct calls, making it easily detected when unseen. Like the other birds in the wild, presumably Asian koels use their calls for social cohesion and coordination of different beha...
We evaluated the first-medical-contact-to-balloon (FMC2B) time after implementation of a "Call 911" protocol for ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) interfacility transfers in a regional system.
The purpose of this letter is to refute the comments written by Smits, Goverts, and Versfeld (2017).
