Blowing up money? The earnings penalty of smoking in the 1970s and the 21st century.

We analyze the earnings penalty of smoking among Swedish twins in two social contexts: the 1970s, when smoking was common and widely accepted and when there were relatively few tobacco laws aiming to reduce smoking; and the 2000s, when smoking had become more expensive, stigmatizing and less common, and when tobacco laws and regulations had intensified. The results show that the short-term earnings penalty of smoking was much higher in the 21st century than in the 1970s for men. For women, smokers had on av...

Physiology Flies with Time.

The 2017 Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology has been awarded to Jeffrey Hall, Michael Rosbash, and Michael Young for elucidating molecular mechanisms of the circadian clock. From studies beginning in fruit flies, we now know that circadian regulation pervades most biological processes and has strong ties to human health and disease.

Two by two, inch by inch: Height as an indicator of environmental conditions during childhood and its influence on earnings over the life cycle among twins.

Adult height is a function of genetic predispositions and environmental influences during childhood. Hence, any variation in height among monozygotic twins, who share genetic predispositions, is bound to reflect differences in their environmental exposure. Therefore, a height premium in earnings among monozygotic twins also reflects such exposure. In this study, we analyze the height premium over the life cycle among Swedish twins, 10,000 of whom are monozygotic. The premium is relatively constant over the ...

The effects of skin tone, height, and gender on earnings.

Using a theoretical approach grounded in implicit bias and stereotyping theories, this study examines the relationship between observable physical characteristics (skin tone, height, and gender) and earnings, as measured by income. Combining separate streams of research on the influence of these three characteristics, we draw from a sample of 31,356 individual-year observations across 4,340 individuals from the National Longitudinal Study of Youth (NLSY) 1997. We find that skin tone, height, and gender inte...

Probing the mechanism of thermally driven thiol-Michael dynamic covalent chemistry.

The kinetics and mechanism of the thermally activated dynamic covalent exchange of thiol-Michael adducts is investigated. A model system of thiol-Michael adducts between thiophenol and phenylvinylketone derivatives and adducts between 2-mercaptoethanol phenylvinylketone derivatives in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) at elevated temperatures is used to probe the underlying exchange mechanism. The kinetic data show negligible free Michael acceptor, which is consistent with the highly efficient thiol-Michael react...

Theoretical study on the reaction mechanisms of Michael chirality addition between propionaldehyde and nitroalkene catalyzed by an enantioselective catalyst.

The asymmetric Michael addition between propionaldehyde and nitroalkene catalyzed by 8-(ethoxycarbonyl)-1,2,3,3a,8,8a-hexahydropyrrolo[2,3-b]indole-2-carboxylic acid has obtained relatively high yields and excellent enantioselectivities at room temperature. In this study, the molecular structures and optical activity of the most stable conformation I are optimized at B3LYP/6-311++ G(d,p) level. We find that levorotatory conformation I catalyzing the same Michael addition can produce laevo-product A and dext...

N-Heterocyclic Carbene-Catalyzed Michael-Michael-Lactonization Cascade for the Enantioselective Synthesis of Tricyclic δ-Lactones.

Enantioselective synthesis of tricyclic δ-lactones with three contiguous stereocenters has been demonstrated by the N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-catalyzed functionalization of benzylic C(sp)-H bonds. The NHC-catalyzed reaction of enals with dinitrotoluene derivatives under oxidative conditions proceeds via the chiral α,β-unsaturated acylazoliums and produces the δ-lactones in good yields and excellent diastereoselectivity and enantioselectivity. This mild and atom-economic cascade reaction takes place i...

The Economic Foundations of Cohabiting Couples' Union Transitions.

In recent decades, cohabitation has become an increasingly important relationship context for U.S. adults and their children, a union status characterized by high levels of instability. To understand why some cohabiting couples marry but others separate, researchers have drawn on theories emphasizing the benefits of specialization, the persistence of the male breadwinner norm, low income as a source of stress and conflict, and rising economic standards associated with marriage (the marriage bar). Because of...

For richer, for poorer: the relationship between adolescent obesity and future household economic prosperity.

Adolescent obesity not only has serious long-term health implications, but also the potential to lead to a socioeconomic trajectory of lower earnings and household income. However, the magnitude and mechanisms of such outcomes across the life course are poorly understood. Using birth cohort data from the British National Child Development Study (1958 to 2008), we examined the relationship between adolescent obesity (at age 16) and future household income, employment, wages, marriage and spousal earnings whe...

Urology residents on call: Investigating the workload and relevance of calls.

On-call medical services assumed by residents represent many hours of hard work and no studies have documented what it really is. As part of an effort to ameliorate our on-call system, we examined phone calls received by residents on call. Our objectives were to evaluate the characteristics of phone calls received by residents on call (who, when, why, need to go to the hospital) and to determine residents' perception of these calls. We also looked into implementing strategies to reduce unnecessary calls.

Clouds of different colors: A prospective look at head and neck surgical resident call experience.

Graduate medical education programs typically set up call under the assumption that residents will have similar experiences. The terms black cloud and white cloud have frequently been used to describe residents with more difficult (black) or less difficult (white) call experiences. This study followed residents in the department of head and neck surgery during call to determine whether certain residents have a significantly different call experience than the norm. It is a prospective observational study con...

