Impact of the biomass burning on methane variability during dry years in the Amazon measured from an aircraft and the AIRS sensor.

The present study examines the spatiotemporal variability and interrelations of the atmospheric methane (CH4), carbon monoxide (CO) and biomass burning (BB) outbreaks retrieved from satellite data over the Amazon region during the 2003-2012 period. In the climatological context, we found consistent seasonal cycles of BB outbreaks and CO in the Amazon, both variables showing a peak during the dry season. The dominant CO variability mode features the largest positive loadings in the southern Amazon, and descr...

Influenza vaccination in preventing outbreaks in schools: A long-term ecological overview.

Influenza vaccination is the most effective way to reduce the incidence of influenza infections. However, the role of influenza vaccination, such as school-based influenza vaccination, in preventing the influenza outbreaks in schools remains unclear now. In this study, a total of 286 school febrile outbreaks involving 6863 cases in the Beijing area from September 1, 2006 to March 31, 2017 were analyzed. We also tested 294 circulating strains isolated in Beijing during the same period and compared with that ...

PBMs: Will the Amazon Cometh?

PBM consultant Linda Cahn says that if Amazon gets into the PBM business it could insist that drugmakers simultaneously submit the net discount price for each of their drugs for the subsequent six months. Amazon could then publicize every drug's actual price, by drug and by therapeutic category.

Tiger-Moths in Savannas in Eastern Amazon: First Assessment of Diversity and Seasonal Aspects.

Biodiversity knowledge on insects is urgently needed due to the ever growing demand for food and the consequent deforestation process and loss of natural habitats in many understudied tropical regions. In this paper, we describe the outcome of a biodiversity research on tiger moths performed for the first time in a poorly studied Amazonian landscape-the savanna. We sampled tiger moths monthly with UV automatic light traps for 12 consecutive months in two sampling points in an area of savanna in eastern Amaz...

Damming the rivers of the Amazon basin.

More than a hundred hydropower dams have already been built in the Amazon basin and numerous proposals for further dam constructions are under consideration. The accumulated negative environmental effects of existing dams and proposed dams, if constructed, will trigger massive hydrophysical and biotic disturbances that will affect the Amazon basin's floodplains, estuary and sediment plume. We introduce a Dam Environmental Vulnerability Index to quantify the current and potential impacts of dams in the basin...

Relationship between physical fitness at the end of pre-season and the in-season game performance in Japanese female professional baseball players.

This study examined anthropometric and fitness profiles of Japanese female professional baseball players and investigated the relationship between players' physical fitness and in-season game performance. Fifty-seven players who were registered in the Japan Women's Baseball League (JWBL) participated. Height, weight, grip strength, back strength, knee-extension and -flexion strength, hamstring extensibility, vertical jump height, and horizontal jump distance were measured at pre-season (February and March) ...

Individual background factors associated with vaccination for seasonal influenza in Japanese schoolchildren.

There is little evidence about how individual background factors affect seasonal influenza vaccination of children. At the end of the 2014/2015 influenza season, a cross-sectional questionnaire survey of all elementary schoolchildren in 29 schools in Matsumoto City, Japan, was conducted to obtain information about vaccine uptake activity and individual background factors. Of the 10,524 subjects who responded, 5063 (48.1%) had been vaccinated. Grade in school, underlying disease, number of siblings, and diag...

Is 8:30 a.m. Still Too Early to Start School? A 10:00 a.m. School Start Time Improves Health and Performance of Students Aged 13-16.

While many studies have shown the benefits of later school starts, including better student attendance, higher test scores, and improved sleep duration, few have used starting times later than 9:00 a.m. Here we report on the implementation and impact of a 10 a.m. school start time for 13 to 16-year-old students. A 4-year observational study using a before-after-before (A-B-A) design was carried out in an English state-funded high school. School start times were changed from 8:50 a.m. in study year 0, to 10 ...

A Comparison of Pre-Season and In-Season Practice and Game Loads in NCAA Division I Football Players.

The aim of the present study was to quantify the individual practice and game loads throughout an NCAA division I football season to determine if significant differences exist between the practice loads associated with pre-season training camp and those undertaken during the in-season period. Thirty-one NCAA division I football players were monitored using GPS and IA (MinimaxX S5; Catapult Innovations, Melbourne, Australia) during 22 pre-season practices, 36 in-season practices, and 12 competitions. The sea...

White matter alterations over the course of two consecutive high-school football seasons and the effect of a jugular compression collar: A preliminary longitudinal diffusion tensor imaging study.

The cumulative effects of repetitive subclinical head impacts during sports may result in chronic white matter (WM) changes and possibly, neurodegenerative sequelae. In this pilot study, we investigated the longitudinal WM changes over the course of two consecutive high-school football seasons and explored the long-term effects of a jugular vein compression collar on these WM alterations. Diffusion tensor imaging data were prospectively collected both pre- and postseason in the two consecutive seasons. Part...

School Nurses on the Front Lines of Medicine: Take a BREATH: The Approach to a Student With Respiratory Distress.

Students presenting with varying degrees of respiratory symptoms and distress occur commonly in the school setting. It is important to develop a differential diagnosis for respiratory distress, to initiate stabilization of the student with life-threatening symptoms, and to triage these students to an appropriate level of care (back to the classroom, home with their guardian with follow up at their primary health care provider's office, or directly to the closest emergency department via Emergency Medical Se...

Long-term impact of Amazon river runoff on northern hemispheric climate.

Amazon discharges a large volume of freshwater into the ocean, yet its impact on climate is largely unknown. Climate projections show that a warmer northern tropical Atlantic Ocean together with a warmer equatorial Pacific lead to extreme droughts in the Amazonia, considerably reducing the Amazon runoff. Here we present results from coupled model simulations and observations on the climatic response to a significant reduction in Amazon runoff into the Atlantic Ocean. Climate model simulation without Amazon ...

The decreasing range between dry- and wet- season precipitation over land and its effect on vegetation primary productivity.

One consequence of climate change is the alteration of global water fluxes, both in amount and seasonality. As a result, the seasonal difference between dry- (p < 100 mm/month) and wet-season (p > 100 mm/month) precipitation (p) has increased over land during recent decades (1980-2005). However, our analysis expanding to a 60-year period (1950-2009) showed the opposite trend. This is, dry-season precipitation increased steadily, while wet-season precipitation remained constant, leading to reduced seasonalit...
