Blowing up money? The earnings penalty of smoking in the 1970s and the 21st century.

We analyze the earnings penalty of smoking among Swedish twins in two social contexts: the 1970s, when smoking was common and widely accepted and when there were relatively few tobacco laws aiming to reduce smoking; and the 2000s, when smoking had become more expensive, stigmatizing and less common, and when tobacco laws and regulations had intensified. The results show that the short-term earnings penalty of smoking was much higher in the 21st century than in the 1970s for men. For women, smokers had on av...

Medical Student Perceptions of On-Call Modalities: A Focus Group Study.

Phenomenon: The call component of clerkship presents students with unique opportunities and challenges. Clerkship programs employ various call modalities, including traditional call, night float, and evening call. The impact of these call models on the student experience has not been explored in depth.

One-pot synthesis of β-lactams by the Ugi and Michael addition cascade reaction.

Diversity-oriented synthesis of β-lactams was achieved via Ugi/Michael reaction cascades under mild conditions. The intramolecular hydrogen bonding between the heteroatom from an aldehyde component and the amide NH group controls the chemoselectivity of the Michael reaction versus the aza-Michael reaction. DFT calculation was performed to clarify the mechanism, chemo-selectivity and diastereoselectivity of this work. This one-pot protocol offers a straightforward method to build a diversified β-lactam lib...

Probing the mechanism of thermally driven thiol-Michael dynamic covalent chemistry.

The kinetics and mechanism of the thermally activated dynamic covalent exchange of thiol-Michael adducts is investigated. A model system of thiol-Michael adducts between thiophenol and phenylvinylketone derivatives and adducts between 2-mercaptoethanol phenylvinylketone derivatives in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) at elevated temperatures is used to probe the underlying exchange mechanism. The kinetic data show negligible free Michael acceptor, which is consistent with the highly efficient thiol-Michael react...

In Memoriam: Michael Kleerekoper: August 18, 1944 to May 10, 2018 In relentless pursuit of a better way.

On May 10, 2018, the Bone and Mineral Community lost Michael Kleerekoper, one of its gems. Michael was born in Leeds, England, to Lilly (Biber) and Joseph Kleerekoper. When he was a toddler, the family moved to Sydney, A u44stralia. Michael received his B.Sc. with honors in 1967 and his MBBS (the MD equivalent but never so acknowledged; a prototypical Michaelism!) in 1970. His interest and curiosity in our field was catalyzed under the tutelage of another late giant of our field, Dr. Sol Posen.

Theoretical study on the reaction mechanisms of Michael chirality addition between propionaldehyde and nitroalkene catalyzed by an enantioselective catalyst.

The asymmetric Michael addition between propionaldehyde and nitroalkene catalyzed by 8-(ethoxycarbonyl)-1,2,3,3a,8,8a-hexahydropyrrolo[2,3-b]indole-2-carboxylic acid has obtained relatively high yields and excellent enantioselectivities at room temperature. In this study, the molecular structures and optical activity of the most stable conformation I are optimized at B3LYP/6-311++ G(d,p) level. We find that levorotatory conformation I catalyzing the same Michael addition can produce laevo-product A and dext...

N-Heterocyclic Carbene-Catalyzed Michael-Michael-Lactonization Cascade for the Enantioselective Synthesis of Tricyclic δ-Lactones.

Enantioselective synthesis of tricyclic δ-lactones with three contiguous stereocenters has been demonstrated by the N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-catalyzed functionalization of benzylic C(sp)-H bonds. The NHC-catalyzed reaction of enals with dinitrotoluene derivatives under oxidative conditions proceeds via the chiral α,β-unsaturated acylazoliums and produces the δ-lactones in good yields and excellent diastereoselectivity and enantioselectivity. This mild and atom-economic cascade reaction takes place i...

An Investigation of the Probability of Reciprocation in a Risk Reduction Model of Sharing.

A laboratory study investigated whether reductions in the probability of reciprocation would influence sharing in situations of shortfall risk. Choice in twelve adults was evaluated against the predictions of a risk-reduction model of sharing derived from a risk-sensitive foraging theory (the energy-budget rule). Participants responded on a computer task to earn hypothetical money which could be later exchanged for real money. If participants selected the sharing option, their earnings were pooled and split...

