Tolerance of MRSA ST239-TW to chlorhexidine-based decolonization; evidence for keratinocyte invasion as a mechanism of biocide evasion.

INFORMATION: on genetic determinants of chlorhexidine tolerance (qacA carriage and MIC) in vitro is available, although evidence of the clinical impact and mechanisms remain poorly understood. We investigated why, following chlorhexidine intervention, prevalent epidemic MRSA ST22 and ST36 clones declined at an ICU, whilst an ST239-TW clone did not. The chlorhexidine tolerant ST239-TW phenotypes were assessed for their protein binding, cell adhesion and intracellular uptake potential.

Health in All local Policies: Lessons learned on intersectoral collaboration in a community-based health promotion network in Denmark.

Health promotion increasingly involves collaboration with civil society organisations and the private sector rather than being implemented exclusively by public sector stakeholders. Health in All Policies (HiAP) is an approach that promotes health in policy-making across public sectors. This study explored intersectoral integration and collaboration for health promotion at a local community level through a qualitative single case study of a local community network in Denmark: the Husum Health Network. The p...

Does chlorhexidine mouthwash reduce the rate of oral colonization by gram-negative bacteria in patients with chemotherapy? A placebo-controlled trial.

The presence of gram-negative bacteria in the oral cavity is an undesirable occurrence in patients undergoing chemotherapy. Our aim was to investigate the antibacterial effect of 0.12% chlorhexidine mouthwash in chemotherapy patients with a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. There were no significant differences between oral colonization rates; there may be local factors that interfere with chlorhexidine activity.

Sources of Social Influence on Adolescents' Alcohol Use.

The present research examines social influences on self-reported frequency of drunkenness in a longitudinal sample of 1,439 adolescents (46% female, 90% White, mean age = 14 at baseline) with social network measures from friends, romantic partners, and romantic partners' friends. We build on past research by addressing multiple mechanisms of social influence-peers' frequency of drunkenness, alcohol-related attitudes, and unstructured socializing-across relationship types. Adolescents' drunkenness frequenc...

Exploring the Effect of Sharing Common Facebook Friends on the Sexual Risk Behaviors of Tinder Users.

An increasing number of young adults are using online dating sites and mobile apps. The "common connections" feature on Tinder displays mutual Facebook friends between users and might serve as an unintentional validation of a user's character. This study investigates condom use differences between partners met via mobile dating apps or in-person; and if the "common connections" feature affects the perceived sexual risk Tinder users have toward partners met online. College students who met a partner online o...

Evolutionary insights into Trm112-methyltransferase holoenzymes involved in translation between archaea and eukaryotes.

Protein synthesis is a complex and highly coordinated process requiring many different protein factors as well as various types of nucleic acids. All translation machinery components require multiple maturation events to be functional. These include post-transcriptional and post-translational modification steps and methylations are the most frequent among these events. In eukaryotes, Trm112, a small protein (COG2835) conserved in all three domains of life, interacts and activates four methyltransferases (Bu...

Trust, Money, and Power: Life Cycle Dynamics in Alliances Between Management Partners and Accountable Care Organizations.

Policy Points Accountable care organizations (ACOs) form alliances with management partners to access financial, technical, and managerial support. Alliances between ACOs and management partners are subject to destabilizing tension around decision-making authority, distribution of shared savings, and conflicting goals and values. Management partners may serve either as trainers, ultimately breaking off from the ACO, or as central drivers of the ACO. Management partner participation in ACOs is currently unre...

Could being chlorhexidine an adequate positive control to antimicrobial photodynamic therapy in in vitro studies?

Chlorhexidine digluconate (CHX) is commonly applied as positive control of new antimicrobials, because it is considered the gold-standard for chemical plaque control. In this sense, the aim of this study was to compare the effect of treatments with curcumin-mediated aPDT and CHX in relation to the viability of specific microorganism groups in two distinct times (immediately and 24 h later).

Prevalence of HIV infection, access to HIV care, and response to antiretroviral therapy among partners of HIV-infected individuals in Thailand.
