Evaluating the Commercial Airliner Cabin Environment with Different Air Distribution Systems.

Ventilation systems for commercial airliner cabins are important in reducing contaminant transport and maintaining thermal comfort. To evaluate the performance of a personalized displacement ventilation system, a conventional displacement ventilation system, and a mixing ventilation system, this study first used the Wells-Riley equation integrated with CFD to obtain the SARS quanta value based on a specific SARS outbreak on a flight. This investigation then compared the three ventilation systems in a seven-...

Effect of Planting Date and Inoculum Density on Severity of Fusarium Wilt of Lettuce in California.

Seven lettuce cultivars were transplanted into a field infested with f. sp. (causal agent of Fusarium wilt of lettuce) in August and September of 2014, 2015, and 2016. For moderately susceptible cultivars, 1- or 2-week differences in planting date had a significant effect on severity of Fusarium wilt. In growth chamber experiments, cultivars of moderate susceptibility were maintained in a growth chamber under cool conditions (23/18°C), and a subset of plants was transferred to a warm chamber (33/23°C) f...

Human-induced eutrophication dominates the bio-optical compositions of suspended particles in shallow lakes: Implications for remote sensing.

Suspended particulate matter (SPM) is generally divided into inorganic (SPIM) and organic (SPOM) parts; they come from different sources, and have different impacts on the optical properties and/or water quality of lake. However, in a specific remote sensing process, they are not retrieved separately. Using in-situ data of 59 lakes along the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River (MLR-YR) in dry season (April) and wet season (August) in 2012, we first studied the absorption properties and sources of ...

Temporalities of emergency: Migrant pregnancy and healthcare networks in Southern European borderlands.

In Greece, Italy, and Spain, austerity policies combined with the structural density of migration flows have had concrete social and material manifestations in the delivery of public health care. Through our ethnographic case studies in Lampedusa and southeastern Sicily, Melilla, and Athens, we examine the maternity care offered to migrant patients in the midst and the aftermath of the so-called "migration crisis" in state and non-state structures. Research was conducted in Athens and southeastern Sicily fr...

Femoral nerve palsy following primary total hip arthroplasty with the direct anterior approach.

Nerve palsy following total hip arthroplasty (THA) can have a serious effect on a patient`s functional prognosis and on cost-effectiveness, and it is the leading cause of THA-associated medical litigation. However, only a few studies focus on femoral nerve palsy (FNP) following THA with the direct anterior approach (DAA). Moreover, several studies have reported that THA with DAA may result in higher complication rates, particularly during the so-called 'learning-curve period' for the surgeon. This study aim...

Occurrence, removal and seasonal variation of pharmaceuticals in Brasilian drinking water treatment plants.

The presence of pharmaceuticals in aquatic environments has become a major issue of concern for scientific community, since there is a lack of information about risks and impacts to the environment and public health. In the context of Brazil, many cities do not have Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) and domestic sewage is dumped directly into the water bodies, aggravating the problem. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate the presence of 28 prescribed pharmaceuticals from different therapeutic classes...