C -symmetric sulfonamides as homogeneous and heterogeneous organocatalysts that mimic enzymes in enantioselective Michael additions.

Herein, we report the synthesis of C -symmetric sulfonamides as homogeneous and heterogeneous organocatalysts and their application in the enantioselective conjugate 1,4-Michael addition of carbonylic nucleophiles to β-nitrostyrene. Organocatalysts hydrogen bond to β-nitrostyrene and enamine in the transition state, mimicking an enzyme leading to final products in high yields (up to 98%) and good enantioselectivities (up to 96%). In addition, these results were supported by density functional calculations...

Organocatalytic Transannular Approach to Stereodefined Bicyclo3.1.0hexanes.

A diastereodivergent approach to highly substituted bicyclo[3.1.0]hexanes has been developed through a transannular alkylation reaction that builds up the bicyclic core employing asymmetric organocatalysis as the tool for the installation of all stereocenters. On one hand, a Michael/Michael cascade process between enals and 4-alkenyl sulfamidate imines under the iminium/enamine activation manifold provides a oxathiazole-2,2-dioxide-fused cyclohexane adduct that, after isolation, is subsequently engaged in a...

Uncertain call likelihood negatively affects sleep and next-day cognitive performance while on-call in a laboratory environment.

On-call working arrangements are employed in a number of industries to manage unpredictable events, and often involve tasks that are safety- or time-critical. This study investigated the effects of call likelihood during an overnight on-call shift on self-reported pre-bed anxiety, sleep and next-day cognitive performance. A four-night laboratory-based protocol was employed, with an adaptation, a control and two counterbalanced on-call nights. On one on-call night, participants were instructed that they woul...

Highly Enantioselective Kinetic Resolution of Michael Adducts through N-Heterocyclic Carbene Catalysis: An Efficient Asymmetric Route to Cyclohexenes.

A highly efficient strategy for the kinetic resolution of Michael adducts was realized using a chiral N-heterocyclic carbene catalyst. The kinetic resolution provides a new convenient route to single diastereomers of cyclohexenes and Michael adducts in good yields with high enantiomeric excesses (up to 99% ee with a selectivity factor of up to 458). This "catch two flies with one stroke" concept allows the synthesis of these two synthetically valuable compound classes at the same time by a single transforma...

Correction to Synthesis of 2-acylindoles via Ag- and Cu-Catalyzed anti-Michael Hydroamination of β-(2-Aminophenyl)-α,β-ynones: Experimental Results and DFT Calculations.

Electrochemically Induced Michael Addition Reaction: An Overview.

Due to its high potential for the formation of carbon-carbon bonds, Michael addition reaction is one of the closest reactions to the heart of synthetic organic chemists. Electrochemistry presents a very stimulating and divergent resource for selective oxidation and reduction in organic chemistry, generating activated species, for example radical anions or radical cations. In this review, we try to underscore usefulness of electrogenerated Michael addition reaction with the hope of encouraging synthetic orga...

Discovery of Presaccharothriolide X, a Retro-Michael Reaction Product of Saccharothriolide B, from the Rare Actinomycete Saccharothrix sp. A1506.

The highly reactive precursor molecule, presaccharothriolide X, was successfully isolated from the rare actinomycete Saccharothrix sp. A1506. The comparable biological activity of presaccharothriolide X and its Michael addition product saccharothriolide B unveils a unique masking/activating property of 2-aminophenol. Unexpectedly, 2-aminophenol in saccharothriolide B was eliminated through a retro-Michael reaction, to yield presaccharothriolide X under physiological conditions. 2-Aminophenol might be develo...

Cheating behavior in children: Integrating gaze allocation and social awareness.

Children's cheating and factors supporting honesty are not well understood. The current work explored variables involved in children's cheating through eye-tracking and an implicit manipulation in which extrinsic awareness of the effects of one's behaviors on others was primed. Participants played a computer game with the option for a monetary gain in which they could earn more if they selectively erred in response to more profitable stimuli. Results show that children cheat by making selective effort towar...

