In a previous study of photodynamic tumor diagnosis using 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA), the authors proposed using fluorescence intensity and bright spot analyses under confocal microscopy for the precise discrimination of tumorous brain tissue (such as glioblastoma, GBM) from normal tissue. However, it remains unclear if bright spot analysis can discriminate infiltrating tumor in the boundary zone and whether this method is suitable for GBM with no 5-ALA fluorescence or for other tumor types.
Those persons with church membership or professing a faith or relationship with God represent a microcosm of society. Therefore, the demons of racism, bigotry, and prejudice found in society at large are found in the church. Despite the very nature of Christianity that calls on Christians to be a countervoice in the world against evil, many have capitulated to various strains of racism in the world and in the Church. Some Christian denominations have begun to explore racism in the church and have developed ...
In scanned proton beam therapy systematic deviations in spot size at iso-center can occur as a result of changes in the beam-line optics. There is currently no general guideline of the spot size accuracy required clinically. In this work we quantify treatment plan robustness to systematic spot size variations as a function of spot size and spot spacing, and we suggest guidelines for tolerance levels for spot size variations.
Inadequate resources have led to family medicine research divisions at varying stages of development. The purpose of this analysis was to identify the factors that family medicine research "bright spot" departments perceive to be crucial to their success.
The updated National HIV/AIDS Strategy recommends widespread HIV education and testing and calls the faith community to assist in these efforts. Yet, limited information exist on church-based HIV testing interventions. This study examined feasibility and assessed HIV testing outcomes of Taking It to the Pews (TIPS), a multilevel HIV education and testing intervention. Four African American churches were matched and randomized to TIPS or a standard-information control arm. Intervention churches delivered the...
Blue laser imaging (BLI)-bright (BLI-bright) has shown promise as a more useful tool for detection of early gastric cancer (EGC) than white-light imaging (WLI). However, the diagnostic performance of BLI-bright in the detection of EGC has not been investigated. We aimed to compare real-time detection rates of WLI with that of BLI-bright for EGC.
Primary mediastinal dedifferentiated liposarcoma is an extremely rare malignant mesenchymal neoplasm composed of lipogenic tissue. It can be huge enough to compress heart and surrounding organs leading to clinical symptoms.
Hypertension (HTN) continues to be one of the most preventable diseases that have global impact. The prevalence of HTN in African-Americans is considered to be among the highest in the world. This investigation sought to determine whether a church-based self-management program would aid African-American adults (18 years of age and above) in reducing their blood pressure (BP). The theoretical foundation was the Health Belief Model. The clinical question was: Will a church-based American Heart Association (AH...
Parents are important decision makers in black churches. The objective of this qualitative study was to identify African American parents' beliefs of the Black Church's role in preventing teen pregnancy and promoting healthy teen relationships.
To compare large spot versus standard spot laser for treatment of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP).
Faith-based health promotion programs have been effective in increasing healthy eating (HE) and physical activity (PA). Very few reports exist regarding church leaders' anticipated and experienced barriers and facilitators to program implementation. Pastors (n = 38, 70%) and program coordinators (n = 54, 100%) from churches (N = 54) who attended a program training answered open-ended questions about anticipated barriers and facilitators to implementing the HE and PA parts of the Faith, Activity, and Nutriti...
The strong coupling of a dense layer of molecular excitons with surface-plasmon modes in a metal gives rise to polaritons (hybrid light-matter states) called plexcitons. Surface plasmons cannot directly emit into (or be excited by) free-space photons due to the fact that energy and momentum conservation cannot be simultaneously satisfied in photoluminescence. Most plexcitons are also formally non-emissive, even though they can radiate via molecules upon localization due to disorder and decoherence. However,...
Abdominal intercostal hernia repair for huge incisional hernia after thoracoabdominal surgery involves a complex anatomical structure. Hence, it is difficult to apply the laparoscopic approach to large hernias in the lateral upper abdomen. Further the optimal approach to mesh exposure without infection after incisional hernia repair is still controversial. Herein, we describe our experience of repairing a huge abdominal intercostal hernia by mesh trimming and suture reconstruction for wound dehiscence.
