Pricing of monoclonal antibody therapies: higher if used for cancer?

The rising prices of specialty drugs have prompted a debate about how medications are priced. With the average price of cancer drugs doubling in the last decade, the unsustainability of drug prices is especially concerning in oncology and hematology. The objective of this study was to compare the prices of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) approved in the last 20 years by the FDA across disease states.

Killing U.S. Slowly: Curing the Epidemic Rise of Cancer Drug Prices.

In August 2015, more than 110 U.S. oncologists published an article detailing the deleterious effects of rising cancer drugs prices and calling for numerous reforms to our prescription drug system. These prices are the result of decades of political maneuvering; they reflect the way our country has chosen to pay for healthcare, to foster and reward innovation, and to promote a national free market system. While these choices have resulted in immense profits for pharmaceutical companies—and subsidized the ...

Evaluation of the 1B Equation to Estimate Glomerular Filtration Rate in Pediatric Patients with Cancer.

The 1B equation is recommended for calculating the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) in children. Since few reports have evaluated the performance of the 1B equation, we investigated the performance of estimated GFR (eGFR) equations with the blood urea nitrogen (BUN) variable for pediatric cancer patients. In total, 203 children with cancer who underwent measured GFR (mGFR) assessment were enrolled. The median (range) mGFR and eGFR calculated using the updated Schwartz equation were 118 (43-241) and 135 (34-...

Organoid Models of Cancer Explode with Possibilities.

Organoids have tremendous promise for modeling human cancers and revealing new biological insights. Sachs et al. (2018), Seino et al. (2018) (in this issue of Cell Stem Cell), and Broutier et al. (2017) derive cancer organoids from breast, pancreas, and liver, respectively, not only reporting new methodologies but also showing their utility for translational and clinical cancer research.

Cost of Cancer Drugs: Something Has To Give.

The drugs often are more effective and have fewer side effects. The science-often just amazing. Medically, cancer treatment has never been in a better place. But are high prices making it unaffordable? Payers, providers, policymakers, and drugmakers themselves are wrestling with the issue. Meanwhile, many patients are being priced out of treatments that could save their lives.

NCCN Guidelines Insights: Genetic/Familial High-Risk Assessment: Colorectal, Version 3.2017.

The NCCN Guidelines for Genetic/Familial High-Risk Assessment: Colorectal provide recommendations for the management of patients with high-risk syndromes associated with an increased risk of colorectal cancer (CRC). The NCCN Panel for Genetic/Familial High-Risk Assessment: Colorectal meets at least annually to assess comments from reviewers within their institutions, examine relevant data, and reevaluate and update their recommendations. These NCCN Guidelines Insights focus on genes newly associated with CR...

The efficacy and safety of atezolizumab vs docetaxel as second- or third-line treatment in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer in the primary (n=850; ITT850) and secondary (n=1225; ITT1225) efficacy populations of the randomized phase III OAK study at an updated data cutoff were assessed.

The 2017 Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology.

The Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology (TBSRTC) established a standardized, category-based reporting system for thyroid fine-needle aspiration (FNA) specimens. The 2017 revision reaffirms that every thyroid FNA report should begin with one of six diagnostic categories, the names of which remain unchanged since they were first introduced: (i) nondiagnostic or unsatisfactory; (ii) benign; (iii) atypia of undetermined significance (AUS) or follicular lesion of undetermined significance (FLUS);...

The clinicopathological parameters significance of CD133 and Nestin in epithelial ovarian cancer: a meta-analysis.

This meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate the association of CD133 and Nestin with epithelial ovarian cancer. Databases (PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang) were searched for relevant studies updated in August 2017. CD133 and Nestin expression were estimated by immunohistochemistry. Statistical analysis was performed by RevMan. A total of 18 studies were included in this meta-analysis. High expression of both CD133 and Nestin was associated with late Internat...

News in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation.

For the first time, the european guidelines for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) have been updated by the ILCOR in december 2017. If new data and findings are available, these guidelines can also be updated outside the 5-year cycle. Thus, it is now recommended that, depending on the level of training of the layer, a chest-compression-only CPR or in combination with ventilation should be done. The important function of the dispatchers in the context of telephone or dispatcher-assisted CPR is emphasized b...

Chinese Protocol of Diagnosis and Treatment of Colorectal Cancer.

Colorectal cancer is one of the most common malignant tumors in China. In 2012 one million thirty six thousand cases of colorectal cancer were diagnosed all over the world, two hundred fifty three thousand cases were diagnosed in China (accounted for 18.6%). China has the largest number of new cases of colorectal cancer in the world. Colorectal cancer has becoming a serious threat of Chinese residents' health. Role of chemokines in metastatic niche: new insights along with a diagnostic and prognostic approach.

Chemokines are cytokines that are involved in the movement of leukocytes and the occurrence of immune responses. It has recently been noted that these cytokines play a role in the movement of cancer cells to different parts of the body and create a suitable environment [i.e. (pre) metastatic niche] for their growth and proliferation. We studied the role of chemokines in the metastasis of cancer cells, as well as their involvement in the proliferation and growth of these cells. Relevant literature was identi...

Evaluation of the relative effectiveness of the 2017 updated Manchester scoring system for predicting BRCA1/2 mutations in a Southeast Asian country.

Germline mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes have significant clinical implications for both risk-reducing and early surveillance management. The third and most recent revision of the Manchester scoring system (MSS3) used to distinguish patients indicated for germline BRCA1/2 testing included further adjustments for triple negative breast cancer, high-grade serous ovarian cancer and human epidermal growth factor 2 (HER2) receptor status. This study aims to evaluate the relative effectiveness of MSS3 in a...

Alachlor Use and Cancer Incidence in the Agricultural Health Study: An Updated Analysis.

The herbicide alachlor has been widely used in US agriculture since its introduction in 1969. Experimental animal studies show that alachlor causes tumors in vivo; however, few epidemiologic studies have examined associations with human cancer risk. We evaluated alachlor use and cancer incidence in the Agricultural Health Study, updating an earlier analysis that suggested associations with lymphohematopoietic cancers with an additional 540 142 person-years of follow-up and 5113 cancer cases.
