The mathematics of market timing.

Market timing is an investment technique that tries to continuously switch investment into assets forecast to have better returns. What is the likelihood of having a successful market timing strategy? With an emphasis on modeling simplicity, I calculate the feasible set of market timing portfolios using index mutual fund data for perfectly timed (by hindsight) all or nothing quarterly switching between two asset classes, US stocks and bonds over the time period 1993-2017. The historical optimal timing path ...

Analysis of global stock index data during crisis period via complex network approach.

Considerable research has been done on the complex stock market, however, there is very little systematic work on the impact of crisis on global stock markets. For filling in these gaps, we propose a complex network method, which analyzes the effects of the 2008 global financial crisis on global main stock index from 2005 to 2010. Firstly, we construct three weighted networks. The physics-derived technique of minimum spanning tree is utilized to investigate the networks of three stages. Regional clustering ...

Protein biochips based on macroporous polymer supports: Material properties and analytical potential.

A series of rigid macroporous polymer layers differed by hydrophobic-hydrophilic properties was synthesized in situ in preliminary fabricated wells and applied as the platforms for protein biochips. Scanning electron microscopy, etalon porosimetry and BET analysis were used for materials characterization. The comparison of analytical efficiency of the developed platforms allowed for the choice of the most optimal polymer, as well as the evaluation of impact of material porous properties. The quantitative pa...

The struggle for existence in the world market ecosystem.

The global trade system can be viewed as a dynamic ecosystem in which exporters struggle for resources: the markets in which they export. We can think that the aim of an exporter is to gain the entirety of a market share (say, car imports from the United States). This is similar to the objective of an organism in its attempt to monopolize a given subset of resources in an ecosystem. In this paper, we adopt a multilayer network approach to describe this struggle. We use longitudinal, multiplex data on trade ...

Effects of market type and time of purchase on oxidative status and descriptive off-odors and off-flavors of beef in Vietnam.

The objective of the current study was to determine the effects of market type (super market - SM, indoor market - IM, open market - OM) and sampling time (at the opening - T0 and 4 h after the opening - T4) on antioxidant capacity, lipid oxidation, and descriptive sensory attributes of beef in Vietnam. Values of FC and TEAC were greater in OM beef than IM and SM (P

Wavelet-based time series model to improve the forecast accuracy of PM concentrations in Peninsular Malaysia.

This study presents the use of a wavelet-based time series model to forecast the daily average particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of less than 10 μm (PM) in Peninsular Malaysia. The highlight of this study is the use of a discrete wavelet transform (DWT) in order to improve the forecast accuracy. The DWT was applied to convert the highly variable PM series into more stable approximations and details sub-series, and the ARIMA-GARCH time series models were developed for each sub-series. Two dif...

A heterogeneous artificial stock market model can benefit people against another financial crisis.

This paper presents results of an artificial stock market and tries to make it more consistent with the statistical features of real stock data. Based on the SFI-ASM, a novel model is proposed to make agents more close to the real world. Agents are divided into four kinds in terms of different learning speeds, strategy-sizes, utility functions, and level of intelligence; and a crucial parameter has been found to ensure system stability. So, some parameters are appended to make the model which contains zero-...

Micro-Electrode-Dot-Array Digital Microfluidic Biochips: Technology, Design Automation, and Test Techniques.

Digital microfluidic biochips (DMFBs) are being increasingly used for DNA sequencing, point-of-care clinical diagnostics and immunoassays. DMFBs based on a micro-electrodedot-array (MEDA) architecture have recently been proposed, and fundamental droplet manipulations, e.g., droplet mixing and splitting, have also been experimentally demonstrated on MEDA biochips. There can be thousands of microelectrodes on a single MEDA biochip, and the fine-grained control of nanoliter volumes of biochemical samples and r...

Driving forces and mitigation potential of global CO emissions from 1980 through 2030: Evidence from countries with different income levels.

To mitigate global carbon dioxide (CO) emissions in an effective manner, it is essential to identify the driving forces and estimate the reduction potential of changes to CO emissions. Using an extended logarithmic mean Divisia index (LMDI) method, this study decomposes the changes in global emissions between 1980 and 2015 with consideration of different income levels; it also reports on scenario analysis of the global emissions reduction potential up to the year 2030 to explore feasible mitigation pathways...

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for MSM in low HIV incidence places: should high risk individuals be targeted?

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) targeting high-risk men who have sex with men (MSM) has been shown to be a cost-effective HIV control measure. However, the approach could be a challenge in low HIV incidence places with a low proportion of high-risk MSM. To examine the impact of PrEP in such setting in Asia, we developed an epidemic model and conducted cost-effectiveness analysis using empirical multicentre clinical and HIV sequence data from HIV-infected MSM in Hong Kong, in conjunction with behavioural dat...

The Inverse Poisson Functional for forecasting response time to environmental events and global climate change.

A series of Poisson distributions are fit to sets of global cost-of-impact data representing large-scale accidents and anthropogenic catastrophes. The fits are used to build a function representing data means and are designated the Inverse Poisson Functional. Climate and environmental data have been used to develop a cost-frequency population distribution and to estimate the expected time between events. On a global scale, we show that expected wait- or reaction- times can be estimated using the Poisson den...

Vital Signs: Prevalence of Key Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors for Million Hearts 2022 - United States, 2011-2016.