How the likelihood of missing the alarm during an on-call shift affects pre-bed anxiety, sleep and next day cognitive performance.

This study investigated how the likelihood of missing an alarm affects pre-bed anxiety, sleep and next day cognitive performance during on-call shifts. Participants (n = 24) completed one adaptation night, one control night and two on-call nights in a time-isolated sleep laboratory. On one of the on-call nights, participants were informed that they would be woken by a loud alarm that they would definitely not be able to sleep through (low likelihood of missing the alarm). On the other on-call night, par...

Can cultural consumption increase future earnings? Exploring the economic returns to cultural capital.

Cultural consumption is often viewed as a form of embodied cultural capital which can be converted into economic rewards (e.g., earnings) because such practices increase the likelihood of moving into more advantaged social positions. However, quantitative evidence supporting this theory remains uncertain because it is often unable to rule out alternative explanations. Cultural consumption appears to influence hiring decisions in some elite firms, in both the US and the UK, but it is unclear whether these pr...

Enantioselective Michael Reaction of Cyclic β-Ketoesters with Morita-Baylis-Hillman Derivatives Using a Phase-Transfer Catalyst.

This study aims to develop a highly enantioselective Michael reaction of cyclic β-ketoesters with Morita-Baylis-Hillman (MBH) derivatives using a phase-transfer catalyst. Cyclic β-ketoesters reacted with MBH derivatives to stereoselectively generate a quaternary carbon center in the presence of cinchona alkaloid-derived bulky ammonium catalyst and aqueous KOH and Michael adducts bearing an acrylate moiety were obtained in good chemical yields with good enantioselectivity.

Can Women Have Children and a Career? IV Evidence from IVF Treatments.

This paper introduces a new IV strategy based on IVF (in vitro fertilization) induced fertility variation among childless women to estimate the causal effect of having children on their career. For this purpose, we use administrative data on IVF treated women in Denmark. Because observed chances of IVF success do not depend on labor market histories, IVF treatment success provides a plausible instrument for childbearing. Our IV estimates indicate that fertility effects on earnings are: (i) negative, large, ...

No rest for the women: Understanding the impact of on-call work for women in the emergency services.

The unpredictable, "on-call" component of the emergency services (ES) may be difficult to navigate in the context of domestic and work responsibilities, and especially difficult for women, given they tend to take on a greater household burden than do men. Our aim was to understand women's experiences in the ES, particularly the impact of being on-call and related coping strategies.

Psyche Singing: Interview With Michael Eigen.

This interview with Michael Eigen is a conversation about doubt, faith, and three influential men, on getting too excited when reading Freud, having a revelation come in a dream, and accepting mortality. It's about starting to write and breaking things down into smaller pieces, a need to play, the madness in all of us, and the basic rhythm of breaking apart and breaking through, and of letting the psyche sing.

Asymmetric Construction of Remote Vicinal Quaternary and Tertiary Stereocenters via Direct Doubly Vinylogous Michael Addition.

An asymmetric direct doubly vinylogous Michael addition has been developed for the generation of sterically congested vicinal quaternary and tertiary stereocenters. This doubly vinylogous Michael addition of β,γ-unsaturated butenolides to 3-methyl-4-nitro-5-alkenyl isoxazoles, powered by a bifunctional squaramide, affords a broad range of densely functionalized enantioenriched γ,γ-disubstituted butenolides in high yields with excellent diastereo- and enantioselectivities in most cases. Moreover, the str...

A Review of 2016-2017 Agricultural Youth Injuries Involving Skid Steers and a Call for Intervention and Translational Research.

Skid steers or loaders are becoming prolific in U.S. agriculture - as are the injuries and fatalities related to their use. A review of incidents as queried in AgInjuryNews from 2016 to 2017 revealed an overrepresentation of youth being involved in these tragic incidents. This raises concerns over parental attitudes and beliefs about the safety of these machines. Skid steer incidents do not appear to be a result from a lack of safety education materials, however. Indeed, manufacturers, the Centers for Disea...