We describe a multilevel intervention to enhance adoption of point-of-care HIV and diabetes testing at church health fairs in Atlanta, Georgia. Church leaders viewed a leadership video and subsequently conducted social activities that support testing. After the multilevel intervention, a third of churches hosted HIV and diabetes health fairs, and church leaders engaged in more social activities. Of 193 attendees receiving health services, 56.6% received HIV testing and 92.7% received diabetes testing. This ...
To compare two different laser strategies of panretinal photocoagulation for diabetic retinopathy.
The aim of this research was to determine the correction coefficients of different spot urinary iodine concentrations (UICs) in a day to predict the early morning UIC, to make the different spot UICs of a day comparable in assessing iodine status in the same population.
Spot blotch is a severe biotic menace of wheat caused by Cochliobolus sativus (syn. Bipolaris sorokiniana). Spot blotch is liable to major yield losses in warm humid regions. A genome-wide association study using genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS) markers was conducted to identify genomic regions associated with spot blotch resistance in a diversity panel of 159 spring wheat genotypes. In total, 87,096 GBS markers covering the whole genome, with an average polymorphism information content value of 0.276, were a...
Men's relatively low rates of HIV testing has been termed the 'HIV blind spot' and recently declared by UNAIDS as a top priority. This study uses data from five nationally representative Demographic and Health Surveys in Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, and Zimbabwe to explore factors associated with men's lifetime HIV testing. Between 29.3% and 34.9% of men ages 15-49 in these countries had never tested for HIV and men who held accepting attitudes towards gender-based violence, who lacked HIV knowledge, ...
Several formulas using spot urine have been developed to estimate 24-hour sodium excretion, but none of them have been validated in pediatrics. We aimed to evaluate the performance of eight formulas, including Kawasaki, Tanaka, International Cooperative Study on Salt, Other Factors, and Blood Pressure (INTERSALT1), INTERSALT without potassium (INTERSALT2), Mage, Whitton, Uechi simple-mean, and Uechi regression, in estimating 24-hour sodium excretion at both population and individual levels in Chinese young ...
The aim of this data is comparison of achieved data from salt iodine measurement by titration method with using sodium thiosulfate in presence of lugol׳s reagent and commercial spot- kit. Titration measurement was carried out in two different laboratories using standard samples. 437 samples including 20 commercial brands were collected throughout Iran. The iodine contents of the samples were measured by both the titration method and two most frequently used spot-kit brands in Iran. There is no significant ...
The gold standard to assess salt intake is 24-h urine collections. Use of a urine spot sample can be a simpler alternative, especially when the goal is to assess sodium intake at the population level. Several equations to estimate 24-h urinary sodium excretion from urine spot samples have been tested in adults, but not in children.
Randomized controlled clinical trials require management effort, involving huge organizational, economic and informatics investments. Information technology offers opportunities to approach clinical trial methodology in new ways. However, there are only a few reports of computerized data and drug management systems.
Polling data reveal a decades-long residual rejection of evolution in the United States, based on perceived religious conflict. Similarly, a strong creationist movement has been documented internationally, including in the Muslim world. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS, Mormon), a generally conservative denomination, have historically harbored strong anti-evolution sentiments. We report here a significant shift toward acceptance, compared to attitudes 30 years earlier, by stud...
The current study considers reasons for the consistent focus of academic research and mainstream media on clerical child sexual abuse (cCSA) largely within the Roman Catholic Church, seeming to ignore cCSA in other Christian denominations and religions. This study includes an analysis of traditional mainstream media and case reports on cCSA in non-Catholic churches and other religious faiths. The authors highlight the inadequacy of research and identify a wide range of gaps in this so far neglected area. Co...
To investigate the role of individual's taste sensitivity using 6-n-propylthiouracil (PROP) in the development of white spot lesions (WSLs) in adolescent orthodontic patients.