An Investigation of the Probability of Reciprocation in a Risk Reduction Model of Sharing.

A laboratory study investigated whether reductions in the probability of reciprocation would influence sharing in situations of shortfall risk. Choice in twelve adults was evaluated against the predictions of a risk-reduction model of sharing derived from a risk-sensitive foraging theory (the energy-budget rule). Participants responded on a computer task to earn hypothetical money which could be later exchanged for real money. If participants selected the sharing option, their earnings were pooled and split...

C -symmetric sulfonamides as homogeneous and heterogeneous organocatalysts that mimic enzymes in enantioselective Michael additions.

Herein, we report the synthesis of C -symmetric sulfonamides as homogeneous and heterogeneous organocatalysts and their application in the enantioselective conjugate 1,4-Michael addition of carbonylic nucleophiles to β-nitrostyrene. Organocatalysts hydrogen bond to β-nitrostyrene and enamine in the transition state, mimicking an enzyme leading to final products in high yields (up to 98%) and good enantioselectivities (up to 96%). In addition, these results were supported by density functional calculations...

Organocatalytic Transannular Approach to Stereodefined Bicyclo3.1.0hexanes.

A diastereodivergent approach to highly substituted bicyclo[3.1.0]hexanes has been developed through a transannular alkylation reaction that builds up the bicyclic core employing asymmetric organocatalysis as the tool for the installation of all stereocenters. On one hand, a Michael/Michael cascade process between enals and 4-alkenyl sulfamidate imines under the iminium/enamine activation manifold provides a oxathiazole-2,2-dioxide-fused cyclohexane adduct that, after isolation, is subsequently engaged in a...

Uncertain call likelihood negatively affects sleep and next-day cognitive performance while on-call in a laboratory environment.

On-call working arrangements are employed in a number of industries to manage unpredictable events, and often involve tasks that are safety- or time-critical. This study investigated the effects of call likelihood during an overnight on-call shift on self-reported pre-bed anxiety, sleep and next-day cognitive performance. A four-night laboratory-based protocol was employed, with an adaptation, a control and two counterbalanced on-call nights. On one on-call night, participants were instructed that they woul...

Correction to Synthesis of 2-acylindoles via Ag- and Cu-Catalyzed anti-Michael Hydroamination of β-(2-Aminophenyl)-α,β-ynones: Experimental Results and DFT Calculations.

Highly Enantioselective Kinetic Resolution of Michael Adducts through N-Heterocyclic Carbene Catalysis: An Efficient Asymmetric Route to Cyclohexenes.

A highly efficient strategy for the kinetic resolution of Michael adducts was realized using a chiral N-heterocyclic carbene catalyst. The kinetic resolution provides a new convenient route to single diastereomers of cyclohexenes and Michael adducts in good yields with high enantiomeric excesses (up to 99% ee with a selectivity factor of up to 458). This "catch two flies with one stroke" concept allows the synthesis of these two synthetically valuable compound classes at the same time by a single transforma...

Electrochemically Induced Michael Addition Reaction: An Overview.

Due to its high potential for the formation of carbon-carbon bonds, Michael addition reaction is one of the closest reactions to the heart of synthetic organic chemists. Electrochemistry presents a very stimulating and divergent resource for selective oxidation and reduction in organic chemistry, generating activated species, for example radical anions or radical cations. In this review, we try to underscore usefulness of electrogenerated Michael addition reaction with the hope of encouraging synthetic orga...

Reaction profiling of a set of acrylamide-based human tissue transglutaminase inhibitors.

The major function of the enzyme human tissue transglutaminase (TG2) is the crosslinking of proteins via a transamidation between the γ-carboxamide of a glutamine and the ε-amino group of a lysine. Overexpression of TG2 can lead to undesirable outcomes and has been linked to conditions such as fibrosis, celiac disease and neurodegenerative diseases. Accordingly, TG2 is a tempting drug target. The most effective TG2 inhibitors to date are small-molecule peptidomimetics featuring electrophilic warheads that...

Can cultural consumption increase future earnings? Exploring the economic returns to cultural capital.

Cultural consumption is often viewed as a form of embodied cultural capital which can be converted into economic rewards (e.g., earnings) because such practices increase the likelihood of moving into more advantaged social positions. However, quantitative evidence supporting this theory remains uncertain because it is often unable to rule out alternative explanations. Cultural consumption appears to influence hiring decisions in some elite firms, in both the US and the UK, but it is unclear whether these pr...

Can Women Have Children and a Career? IV Evidence from IVF Treatments.

This paper introduces a new IV strategy based on IVF (in vitro fertilization) induced fertility variation among childless women to estimate the causal effect of having children on their career. For this purpose, we use administrative data on IVF treated women in Denmark. Because observed chances of IVF success do not depend on labor market histories, IVF treatment success provides a plausible instrument for childbearing. Our IV estimates indicate that fertility effects on earnings are: (i) negative, large, ...

No rest for the women: Understanding the impact of on-call work for women in the emergency services.

The unpredictable, "on-call" component of the emergency services (ES) may be difficult to navigate in the context of domestic and work responsibilities, and especially difficult for women, given they tend to take on a greater household burden than do men. Our aim was to understand women's experiences in the ES, particularly the impact of being on-call and related coping strategies.
