There is little doubt that having a theoretic foundation will benefit the field of visualization, including its main subfields. Because there has been a substantial amount of work on taxonomies and conceptual models in the visualization literature and some recent work on theoretic frameworks, such a theoretic foundation is not a foolish or impractical ambition. This article asks, "How can we build a theoretic foundation for visualization collectively as a community?" The authors envision the pathways for fo...
The article includes a review of selected past and current leadership initiatives as well as a summary of three leadership meetings convened by The Center to Champion Nursing in America, a partnership of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), AARP and the AARP Foundation.
To evaluate the Fetal Medicine Foundation (FMF) algorithm prospectively at 11-13 weeks' gestation in the prediction of preeclampsia (PE).
Almost a quarter of patients with PAO will sustain a subsequent fracture; patients need to be informed about potential risks before deciding for further pregnancies.
Objectives To evaluate the feasibility, strengths, weaknesses, and challenges of a two-site model of dental foundation training. Methods A mixed methods approach was used to evaluate the two-site pilot. Qualitative interviews and focus groups were employed to gain an in-depth understanding of the expectations, experiences and concerns of the stakeholders. Additionally, purposefully designed questionnaires were used to rate different elements of the training. Results Participants included 12 foundation dentist...
Nationally, there is a drive to rotate more Foundation and GP Trainee Doctors through Psychiatry posts. In East London Foundation Trust (ELFT) in Bedfordshire, doctors from Core Psychiatry, Foundation and GP training programmes come to train in Psychiatry. Many will not have worked in Psychiatry before and have little experience of patients with ID. The prevalence of people with ID is increasing with improved life expectancy. They are a complex and vulnerable group with considerable wider legal, ethical and...
In this post hoc analysis of the VITdAL-ICU study, an RCT in critically ill adults with 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels ≤20 ng/ml, vitamin D3 did not have a significant effect on β-Crosslaps and osteocalcin.
This is the first study to directly compare the original and recently updated versions of the trabecular bone score (TBS) algorithm. We confirmed improved performance of the new algorithm, especially among men.
This retrospective study on long-term outcomes in osteogenesis imperfecta type VI found that patients who received intravenous bisphosphonate treatment had an increase in lumbar spine areal bone mineral density, a higher final height z-score, and some reshaping of vertebral bodies.
We evaluated the value of VFA in the identification of vertebral fractures using a retrospective study and a meta-analysis. Performance of VFA was adequate in the meta-analysis although this was not demonstrated in our centre. We recommend checking the performance of VFA tools before exclusively relying on this tool.
Camurati-Engelmann (CE) is a very rare disease affecting one in every million persons worldwide. It is characterized by an enlargement of long bones. We aimed to assess bone characteristics in three siblings with different tools. Even if there was an excess of bone density, quality seemed to be deteriorated.
Bone turnover markers are used for monitoring osteoporosis treatment. Therefore, we evaluated the agreement between different assays for CTX and PINP and established reference intervals in a cohort of 2300 individuals. We found poor agreement between assays and different reference intervals. This highlights the importance of harmonization of the assays.
Hyponatremia is associated with bone demineralization. We hypothesized that, during hyponatremia, calciuria and calcium balance depend on volemic status. We evaluated calciuria in patients with hyponatremia, secondary to SIAD or hypovolemia. Patients with SIAD exhibited a volemic expansion that was associated with hypercalciuria. Calciuria was proportional to markers of volemia.
The meta-analysis suggested that dietary vitamin C was statistically inversely associated with the risk of hip fracture (overall OR = 0.73, 95% CI = 0.55-0.97, I (2) = 69.1%) and with the increase of 50 mg/day vitamin C intake, the risk of hip fracture will reduce by 5% (OR = 0.95, 95% CI 0.91-1.00, P = 0.05).
In type 2 diabetes patients treated in German primary care practices, the use of dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitor (DPP4i) in combination with metformin was associated with a significant decrease in the risk of developing bone fractures compared to metformin monotherapy.
In this large registry-based study, women with diabetes had marginally greater bone mineral density (BMD) loss at the femoral neck but not at other measurement sites, whereas obesity was not associated with greater BMD loss. Our data do not support the hypothesis that rapid BMD loss explains the increased fracture risk associated with type 2 diabetes and obesity observed in prior studies.
The Symposium on Hidradenitis Suppurativa Advances (SHSA) took place on 22-23 October 2016 at Women's College Hospital in Toronto, Canada. This symposium was a joint meeting of the Canadian Hidradenitis Suppurativa Foundation (CHSF), and the Hidradenitis Suppurativa Foundation (HSF Inc.) founded in USA. The purpose of this meeting was to gather well-known researchers from different disciplines to discuss most recent innovations, practical challenges and potential solutions to issues related to management an...
