Evaluation of the 1B Equation to Estimate Glomerular Filtration Rate in Pediatric Patients with Cancer.

The 1B equation is recommended for calculating the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) in children. Since few reports have evaluated the performance of the 1B equation, we investigated the performance of estimated GFR (eGFR) equations with the blood urea nitrogen (BUN) variable for pediatric cancer patients. In total, 203 children with cancer who underwent measured GFR (mGFR) assessment were enrolled. The median (range) mGFR and eGFR calculated using the updated Schwartz equation were 118 (43-241) and 135 (34-...

Organoid Models of Cancer Explode with Possibilities.

Organoids have tremendous promise for modeling human cancers and revealing new biological insights. Sachs et al. (2018), Seino et al. (2018) (in this issue of Cell Stem Cell), and Broutier et al. (2017) derive cancer organoids from breast, pancreas, and liver, respectively, not only reporting new methodologies but also showing their utility for translational and clinical cancer research.

Cost of Cancer Drugs: Something Has To Give.

The drugs often are more effective and have fewer side effects. The science-often just amazing. Medically, cancer treatment has never been in a better place. But are high prices making it unaffordable? Payers, providers, policymakers, and drugmakers themselves are wrestling with the issue. Meanwhile, many patients are being priced out of treatments that could save their lives.

Role of chemokines in metastatic niche: new insights along with a diagnostic and prognostic approach.

Chemokines are cytokines that are involved in the movement of leukocytes and the occurrence of immune responses. It has recently been noted that these cytokines play a role in the movement of cancer cells to different parts of the body and create a suitable environment [i.e. (pre) metastatic niche] for their growth and proliferation. We studied the role of chemokines in the metastasis of cancer cells, as well as their involvement in the proliferation and growth of these cells. Relevant literature was identi...