Despite decades-long reductions in cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality, CVD mortality rates have recently plateaued and even increased in some subgroups, and the prevalence of CVD risk factors remains high. Million Hearts 2022, a 5-year initiative, was launched in 2017 to address this burden. This report establishes a baseline for the CVD risk factors targeted for reduction by the initiative during 2017-2021 and highlights recent changes over time.

Laboratory Trend in Vitamin D Status in Ireland: Dual Concerns about Low and High 25OHD.

Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) is the pre-eminent estimate of vitamin D status that we have been measuring in a hospital laboratory setting since the 1970s. We previously evaluated the trend in 25OHD results in our laboratory from 1993 to 2013. Using a time series analysis of monthly average 25OHD results the trend was modelled, and this was used to forecast monthly average 25OHD from 2014 to 2016. In this study, all 25OHD results from 2014 to 2016 were retrieved (n = 67,922) and trimmed to 40,307 re...

Pilot assessment of probiotics for pregnant women in Rwanda.

While the global market for probiotics is soon to reach in excess of US$50 billion, the continent of Africa has been largely ignored, despite these products having the ability to reduce the burden of disease and death.

A chicken bioreactor for efficient production of functional cytokines.

The global market for protein drugs has the highest compound annual growth rate of any pharmaceutical class but their availability, especially outside of the US market, is compromised by the high cost of manufacture and validation compared to traditional chemical drugs. Improvements in transgenic technologies allow valuable proteins to be produced by genetically-modified animals; several therapeutic proteins from such animal bioreactors are already on the market after successful clinical trials and regulato...

Global Access to Essential Medicines for Childhood Cancer: A Cross-Sectional Survey.

Global data mapping access to essential chemotherapeutics for pediatric cancer are scarce. We report a survey of international pediatric cancer care providers' access to these medicines.

Joint Pricing and Decision-Making for Heterogeneous User Demand in Cognitive Radio Networks.

The cognitive radio technique allows secondary users (SUs) to share the spectrum with primary users (PUs) in an exclusive or opportunistic manner. This paper studies spectrum pricing conducted by spectrum owners, that is, primary operators (POs), and SU decision-making strategies for three kinds of duopoly markets. The single-band exclusive use market considers two POs with each providing a single band dedicated to SUs. A pre-emptive resume priority (PRP) M/M/1 queueing model is presented, based on which SU...

The social issue in the BRICS Project.

BRICS, the acronym for Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, is the first multilateral group created and run by non-western developed countries. The group aims to influence world geopolitics and market based on the right of developing and emerging countries to participate equitably in development. The social issue lies at the core of the group's justifications to achieve its goals. In this regard, this paper aims to analyze how the social issue has been addressed by BRICS. The methodology was based...

Global, regional, and national age-sex-specific mortality for 282 causes of death in 195 countries and territories, 1980-2017: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017.

Global development goals increasingly rely on country-specific estimates for benchmarking a nation's progress. To meet this need, the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2016 estimated global, regional, national, and, for selected locations, subnational cause-specific mortality beginning in the year 1980. Here we report an update to that study, making use of newly available data and improved methods. GBD 2017 provides a comprehensive assessment of cause-specific mortality for 2...

Giant Unilamellar Vesicle Microarrays for Cell Function Study.

Giant unilamellar vesicles (GUVs) are widely used as artificial cell models which contribute to elucidate fundamental questions on origin of life and cell functions. Herein, the GUV microarrays were developed using a point-to-plane electrode system combined with microcontact stripping technique. The biomolecules (DNA, etc.) were selectively encapsulated only inside patterned GUVs. The GUV arrays were used to investigate species mass transport across cell membranes. The release of carboxyfluorescein from GUV...

Time to tackle rheumatic heart disease: Data needed to drive global policy dialogues.

Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) is an avoidable disease of poverty that persists predominantly in low resource settings and among Indigenous and other high-risk populations in some high-income nations. Following a period of relative global policy inertia on RHD, recent years have seen a resurgence of research, policy and civil society activity to tackle RHD; this has culminated in growing momentum at the highest levels of global health diplomacy to definitively address this disease of disadvantage. RHD is ine...

Pricing Mechanism With Noncooperative Game and Revenue Sharing Contract in Electricity Market.

In this paper, a pricing mechanism is proposed for the electricity supply chain, which is consisting of one generation company (GC), multiple consumers, and competing utility companies (UCs). The UC participates in electricity supply chain management by a revenue sharing contract (RSC). In the electricity supply chain, the electricity real-time balance has an important role in the stable operation of the power system. Therefore, we introduce the demand response into the electricity supply chain to match sup...

Internationalization of Traditional/Complementary Medicine products: market entry as medicine.

Internationalization of Traditional/Complementary Medicine (T&CM) products is important for initiating and sustaining developments in this field. Particularly for traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs), the global market continues to expand due to an interest in the potential clinical benefits of traditional approaches that are largely considered lower risk and lower cost than many conventional treatments. While the benefits of internationalization hold clear advantages for the business of T&CM products, keep...

Forecasting the global demand for HIV monitoring and diagnostic tests: A 2016-2021 analysis.

Despite considerable progress, just over half of the 37 million people eligible to start antiretroviral therapy (ART) have accessed treatment and millions of HIV-positive people still do not know their status. With demand for ART continuing to grow, meeting the ambitious 90-90-90 HIV treatment targets will depend on improved access to high-quality diagnostics to both diagnose infection and monitor treatment adherence in low and middle-income countries (LMICs). Robust projections of future demand for CD4, vi...
